Great image quality from a wide-aperture standard prime lens, but the autofocus speed lets it down.

It doesn’t sound like much, but this is an incredibly important lens. Offering incredible quality that defines Sony lenses for the A7-Series, this is no exception. The aperture range offers the user a perfect balance of colour and light during even the most difficult lighting conditions whilst maintain perfect AF control for street scenes, portraits and candid shots.
Mobile and manageable for active shooting
Although it is a full-frame lens, this model is compact and weighs only 186 grams. Whether on the camera or in your bag it won't be a burden, and it'll be ready whenever needed. The size and weight of this lens are an excellent match for compact α7 series bodies, providing outstanding overall portability and handling.
Lifelike detail, texture, and gradation
An updated double-gauss optical configuration with an aspherical element minimises spherical aberration and coma for sharp, high-quality rendering throughout every frame. The double-gauss design also suppresses field curvature and distortion.
Dreamy large-aperture prime lens bokeh
A large F1.8 maximum aperture and 7-blade circular aperture work together to create beautiful background bokeh that can make subjects stand out. Placing a sharply focused subject in front of a smoothly defocused background is an essential technique for producing deep, dimensional images.
DC motor focus
A new DC motor drive system has been carefully designed and implemented for optimum focus precision and speed as well as quiet operation. This system provides the same smooth for autofocus and manual focus control. Note: Focus motor sound may be recorded when shooting movies.
Shoot at night or in dimly lit interiors
The large F1.8 maximum aperture is an advantage when shooting night scenes or in dimly lit interiors. When used with an α series camera body that features in-body image stabilisation even greater low-light capability enables handheld capture of clear images in dark scenes without having to use excessively high ISO sensitivity.
Kenko Macro Extension Tubes
- Suitable for selected Sony E mount lenses
- Includes both 16mm and 10mm Extension Tubes
- Full and perfect diaphragm (aperture) coupling
- Full and perfect TTL/EE Metering
- Use Individually or Combined
Extension tubes are designed to enable a lens to focus closer than its normal set minimum focusing distance. Getting closer has the effect of magnifying your subject (making it appear larger in the viewfinder and in your pictures). They are exceptionally useful for macro photography, enabling you to convert almost any lens into a macro lens at a fraction of the cost while maintaining its original optical quality.
These DG extension tubes have no optics. They are mounted in between the camera body and lens to create more distance between the lens and CCD plane. By moving the lens further away from the CCD sensor in the camera, the lens is forced to focus much closer than normal. The greater the length of the extension tube, the closer the lens can focus.
If you turn a blind eye to the build quality, the Sony FE 50 mm f/1.8 might be a very attractive alternative for the more expensive Zeiss Sonnar T* 55 mm f/1.8 FE. The cheaper lens is weaker at the maximum relative aperture, that’s true, but on stopping down it provides even higher MTFs while...
This lens has been a long time coming for full-frame E-mount cameras, and it certainly makes a welcome addition to Sony’s lens line-up if you’re in the market for a fast, well-priced standard prime that offers excellent image quality.
The appeal of the inexpensive fast 50mm “standard lens” is easy to appreciate and this Sony lens has much to recommend it. However, the edges are relatively soft and the price maybe a tad too high. Time will no doubt settle the latter point.
Is this budget fast prime lens the perfect choice for Alpha 7 users? Andy Westlake tests out the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8
The Sony FE 50mm f1.8 is an affordable standard prime lens for Alpha mirrorless cameras. It delivers standard coverage on full-frame bodies making it an ideal walk-around lens, and becomes a short telephoto on APSC bodies, equivalent to 75mm, making it perfect for portraits.
The Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS is a short telephoto lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. It's a strong performer thanks to sharp optics and optical stabilization.
It is compact, maintaining the spirit of Sony's smaller MILC cameras. It is light and effortless to take with you. It is cheap, making loss or damage a relatively low risk (hint for kid use). And, it is capable of excellent image quality (though not at the widest apertures).
The new Sony FE 50mm F1.4 ZA is impressive. Our friend Roger Cicala over at LensRentals notes its central sharpness performance to exceed even the venerable Zeiss Otus , as well as the Sigma 50mm Art. He even found it to out-perform the 55/1.8 centrally, but fall behind it peripherally.
The Sony 50mm FE retails for $250 and can regularly be found with Sony rebates for $200. The plastic build is about what you would expect at this price point, but the optics and image quality has shown me that this lens can punch above it’s weight when called upon.
One of the first lenses you should buy for A7 series, or if learning about depth of field and perspective. A sharp, compact inexpensive lens with solid if not class leading IQ (although there are lenses costing far more that don't perform any better) these got a bad rep for sluggish focus in earlier...
I use it mainly for photography and it is pleasantly light which goes well with crop or full frame. It can perform ok for video auto focus but it is neither as smooth or as fast as many of the alternatives. It's not a quiet lens and its speed depends on the body that it is attached to.
My new favourite prime. Sony 50mm f1.8 oss I like to film footage of different angles, product, backdrops and lighting to try and explore new ideas and with the lens it adds a whole new dimension. It is affordable and solid in the hand. Build quality is good and the bokeh is great for its price.
I have owned 50/1.8 instruments from Canon (50/1.8 II, non STM), Nikon (50/1.8G) and Sony (FE), so I'd like to compare them. On build quality the Sony is somewhat better than Canon, the most cheapskate lens of them all, built nicely with solid plastics, but I would say it's no match for the Nikon.
Very pleased with this lense. Produces sharp clear images in low light. Good for portrait photography.
The 50mm f 1.8 is a game changing! My photography improved so much with this lens! Absolute love it.
The lens is used on my Sony a6000 the pictures are outstanding, Colors are bright and vibrant, no signs of any distortion, great for low light situations, sometimes slow to focus but a very good lens.
I like this lens. I tend to use manual focus with my A7r because I'm rarely in a hurry, I like to choose the focus point and most of my other cameras are film and manual focus anyway.
I've already owned this lens in the past, but I bought this specifically for my Sony a7 for taking better photographs in low light as it has a large f/1.8 aperture. This lens is compatible with both APS-C and full frame Sony mirrorless cameras and will have a 75mm equivalent focal length on cameras...
