Product Details

The Nikon 50mm f1.4 G AF-S is a wide-aperture standard lens with high-quality optics and Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for whisper-quiet operation.

  • F-Mount Lens/FX Format
  • Aperture Range: f/1.4 to f/16
  • Super Integrated Lens Coating
  • Silent Wave Motor AF System
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

Ultra-Fast, Amazingly Sharp

Expect outstanding image quality, edge-to-edge sharpness and high contrast with the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G. Brilliant for portrait photography, general use (focuses as close as 1.5 feet) and video recording, this high quality lens produces tack sharp images and conquers low light environments with ease. If you are looking for an ultra-fast prime lens that gives you a standard angle of view, superior colour reproduction and smooth, natural background blur (bokeh), this is the lens for you.

Ultra-fast f/1.4 aperture and rounded 9-blade diaphragm

With a maximum aperture of f/1.4 and Nikon’s unique rounded 9-blade diaphragm, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G renders a remarkably smooth, natural background blur (bokeh). This makes it an ideal lens for portraits—subjects can be isolated from their backgrounds for a dramatic composition.

Great for FX- and DX-format DSLRs

The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G offers a classic, “normal” (50mm) angle of view when used on an FX-format DSLR or 35mm film camera. When used on a DX-format camera, however, it becomes an ideal portrait lens, approximating the moderate telephoto perspective of a 75mm lens on an FX-format DSLR or 35mm film camera. Close focusing to 1.5 ft extends versatility.

Classic portraits with a classic lens

The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G allows for a comfortable working distance between you and your subject - producing a more natural response.

A must-have for professionals and enthusiasts alike

When used on an FX DSLR, the perspective rendered by the 50mm nearly matches the human eye. The background blur is exaggerated thanks to its f/1.4 aperture. This results in a natural appearance of the subject within the image.  When used on a DX DSLR, the 50mm lens acts as a 75mm portrait lens with the subject filling more of the frame.

Silent Wave Motor

AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor, which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology.

M/A

Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens.

Super Integrated Coating

Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.

Verdict: This lightweight lens boasts fantastic sharpness, excellent build quality smooth bokeh. The vignetting is noticeable when shooting wide open and there is a little barrel distortion, but nothing that can’t be fixed with editing.

LensTip.com

The Nikkor AF-S 50 mm f/1.4G premiere was well- timed without doubt. It made all the Nikon reflex cameras owners very happy – users of Nkon D40/40x, D60 or D5000 were finally given a clear standard without the necessity of manual focus.

ePHOTOzine

Having owned the older AF-D version for some time, I can say this update is a welcome one. The build and silent focusing are welcome refinements, even if the focusing speed does seem a little slow.

Practical Photography

Nikon was responsible for the first 50mm f/1.4 back in 1950, and has continued to produce amazing updates ever since.

The Age

This is a 50mm Nikkor prime lens with a maximum aperture of f1.4. Auto focusing is by Nikon's Silent Wave Motor and it works with the Nikon D40/60 range of cameras that are not fitted with in-body focus drives.

Fredmiranda

My favorite lens of all time - I use it at every session.

DP Review

The AF-S Nikkor 50mm F1.4G was, at its introduction, hailed by Nikon as 'redefining the standard lens concept'. It turns out that in many ways that was no idle boast - in almost all respects the lens is clearly improved over its predecessor, the AF-Nikkor 50mm F1.4D .

What Digital Camera

As our AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G review discovers, this flagship prime lens from Nikon delivers excellent results in a small and lightweight package.

I Shoot Shows

Pros: Cons: Overall, I think that the new 50mm f/1.4 AF-S is a great little lens, and I'm glad to see that the old AF-D model has finally been replaced. There's a lot to like about the new and improved lens – better image quality all around and lots of small improvements in the overall design.

SLR Lens and Camera Reviews

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G is the latest update to the venerable Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D. The Nikon communality has been expecting this lens for quite some time now, considering that the previous version of the lens was introduced in 1995 and has not seen any updates since then.

Excellent price and a great lens for me as a beginner after working with my kit lens. The pictures are sharp, bokeh is great and the focus is quick and quiet. Overall very happy as my pictures have dramatically improved without having to invest in an expensive lens.

Wex Photo Video

Have only slightly used at the moment, but I am already impressed the speed of focus, how light it is and its low light capabilities

Castle Cameras

very pleased with the 50mm so far getting what I hoped for , sharp crisp images

LensTip.com

not a bad lense... but better have a look at the latest 1.8G when you're nikon shooter. If you are 50mm aficionado and have the wallet and don't mind changing system go buy a Sony camera for the Autofocus Sony Carl zeiss Planar T*50mm 1.4. It's another galaxy

Wex Photo Video

I like to use this lens most of the time, great focal length on my D750. Idea for night time photography, general use and portraits. I am always very pleased with my images after I have used this lens.

John Lewis

A very good standard lens, which is far better quality than the kit lens supplied with cameras. I have a D5600. Great for portraits. The wider aperture is a great improvement. Be warned that the 50mm lens on the smaller format Nikon DSLRs is the equivalent of a 72 mm lens.

LensTip.com

Nothing spectacular. Typical current Nikkor quality. Marginally better than 1.8G, which seems to be better value for money.

Wex Photo Video

Excellent sharp lens, I use this on my crop censor and my f80 film camera for all occasions but mainly street photography along side the 35mm 1.8g which I also highly recommend! This lens is sharper than the 1.4g across the whole frame save a few pounds and buy this you won't regret it!

John Lewis

Perfect for all my needs. Im an amateur photographer just starting out and this is a perfect lens that I use all the time

LensTip.com

On DX it's my 'bread-and-butter' Queen. And in when flash is not a solution, it just make the difference between a blurred picture and a picture I can sell.
