If you were a perverse and malicious being, you would start the summary of this test this way: although the Nikkor AF-S 85 mm f/1.4G costs almost 1700 $, it gives us more or less the same the image quality at the maximum relative aperture as the Samyang 1.4/85, which costs about 300 $.

Employing a re-designed optical system that includes Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) and Nano Crystal Coat (N), the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G inherits its predecessor’s ultra-fast f/1.4 maximum aperture and rounded nine-blade diaphragm for superior depth-of-field control and background blur (bokeh). Engineered to inspire new levels of creativity and artistry, the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G will unleash the full potential of your Nikon D-SLR or HD-SLR—in the studio or in the field.
Ultra-fast f/1.4 medium-telephoto lens
The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G is an advanced lens, optimized for today’s D-SLR and HD-SLR cameras. Its medium-telephoto angle-of-view is ideal for portraits and general photography in the studio or in the field. Its ultra-fast f/1.4 aperture with a rounded nine-blade diaphragm creates beautiful, natural background blur and enables shooting in dramatic low-light situations. Take your creativity to new heights.
Unmistakable Nikon quality
Every detail was considered in the making of the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G, resulting in a remarkable, versatile lens. Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) provides ultra-fast, ultra-quiet autofocus operation with seamless manual focus override. Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) and Nano Crystal Coat (N) work together to virtually eliminate ghosting and lens flare and to assure uniform colour balance and contrast.
Nano Crystal Coat
An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon that virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths.
M/A
Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens.
IF Lens
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
Silent Wave Motor
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor, which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology.
Super Integrated Coating
Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.

A wide aperture short-telephoto lens with a silent focusing motor and Nikon's latest Nano Crystal lens coatings.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G is the go-to lens for shooting portraits with a shallow depth of field, but is more expensive than third-party alternatives.
I had the 1.8G but after getting a 105mm F2 DC I wasn't using it. So I decided to upgrade to the 85mm 1.4G. The main benefit has been shooting at 1.4 and 1.6 for family/candids which the 1.8 can't do. The 1.8G is sharp but it seemed clinically sharp instead of flatteringly sharp.
Nikon's flagship wide aperture portrait lens receives a facelift, gaining a silent-wave focusing motor and Nano Crystal Coatings to reduce ghosting and flare. Here, Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at how it performs.
The price tag might not suit everyone's budget, but this optic's performance is hard to argue with
So this is a tough one. There is a lot to like in the new Nikon 85mm ƒ/1.4G. The addition of nano-crystal coating will help to contend with flare issues that were something of an issue with the previous 'D' version of the lens.
Overall, what gets me excited about this lens isn't so much the fantastic performance, but the signal of commitment by Nikon to put out great glass for professionals and dentists.
I use the 85mm 1.4g on my d3s and it is flawless. I shoot a lot of portraits and headshots and the results are just stunning even at 1.4 the images are great. (providing YOU have focused correctly) The AF is reasonably fast, its slower than the 24-70 and 70-200 but it's light!

a very nice lens if you manage the focus precision, but considering the price the sombrero effect is really annoying. Find a used one or buy a Sigma instead
an awesome update to an already great lens from Nikon, tack sharp wide open with wonderfull bokeh to out of focus areas. Stopping down just increases depth of field. I love the new build quality of modern Nikkor lenses, the plastic is very high grade and warmer to the touch than the old metal lenses...
Image quality from this lens is excellent throughout. At 1.4 it can be a little soft but that's to be expected. Skin tones are fantastic and very flattering due to the slightly warm tint it produces. The AF is very accurate and consistent although not particularly fast.

This is such a lovely lens, the photo quality is stunning, sharp and the bokeh really defines it. Its quick and great in low light. I love using it when photographing weddings and would recommend it without a second thought.
