A 50mm is the stable of the majority of camera bags. On full frame cameras, it's focal length is about the same as the human eye. On Canon APS-C cameras, its a bit more. But in both cases, it is the perfect portrait lens to have. What's more, this third generation EF lens, now has an STM motor ideal for videographers who want a fast aperture suited to studio, interview, night-time movie making.
An affordable, high quality lens that’s perfect for creative portraits and low-light photos. Blur backgrounds to make your subject stand out, and enjoy smooth near-silent STM focusing when shooting movies.

A fantastic lens for portraits
The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM blurs the background behind your subject so they really stand out. It will also let you fill the frame without getting uncomfortably close, making it easier to get a natural expression on their face.
When used on a full-frame EOS camera the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM acts as a standard lens, giving a perspective, similar to that of the human eye – ideal for high-quality everyday photography.
Fast, virtually silent focusing
Near-silent STM technology focuses extremely quickly when shooting still photos, so you can react suddenly to capture fleeting moments. When capturing video focusing is smoother and slower, for footage that has a professional cinematic look to it.
A great performer in low-light conditions
The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lets in lots of light, so you can keep shooting even when conditions begin to get dark. Capture the mood of the moment using atmospheric available light – you’ll love the results!
Super-sharp image quality
This fixed, non-zooming lens delivers superb images, whether you’re shooting photos or movies. Sharpness is enhanced, contrast is boosted and distortion is reduced for a more natural result.
The glass elements used in the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM are layered with Canon’s bespoke Super Spectra coating, which prevents flare and ghosting when shooting into the light.
Compact ‘go-everywhere’ design
The diminutive EF 50mm f/1.8 STM weighs just 160g and is only 40mm long, so you’ll always have room for it in your bag. A tactile manual focus ring is easy to find and use without taking the camera away from your eye.
Canon's old 'Nifty Fifty' was a popular lens despite its poor build quality as it represented such good value for money. Even though this lens costs more than its predecessor, it still represents great value due to the high levels of sharpness it produces.
Michael Topham finds out if Canon's new EF 50mm f/1.8 STM prime lens is a bargain for £129
When compared to its predecessor the new Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 STM features several crucial assets. They are especially visible when it comes to the build quality and the casing. With the newer model you get a metal mount, a bit more compact body and a manual focus ring which is actually useful.
The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is an appealingly simple, compact and capable lens that's equally at home on an APS-C or full-frame DSLR camera. It's also very cheap, making it a worthy addition to any EOS user's camera bag.
Design- and price-wise, the EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM lens is targeted mainly at snapshooters and photo enthusiasts who use one of Canon’s cropped-sensor (APS-C) cameras. However, it is also worthy of consideration by owners to the flagship APS-C models like the EOS 7D Mark II for its features,...
The Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM is an affordable, compact macro lens with stabilization and a built-in light. It shows some barrel distortion, but is otherwise an excellent performer.
Canon's EF 50mm f1.8 STM finally upgrades the 24 year old EF 50mm f1.8 II with smoother focusing, more rounded aperture blades, closer focusing and a tougher lens mount. Like its predecessor, it'll gather over eight times more light than a typical kit zoom, making it great in low-light, deliver a...
It is not hard to find room in the bag for the addition of the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM Lens and especially with the built-in macro ring light and image stabilization, the 35 macro has a very high convenience-to-use factor.
This lens is an update to the popular and inexpensive standard 50mm f/1.8 EF lens , replacing the standard focusing motor with Canon's new stepping motor technology, which promises smoother, quieter autofocus performance, which is especially suited to recording video.
Good lens performance and great bokeh with ultra wide aperture. If there's one thing slightly wrong it is that it looks cheap ... but it definitely does the job, full frame at 50mm, but acts as an 80mm on a crop frame DSLR.
So light and compact, took me a day or so to adjust from kit lens. Beautiful sharp photos even on cloudy gloomy days. So happy ☺️
Perfect for indoor night shots with no flash and as cheap as you can get. Very happy with this lens.
Bought this lens recently after watching some reviews online. I am just learning DSLR photography but I have found this lens really easy to set up and use. I have had some great results over the first few days and look forward to using it more.
An awesome fast lens, a must for any photographers kit, light weight and simple to use, wide apeture and good in low light
One of the cheapest lenses to upgrade to after purchasing a camera and kit lens. The autofocus is great and the wide aperture makes it perfect for shallow depth of field shots of products or portraits. It's small so no room of image stabilisation which can take some getting used to.
Great lens for the price. Paired with a crop sensor camera it makes a useful portrait lens, equivalent to 80mm, which is what I bought it for. At f1.8 it gives a nice blurry background but there is a little lack of sharpness, but this can sometimes improve portraits.
Ideal for portraits and moviemakers
