The Fujifilm XF 18mm F2 R is one of the oldest lenses in the XF line-up, and optically one of the worst-performing, with significant distortion and chromatic aberrations, plus a lack of center and particularly edge sharpness when shooting wide-open at the faster apertures.

Boasting a compact design, this lightweight and versatile 18mm XF F2 lens (135 equivalent: 27mm) produces enhanced image resolution right to the image edge.
Featuring an all-glass aspherical lens and other elements, the lens is polished to perfection and treated with Super EBC coating while the high-quality metal barrel and precision-machined 1/3-step aperture ring gives versatile control.
Excellent out-of-focus bokeh are achieved thanks to the design of the moulded aperture diaphragm blades. The blades are curved to create a circular image at all aperture settings, while the very edges of each blade are meticulously rounded off rather than simply cut off, which delivers a sharper image.
Specifically designed to maximise the mirror less design of the X-Pro1 body, the X-Mount has a short flange back distance of just 17.7mm giving high resolution right across the image.
”Pancake” lenses are always a compromise between the image quality (especially on the edge of the frame) and their size. Small wonder the number of faults of such constructions is usually high and they are very similar for different lenses of that kind.
Many photographers will love the straightforward, traditional design, which makes changing the aperture setting very direct. The build quality is what you might expect from a prime lens with a £550 price tag, even considering the very low weight.
The compact size and moderately wide field of view make this lens well-suited to everyday shooting. It is also small, light and inconspicuous enough to be ideal for street photography and produces a natural-looking perspective that suits some types of landscape and cityscape shooting.
The Fujifilm Fujinon XF 18mm F2 R is showing its age, but is still a good choice for X shooters who prefer lightweight lenses.
There's not much more to say that the test results don't already show: very good performance, even when used wide open, and excellent performance when stopped down just a little. If you're an X-Pro 1 user, this is another lens that definitely deserves a place in your bag.
Fujifilm XF 18mm f/2.0 R This lens is one of three introduced with Fujifilm's X-Pro1 interchangeable lens digital camera. It offers an angle of view equivalent to a 27mm lens on a 35mm camera, a bright maximum aperture of f/2 and costs around £550.
Great lens, a very usable wide-angle field of view and capable for close-up work. I've no issues with build quality or optical properties. Some criticise "soft corner sharpness", but this is subjective and I prefer to have a natural lens generated vignette.
The rendering is brilliant, it produces great results, some of my best photos are with the 18. Although its sometimes not the sharpest in some situations the rendering more than makes up for this, one of the best rendering lenses out there
Superb fast prime lens, extremely well built, Image quality is superb, I have used this lens for Landscapes and general photography. Traditionally built with F stops which I have missed so much since going digital it is a pleasure to be setting the F stops and shutter speeds manually, makes you put...
I purchased this 'used' several years ago and it is probably my favourite focal length. This lens gets some poor reviews on the Internet as being softer in the corners etc., however when used as a documentary lens it is fantastic and I love it.
Great performance for a fast wide angle lens. F2 is totally usable, very sharp in the centre a bit softer at the edges but still very good. Most apertures follow this pattern but then most fast wide angle lenses are softer on the edges and corners.
Equivalent to a 27mm on a full frame camera this little lense is fast focusing sharp and my first choice wide-angle when shooting environmental portraits for my PR Corporate and Press and concert Work.
The lens is sharp enough in the centre, but I find the XF 18-55mm produces better results across the frame at the 18mm setting. I would swap the slightly faster aperture for the better image quality of the 18-55mm.
I've had this this lens for some time now and find it very useful when you are in cramp spaces and with a aperture of f2 you can do landscapes to working with in a room also
