Overall this is a very impressive and inexpensive lens that should bring true macro photography within the grasp of most DX-format camera users. There are a few minor weaknesses, the most obvious of which is relatively sluggish focusing in AF mode, but there is nothing serious to dislike about this...

Get closer than you could imagine
Macro photography promises fun, unique ways of capturing the things that amaze you most, whether it's the petal of a flower, the eye of an insect or the tiny toes of a new-born baby. The AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G provides high resolution and contrast from infinity to life-size (1X) so that you can focus extra close on your subjects, allowing you to get lost in the tiny details of life.
Sharp images from infinity to life-size (1X)
This standard close-up lens captures the finest details at any distance, including details practically impossible to detect with the human eye (at 1X magnification). It's a great choice for enticing food photography or detailed product shots. And with its continuous autofocusing from infinity to 6.4 inches (life-size/1X), the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G ensures sharpness and clarity in every composition.
Natural Background Blur (Bokeh)
Whether you're shooting portraits, food or nature—indoors or outdoors—the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G's rounded 7-blade diaphragm renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings. Selective focus helps to isolate the subject, creating out of focus backgrounds.
Stunning portraits and landscapes, too!
The AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is compact, lightweight and versatile enough for everyday photography, including flattering people shots and breath-taking landscapes, so you get brilliant results in most situations without switching lenses.
Marvel at the details you can capture
The AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is excellent at capturing natural surroundings as well as using it for super close-ups. Its ability to render fine detail makes this a standout for landscape work.
CRC (Close Range Correction) System
The Close-Range Correction (CRC) system is one of Nikon's most important focusing innovations, for it provides superior picture quality at close focusing distances and increases the focusing range. With CRC, the lens elements are configured in a "floating element" design wherein each lens group moves independently to achieve focusing. This ensures superior lens performance even when shooting at close distances. The CRC system is used in fisheye, wide-angle, micro and selected medium telephoto NIKKOR lenses.
Silent Wave Motor
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM). This technology converts “traveling waves” into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet.
M/A
Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.
Super Integrated Coating
Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.

When it comes to this lens I have mixed feelings. To tell you the truth I don’t know who to recommend it to. When you want to have a standard lens, the Nikkor 2.8/40 on DX sensor gives a bit too narrow angle of view and from that perspective it would be better if you got interested in the cheaper...
The AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8 is a sharp, compact and lightweight lens that is optimised for macro work. Delivering great resolution, good contrast and superior bokeh, all with very little distortion and chromatic aberration, the Nikon 40mm f/2.8G is an excellent performer in the optical...
What is there not to like about this 40mm macro optic from Nikon? It's lightweight, compact and delivers images with excellent sharpness and contrast with low distortion, falloff and chromatic aberrations.
The Nikon AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/3.5G ED VR is another excellent macro lens from Nikon thanks to exceptional sharpness and 1:1 magnification.
This lens is kind of an odd duck. It is the equivalent of a ff 60 macro in dx format. There are a couple of positive attributes it has going for it - good flat field, excellent sharpness from 2.8 on, small, light, and focusses pretty close, and really very affordable.
The Nikon AF-S DX 40mm f/2.8G is an impressive macro lens which offers genuine 1:1 macro capability
The price-performance ratio of the AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G is excellent and had it not been for the incredibly short working distance at 1:1, this lens would have easily earned a Highly Recommended award.
During my two month journey with the Nikon 40mm f/2.8G DX Micro, I had a number of opportunities to use the lens for different types of photography. I tried it out for macro and landscapes during my trips to Yellowstone and Colorado mountains, shot an engagement along with Lola and took pictures of...
Small, economical and excellent performance - there's a lot to like here. Nikon markets this lens as an introduction to macro photography, and I think they've done very well here to make that happen.
Don't be deceived by the lightness of this lens, in fact this a distinct advantage. Performs really well as a walkabout lens with the added advantage of macro. You have to get right up and personal with your macro subject and lighting can be a bit tricky but results are super sharp.

Good addition to my kit lens and telephoto. Good for portraits and walkabout lens but also useful to have micro facility. Superb value with no compromise on quality.
A great lens that lets you focus from virtually 0 to infinity. It is quite sharp at all apertures and from the center to the edges. Great for almost everything. For serious macro, you should consider something else as at a distance of a couple centimeters from your subject, you cast your own shadow...
I use this lens for most things, landscapes/portrait and some macro work. I was drawn to it and put off by the price, thinking a lens this cheap wouldn't give good results let alone great ones. This is an amazing great value lens, you will not be disappointed with the results.
