With its wide-angle to normal zoom range and compact build, this is an excellent walk-around lens. You’ll always be ready to tackle a whole host of subjects, from city shots and landscapes to family sporting events and action-packed HD movies. Whatever your subject, Nikon’s Vibration Reduction keeps images sharp even in low light situations. The streamlined design keeps the lens compact and comfortable for everyday carry.
Everyday life: compact, lightweight 3.1x zoom lens
Covers the popular 18–55mm focal length range (35mm equivalent: 27–82.5mm) with f/3.5–5.6 maximum aperture. From portraits to landscapes, this lens is perfect for capturing all kinds of photos. It’s also ideal for shooting HD movies.
Smooth, fast autofocus: Nikon’s Stepping Motor
Nikon’s new Stepping Motor focuses quickly and is ideal for shooting movies. Thanks to the new motor, this lens performs more quietly and is even faster than its predecessor. When zooming in to capture a photo, you can bring subjects into focus instantly and with absolute precision. When you’re shooting video footage, the motor allows you to smoothly shift focus from subject to subject with practically no drive noise.
Nikon quality images
This DX-format lens is specifically designed to make the most of your Nikon D-SLR’s high pixel count and advanced image sensor. Two aspherical lens elements minimise spherical aberration and other forms of distortion, so you can enjoy high-resolution photos and movies with vivid colour, striking contrast, and crisp detail.
Vibration Reduction (VR)
Nikon’s impressive Vibration Reduction keeps images sharp, even in low light situations. Designed to enable more stable handheld shooting, VR lets you shoot at up to four stops slower. Whether you’re taking portraits, group shots, or capturing a stunning landscape, this means you’ll be able to capture blur-free images time after time. You can turn VR on or off using the camera menu.
Simplified control
Switch between Auto Focus and Manual Focus, and turn VR on and off using the camera menu. With no switches on the lens barrel itself, there’s no chance of accidentally changing settings when you want to take the shot.

The Nikon 18-55mm AF-P VR costs around $250, for which you get solid performance. If you can grab a good set (with D3400 or D5600 or even with D7500) where you usually pay only some $100-150 USD on top of the body-alone price tag, the price / performance ratio gets even better.
This quote, taken directly from Ken Rockwell's review of this very lens, is this reason I purchased my D5600 with the 18-55mm AF-P DX VR: "This is the best basic kit lens ever offered.
I purchased this lens to use as a light and cheap alternative to my other glasses when I work in the forest. It works perfectly on my D 7200 after a small micro focus adjustment. At 18 mm one needs to close the aparture with two stops or so to get good sharpness in the corners of the frame.

This lens is optically great, but a fell things are very annoying: Having to unlock the lens to retract or extend is annoying and makes you wast time. Having to access the menu to turn the VR on and off is another very annoying thing.

Bought mine to use with my Nikon 1 cameras, and the DX cameras, and in an emergency functional with my D600 (lens hood off!). Truly delightful with Nikon 1 cameras (you need the FT1 adapter, of course), excellent with DX, and at normal focal lengths OK with my old D600.
After having bought the outstanding AF-P 70-300mm DX VR lens, I thought I would try this AF-P 18-55mm because of the many great reviews. I have the original AF-S 18-55mm VR (not VRII) released in 2006 as the kit lens for my D3100, so I thought I would get this new AF-P lens for my D5600 as an...
It straight out the box with my D5300, Viewfinder Focus is lot faster than before, lens is lightweight and feel good in hand, focus ring is extremely smooth too. what i don't like there is no button in any side of the lenses and the barrel distorsion is higher than most Kit lenses, in 18mm, the...
so the AF are incrediby fast compared with AF-S lens and the image quality are pleasant, the lens is lightweight
one thing i don't like it is the 18mm are very distorted, so i have to turn on in camera lens distorsion control in order to reduce the distorsion (still not perfect) not a big...
I bought this as a like for like replacement on a lens that got water damage. It is an excellent wide angle lens that has seen years of good service and will continue to too.
