Rugged, lightweight and versatile, the AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 12–24mm f/4G IF-ED is a fantastic travel and adventure companion.

Advanced Nikon lens technologies

The AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 12–24mm f/4G IF-ED combines a wider angle-of-view with optical characteristics that are optimized for advanced DX-format Nikon D-SLR camera sensors. The lens produces a smaller image circle (the size of the image projected onto the sensor), enabling a smaller lens diameter and optimal image quality from centre to edge to corner. Its rounded diaphragm makes out of focus elements appear more natural, and its Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass ensures superior sharpness and colour performance.

Silent Wave Motor

AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM). This technology converts “traveling waves” into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet.

ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass

An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.

AS stands for Aspherical lens elements. This type of lens utilizes non-spherical surfaces on either one or both sides of the glass in order to eliminate certain types of lens aberration.

Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.

IF Lens

A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.

I wanted something wider than what I owned (used 30-35 F2.8 on FX film cameras) for my DX bodies---a really mint used example came my way at a decent price---used it in variety of indoor events---liked it VERY much---bright and sharp most everywhere (mostly used with SB800 flash)---just a great lens...

What Digital Camera

Nikon's Nikkor AF-S 12-24mm has a constant f/4 through the zoom range. What Digital Camera's Nikkor AF-S 12-24mm f/4 G ED IF DX lens review sees if it's as good as buy as it seems...

Nikon were the first to produce a dedicated ultra wide angle lens for their cropped sensor cameras and they obviously put all their experience of both SLR lenses and wide angle for smaller sensor (Coolpix) lenses to full use.

This is seriously wide, making it really versatile and valuable for when there's little room or you've got to get a lot in the shot; think press, weddings, events, architecture and some kinds of landscape. If you can get close enough, it's fantastic for wildlife too!

Good all round performer, this lens, especially nice performance in the center. Distortion is well controlled in this wide angle.

"Lens completely lived up to my expectations, performed as described. When used on my D300 it extended my range of coverage very nicely into the wide angle."

"Low distortion (for a wide), sharp as a tac, f/2.8 and excellent build quality. So many good things to say about this lens. Spends a lot of walk around time on my D90 because it's a joy to shoot with. Ken is right."

The lense is very solid and mine performs well with being sharp with excellent contrast in the color rendition. Post processing is needed to capture the full capability of the lense. I use DXO and it correct the distortion from being a wide angle in close quarters.

B&H Photo

First off, I'm new to this type of camera. I've only had good but still point and shoot cameras. I bought a Nikon D7200 camera and lens kit, not too impressed with the two lens that came with it. Did a little research and for the money this seemed like a good lens.

I shoot candid photojournalism and some landscape. 12-24 is a great range for this purpose. The lens matches my D200 well and since its mostly enclosed and non telescoping, I even take it out in heavy rain with just a tightly screwed on UV filter, a pierced ziploc bag and a bunch of rubber bands to...

This lens opens new experiences. Can't imagine which can be a better wide zoom for DX Nikons. At 18-36mm covers great wide angle range.

B&H Photo

A simply amazing lens. A must have for any landscape photographer.

What can I say, if you like wide angles then this is for you. Damn... I miss the DOF scales, this lens is perfect for Hyperfocal. You can get close and still don't distort, unbelievable for landscapes.
