How does the shortest and lightest 70-200mm f/2.8 lens for full frame cameras perform? Michael Topham paired it with the Canon EOS R to find out

PhotoReview

The 70-200mm zoom range is a popular extension to 24-70mm zooms and works well for sports and wildlife shooting at longer focal lengths and portraiture at focal lengths between 70mm and about 105mm, where it provides a natural-looking perspective.

PC Magazine

The Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM is the smallest telezoom of its type, but it's priced at a premium.

Camera Labs

The Canon RF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM is a pro zoom that exploits the benefits of both mirrorless and modern optical design to deliver a truly unique proposition. It essentially matches the optical quality of the superb EF 70-200mm f2.8 Mark III, but with a barrel that’s two thirds the weight and, when...

The Digital Picture

Practically expected by now is that each new RF lens is a game-changer and the Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Lens is that. Canon first shared a preproduction mockup of the Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Lens at a media event where we were all drooling over the possibility of this lens model being...

The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM showcases (almost) everything that's best about the RF system...

This lens is fast to focus, incredibly sharp, and the compression is excellent... similar to my 85mm 1.2. The weight of the lens can get quite heavy, but that is to be expected given it's size. A staple for every professional photographer!- Kathryn Faye Photographyhttps://kathrynfayephotography.com/

It's easy to see why this lens is so popular or so high on people’s wish list. The build quality alone should ensure that whatever treatment is dished out to it, it will last a lifetime.

DP Review

The Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM is quite simply an excellent lens, which will reward users with quality images in almost every situation. On full-frame 35mm, sharpness is very good even wide open, becoming excellent corner-to-corner when stopped down.

SLR Lens and Camera Reviews

Performance of the lens is disappointing - for ~US$1,500 we expect a lens that performs consistently well and that's where Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM fails. The lens shows very good performance in the shorter zoom range (70-135mm), but falls short towards the longer end.

Canon

Compact, excellent image quality, I no longer use a 70 - 300mm zoom, as a cropped image from this lens more than meets the need at the longer end. Just about small enough to fit in the rucksack along with other gear, although my preference is to remove the tripod bracket first.

Upgraded from the MKI EF version of this lens and WOW - what a difference! So much smaller, lighter, and most importantly a massive improvement in image quality and sharpness. Recommended.

What a super lens this is, I owned the EF version 70-200 F2.8 mkii which is a great lens but the RF version is sharper smaller lighter, I am so pleased with the decision I made to move over to the Eos r and the RF lenses a must for the future.

Wex Photo Video

I traded in my loved and trusted EF version of this lens. The thought of a smaller compact version appealed to me, for travel etc. So responsive with Canon R5. Great purchase.

WEX

Great image quality and well made. Heavy but acceptable considering the specification - would I have forgone the F2.8 for the F4 had it been available - only time will tell. But I suspect I will treasure this lens for many years The combination of lens IS plus R5 IBIS makes this a joy to use.

I recently acquired this lens to go with a recent Eos R purchase, It was a straight transfer from my 5D Mk III and 70-200 IS II, used for equine sports. At this time of year the action is often indoors, in poorly lit arenas, so any features which allow sharpness and detail in these conditions are a...

Wex Photo Video

Great for portrait, events, indoor sports, can be used for wildlife if you're at a reasonable distance, sharp, Like the fact its compact fits in my backpack upright, I don't mind the fact it as an extending zoom.
