Situated as a versatile camera with capable photo and video traits, the Canon EOS 90D is a sleek DSLR also characterized by its high-resolution 32.5MP APS-C CMOS sensor. This updated sensor design achieves enhanced image clarity, resolution, and dynamic range, along with adept sensitivity and low noise to suit working in a variety of situations. Combined with advanced image processing, this sensor is also capable of outputting UHD 4K30p and Full HD 120p video, as well as supporting continuous stills shooting rates up to 10 fps. When working with the optical viewfinder, an apt 45-point all cross-type AF system affords fast performance in a range of lighting conditions for tracking moving subjects and working in low light, while the 5481-point Dual Pixel CMOS AF system benefits live-view shooting and movie recording by providing a smooth, natural focusing quality akin to the way a camcorder acquires focus.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the 90D sports a vari-angle touchscreen LCD for intuitive control and compositional freedom, and an optical pentaprism viewfinder provides a bright, clear, and realistic viewing means characteristic of the DSLR shooting experience. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity allow you to pair mobile devices with the camera to wirelessly transfer files for sharing your photos and movies online.

32.5MP APS-C CMOS Sensor

Featuring an impressively high-resolution 32.5MP APS-C CMOS sensor, the 90D is capable of producing imagery with notable clarity and dynamic range, as well as a broad sensitivity range and low noise to support working in difficult lighting situations. The sensor and image processor also realize fast performance throughout the camera system, including the ability to shoot continuously at up to 10 fps, record UHD 4K30p video, or record high-speed Full HD 1080p video at 120 fps.

45-Point All Cross-Type AF and Dual Pixel CMOS AF Systems

Benefitting stills shooting with the optical viewfinder, a wide-area 45-point all cross-type phase-detection autofocus system provides quick and precise focusing in difficult lighting conditions down to -3 EV. For working with telephoto lenses fitted with extenders, 27 of the points are capable of focusing down to f/8 and the centre dual cross-type offers increased precision at brighter aperture values. The cross-type design of the sensors affords greater accuracy in low-contrast and mixed lighting conditions, and the broad coverage of the 45 sensors is ideal for tracking and maintaining focus on moving subjects.

Making use of the 45-points is a series of four AF area selection modes, including single-point AF; Zone AF, where you can select from one of nine AF zones; Large Zone AF, which offers a choice of three selectable zones; and 45-point AF auto selection, which allows the camera to select a single point automatically.

When recording video or shooting in live view, a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system is employed that features 5481 selectable autofocus points. This focusing system offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. Dual Pixel CMOS AF integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement.

When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.

Intuitive DSLR design

An intelligent optical viewfinder delivers a clear bright view that’s comfortable to use for long periods. The EOS 90D feels balanced even with long telephoto lenses.

An intelligent performance

A 220,000 pixel RGB+IR metering sensor works with the camera’s iTR focusing system for superb subject tracking – following faces and other objects around the frame.

Superb creative video

Shoot stunning 4K video, using Dual Pixel CMOS AF to keep things sharp and cinematic. Capture great audio and use frame rates up to 120fps for slow motion filming.

Product Reviews

Long battery life, Optical viewfinder, Vari-angle lcd, Easy to use, Design

Well built, reasonably fluid in use and festooned with plentiful control options, both in terms of physical buttons and its touch screen menus, the Canon EOS 90D is the very definition of a ‘comprehensive’ camera.

Trusted Reviews

Externally, the 90D is pretty similar to its predecessor, the 80D. Placing the two side by side, it’ll be hard to spot too big of a difference, as it’s internally where you find most of the big changes.

If you still prefer DSLRs to mirrorless cameras, there's a lot to like about the Canon EOS 90D – it's a feature-packed DSLR with a high-resolution sensor and speedy, smooth performance.

The new standard bearer for the traditional DSLR – performance, usability and great image quality in one reasonably priced package

Amateur Photographer

It has been a while since a review of a DSLR has been published on the AP website. So far this year 90% of the cameras we’ve reviewed have been mirrorless, so for Canon to come out and release a new APS-C DSLR at the same time as they continue to evolve their mirrorless systems is intriguing.

Pocket Lint

At a glance Canon's latest enthusiast DSLR doesn't appear that different to the outgoing 80D. But with a large bump in resolution and burst shooting it's an altogether different beast.

If you're looking for a Digital SLR, then the Canon EOS 90D gives a range of compelling features, that make it a great choice. As a DSLR, rather than a mirrorless camera, it also offers exceptional battery life, with 1300 shots possible before the battery is depleted.

The body of the 90D is surprisingly light, making it easier to carry and use for extended shoots. This reduced weight, will likely mean you’ll take it with you to more places. In terms of design, it’s a very familiar layout if you’ve ever used any Canon before.Previous experience in cameras matters...

The EOS 90D is ideal for photo enthusiasts who prefer the look and feel of a DSLR body and would rather use an optical viewfinder than an EVF.

DP Review

The EOS 90D is a DSLR that functions most reliably when used in live view, thanks to its excellent Dual Pixel AF system. Through-the-finder AF is less reliable, by comparison. The camera also offers excellent Raw image quality and usable full-width 4K in a well-built, weather-sealed package with...

Excellent for the enthusiastic amateur. Lots of built in auto features to help you take the best pics whilst providing you with the help and knowledge to improve your skills. If, like me, you don't want to get too wrapped up in tbe tech side of photography and just want to get on with taking great...

As an intermediate level photographer I wish this had been my first camera. The ease of controls that are all in just the right place for my small hands to find are really useful. I thought a "joystick/toggle" switch would be a useless addition and the WiFi phone controls (I'm old school SLR) would...

Pros: •This camera is very well built. •Not easily breakable. •Flip screen 360 degrees for content creators. I love it. Cons: •Noisy •Heavy •Picture quality in my opinion is better than 18 megapixel camera , but not by much. Noise is still present in every shot.

Still getting used to the new camera, but after the first couple of uses seems to be a big improvement (as you'd expect) on my EOS 600D. Fast, responsive, a wider range of auto-focus points and set ups and a much faster continuous shooting speed.

Castle Cameras

So much to learn! getting to grips with it. I have only operated it in Automatic mode, but the results have been good. The speed of the auto-focus is phenomenal compared with my old way of manually focusing and the results are sharp (as one would expect).

Firstly I am reviewing this as very much an amateur photographer who enjoys using his own photographs as an aid to drawing and painting. This camera is a 40th wedding anniversary present and is an up grade from a 70D which I still retain but now I keep a 100-400 lens on the 90 and use the 70 to...

Bought this canon 90d upgraded from a canon 7d mkii. It's lighter and I like the tilt touchscreen as I'm doing more landscape and different angle shots. WiFi and Bluetooth is a good feature. Frames per second is on par with the 7dmkii but not the AF .

My previous Canon 50D wore out after over a decade, and this 90D makes a great replacement. You can charge the battery, put in a memory card, set it to auto and take great photos, and then you can have hours of fun playing with the settings - I've been a keen amateur photographer for 30 years, and...

I upgraded from my Canon 60D to this camera. Could not believe the changes made which make using the camera a real pleasure the autofocus is quicker and more accurate.
