Fast F1.8 for broad creative control

Renowned ZEISS contrast and resolution bring out the best in full-frame image sensors such as those in the Sony α7 series, and a large F1.8 maximum aperture can produce beautiful full-frame background bokeh. You can also stop down for extended depth-of-field. A bright lens like this is also an advantage when shooting in low light.

Smooth bokeh enhances depth and dimension

A 9-blade circular aperture works with this lens’s state-of-the-art optics to create beautifully smooth bokeh in out-of-focus background areas when desired, with natural-looking highlights that won’t distract from the important foreground subject and details.

Sony and ZEISS team up for better images

Advanced technology from ZEISS and Sony combines in a precision optical design with three aspherical elements, two double-sided, that effectively reduce all forms of aberration while achieving outstanding image-wide sharpness and contrast. The ZEISS T* coating suppresses internal reflections, for sublime contrast from highlights to deep blacks.

Shoot with confidence anywhere

Some of the most exciting images are captured in challenging environments. A dust and moisture resistant design means that the lens will continue to perform reliably in moderately wet or dusty conditions, so you can shoot with confidence wherever those great shots are found.

Outstanding colour and contrast

The ZEISS T* coating is an important contributing factor, effectively suppressing spurious reflections that can degrade overall image quality. Flare and ghosting are reduced for enhanced colour and contrast that give images a deep, three-dimensional feel.

Lightweight, Sharp image, Durable, Image quality, Sharpness

Compared to all full frame standard f/1.7-1.8 lenses, tested by us so far, the Sonnar 1.8/55 FE has one undeniable advantage: sharp images in the frame centre already from the maximum relative aperture.

This is a lens that I just could not figure out the hype for. I've seen so many pleasing images come from this lens, that is true. The bokeh is pleasing and it has a bit of that warm contax/zeiss magic.

Camera Labs

The Sony FE 55mm f1.8 ZA from 2013 is a very successful standard lens: small, light, sharp across a 42MP full-frame sensor, with excellent resistance against flare and glare in adverse contra-light situations It may only offer an f1.8 focal ratio but its slightly longer 55mm focal length compensates...

The Digital Picture

The Sony FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA is a high-performing lens that merges light weight, compact size and quality build with excellent image quality and AF performance. While not the cheapest option available, this easy to take with you lens performs excellently.

PC Magazine

The Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8 ZA captures sharp, lovely images, but it's not a budget lens.

The Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA is certainly capable of delivering stunning results ... if you are aware of a few limitations. The image center is sharp at f/1.8 but the outer image region isn't quite as impressive here.

Mirror Lessons

The Sony FE 55mm f/1.8 is the lens I’ve used the most with the A7 series yet I’d never published a dedicated article about it. As such, I thought it was about time I gave it some attention, especially since this lens is considered by many to be one of the best autofocus prime lenses ever designed.

Imaging Resource

The new Sony FE 55mm ƒ/1.8 ZA Zeiss Sonnar T* lens is a fantastic fast prime lens for the Sony A7R and A7 full-frame mirrorless E-mount cameras and gives shooters a "normal" focal length perspective that's great for portraits and street photography as well as low-light shooting.

I bought this lens with my A7RIV about a year ago along with 3 Sony GM lens. The body and other lenses are all great but this lens is outstanding. It stays on my camera 90% of the time. It's sharp, it's fast and it's tiny. I might upgrade my other gear but this will be with me forever.

I bought this about a month ago as a lens for aerial photography. After some ground tests I flew with it last week on my A7Riii. These make a small and easily handled camera system in a cockpit and the results surpassed my expectations - very sharp and with good colour rendition.

This lens justifies the price. Mates perfectly with a7c to maintain a compact but very powerful combo. The evf on the camera had me wondering a bit about how the photos would translate, but once uploaded, I'm blown away by the sharpness and bokeh.

Bought it a few days ago and am happy with sharpness and colour rendition. Not impressed with size of hood as it feels too big.Adding a polariser is tricky as not much finger space to screw it in and out easily. So I bought a 5mm extender ring and this has sorted the issue. But outcome wise- great...

This lenses reputation has long made it highly regarded, and for a good reason. Few lenses attain this level of sharpness and contrast let alone accurate reliable focusing. The build quality is top flight as well. It is an ideal low weight on a A7RII type body as well. Suitable for so many purposes.

There are some fabulous Sony lenses - and the the Sony 55mm and 35mm prime lenses are two of the best in terms of outright sharpness. Make no doubt about it, when coupled with the auto focus on the Sony A7 series cameras, this 55mm makes bitingly sharp images with strong contrast.

Wilkinson Cameras

Excellent lens for the Sony FF system. Amazingly sharp across the frame, and fast AF. Quite expensive compared to other ‘nifty-fifty’ f1.8 lenses, but I guess that’s the price you pay for Zeiss quality.

Clifton Cameras

I am a long time Fuji user but because I wanted the best BIF and sports action camera I opted for an A9. Apart from the 200-600 for my main use I needed to get an all round street/general photography lens to justify this system along side my Fuji. I have been stunned by the quality of my 55mm.

Wex Photo Video

Quite simply one of the best lenses for it's size that has ever been made. You will never regret buying one. It is always a pleasure to have on the camera.

Excellent lens that does exactly what I want it to do and it delivers results in spades. I'm not a technical reviewer, so can't and won't comment on it from that perspective, but as a jobbing photographer it certainly met my requirements giving detailed, sharp and contrasty images - it is unfortunate though that the camera for which it is primarily intended does not do it justice.

This is an excellent lens, solid construction, it focuses well and it is very sharp. I was a little dubious about the price for what is a standard lens but the quality of the images are first class. This lens on the Sony A7r more than rival my Nikon D4 with the 135mm f2 DC Nikkor lens which i have been using professionally for the last couple of years. Most impressed!
