Product Details

With its incredible f/1.2 maximum aperture, the super fast EF 50mm f/1.2L USM is a consummate low-light performer. A lens that allows fine creative control over focusing and depth of field.

  • EF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/1.2 to f/16
  • One Aspherical Element
  • Super Spectra Coating
  • Ring-Type Ultrasonic Motor AF System
  • Weather-Sealed Construction
  • Rounded 8-Blade Diaphragm

Very fast maximum aperture

A large maximum aperture of f/1.2 gives outstanding speed when shooting in low light. The lens also provides fine control over focusing, allowing extremely shallow depth of field for creative effects.

Smooth background blur

A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.

L-series quality

The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.

Ultrasonic focusing

A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.

Super Spectra coating

Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.

Integration with E-TTL II flash metering

The lens passes distance information back to a compatible EOS camera's E-TTL II flash system to ensure optimal flash metering.

The Canon EF 50 mm f/1.2L USM is a new, expensive lens which belongs to the high-end L series. In the case of such devices I should have had problems with finding anything which could be put into the cons section.

ePHOTOzine

This lens isn't for everyone, that's for sure. It's a unique lens in more ways than one. The bright maximum aperture allows depth of field to be reduced creatively, isolating your subjects from the background, which this lens renders incredibly smoothly.

Canon’s fastest, highest quality, professional grade 50mm prime lens.Roughly two-and-a-half years ago Canon replaced the legendary EF 50mm f/1.0L USM with the EF 50mm f/1.2L USM. While its predecessor was the fastest (and one of the most expensive) mass-production lens ever made, by sacrificing two...

Camera Labs

Canon's EF 50mm f1.2L USM is a prime lens with a standard focal length of 50mm and the joint-fastest focal ratio in the Canon lens catalogue - a position shared with the EF 85mm f1.2L USM.

SLR Lens and Camera Reviews

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM is a very promising lens - it's one of the fastest prime lenses available for Canon's EF mount and is clearly targeted at photographers who require that extra f-stop and are willing to pay premium for it. However, the lens did not quite live to all my expectations.

EF 50mm f/1.2L USM The superbly built EF 50mm f/1.2L lens provided modestly sharper images with better out of focus blurring (bokeh) at f/1.4 and f/2 and was much more resistant to flare and internal reflections than the EF 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Photodo

This unique standard lens from Canon costs around £1235 currently and has a super-bright f/1.2 maximum aperture, silent ultrasonic focusing and professional-grade weather sealed construction.

The Digital Picture

For many years, a fixed focal length (prime) 50mm lens was standard for film SLRs. Although 50mm lenses are not nearly as popular as they used to be, there are still many people who want one of these in their kit.

Since I purchased this lens its not been off my camera, its quality is obvious from the moment you take it out of the box, and the images that I have so far captured are pin sharp and superbly detailed, the combination of this lens and my 5D Mk4 is perfect.

Wex Photo Video

A wonderful lens that lets me be creative. I found the 1.2 aperture could be hit or miss as DOF is so thin but I get reliable results every time by focussing using Live View on my Canon 5D 4.

I am not aware of any reason why this lens should not give a very high performance. It is required for use with my Canon Eos R6. As I have only recently obtained this camera it is much too early for me to give any opinion.

LensTip.com

Nice objective for feeling photography, but unfortunately not as perfect optical performance as I expected at this price level. If you know that you want it, buy it, but if you have to ask, consider some cheaper alternatives.

In the past, I owned the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II and the more recent f/1.8 STM. Then I got the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM, which performed well. However, the main reason why I bought the EF 50mm f/1.2L USM was because this lens has a lot of character and drawing to it, which isn't present with other 50mm lenses.

With paper thin DOF wide open, it takes some time and effort to get to know how to use this lens to it's full potential. However, I have to say it's worthi the effort. Get it right and the results are stunning.

Since I purchased it, the 50L has become my 'go to' lens. It's always on one of my camera bodies. I was surprised at the responsiveness and accuracy of the AF, having read so many negative reviews. The 50L is a big leap up from my 50 f1.4, which I keep but use much less.
