The Sigma 105 mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro, compared to its immediate stabilized rivals, is a bit optically worse, features higher vignetting, works not as efficiently against bright light and has a slower autofocus. What’s interesting, it is also more expensive than them.

High performance, large aperture medium telephoto macro lens incorporating Sigma’s Optical Stabiliser function.
Sigma’s medium telephoto macro lens incorporates Optical Stabilisation allowing the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. SLD glass provides good control of aberration and the floating inner focus system ensures high rendering throughout the focusing range. By using Sigma’s APO Tele Converters, it is possible to take photos at greater than 1:1 magnification. HSM ensures a quiet and high speed AF as well as full-time manual focus override. This lens has a rounded 9 blades diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas.
Large aperture medium telephoto macro lens
This medium telephoto macro lens allows you to maintain an appropriate distance from subjects while still getting close up photos. Since the working distance at its closest focusing position is 142mm, shadows of the lens and camera will not affect photography making it suitable for taking photos of subjects, such as flowers, under natural lighting conditions. In comparison to the Sigma 50mm and 70mm macro lenses, the main subjects can be defined with perfectly smooth and blurred backgrounds.
High rendering performance
The lens power layout produces excellent optical performance. High refractive index SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass corrects chromatic aberration, spherical aberration and field curvature. It ensures high rendering performance at all shooting distances. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting, maintaining quality images with high contrast.
Handheld photography with ease
Sigma’s OS (Optical Stabiliser) system offers effective correction of approximately 4 stops. As the stabilisation effect is visible through the viewfinder, it aids composition and accurate focusing.
* The OS effectiveness will gradually decrease as the shooting distance becomes shorter.
Floating inner focusing
This lens incorporates floating inner focusing which moves two lens groups separately. This minimises aberrations which occur as shooting distance changes and enables stable rendering of the image from infinity to 1:1 magnification. This also corrects image distortion, especially when taking close-up pictures. Since focusing does not change its overall length, this lens is easy to hold and use.
Quiet and high-speed AF
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) provides quiet and high speed autofocus. It is also possible to use full-time manual focus, even if the lens is set to the AF position.
Rounded 9 blades diaphragm
This lens has a rounded 9 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas. This also creates smooth, rounded out of focus highlights when taking photos which have a strong light source in the background such as lights shining on the surface of water.

Anyone who has considered buying a macro lens in the past 19 years will probably have looked at a 105mm macro. The focal length is long enough to provide some distance between you and the subject without the field of view and higher price of a 200mm optic.
Although it’s not the cheapest of lenses, the Sigma 105mm macro proved to be worth its price-tag. The HyperSonic Motor provided the fastest and most accurate AF and the Optical Stabilizer was invaluable for handheld shots, but where the lens really excelled was in the image quality it produced.
The Sigma AF 105mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM OS macro is an impressive lens - both on in its native full format scope and even more so on APS-C format cameras. The APS-C resolution characteristic is great even at f/2.8 and the high quality is basically kept till about f/11.

The 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens is Sigma's first macro lens to feature OS (Optical Stabilization) and replaces the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens . The Sigma 105 OS Macro lens has been in my kit for just over two years and has seen intermittently regular use.
Sigma has produced an excellent macro lens in the 105mm ƒ/2.8 EX DG OS HSM - it does away with an antiquated and confusing focusing system by using the HSM system, and offers optical stabilization.

The Sigma AF 105mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM OS macro is an impressive lens. The resolution is generally very high although the border quality could be a little better at large aperture settings. Typical for macro lenses distortions are a non-issue. Vignetting is only a real problem at f/2.8.

First fully fledged Macro lens mounted on my Nikon D800 and Nikon Z6, used mainly for wild flowers and insects as I hike on the Surrey Hills. Excellent, first results, very pleased with the lens and great value when compared to the significantly more expensive native lenses for these two bodies.
I've used Castle Cameras for several years now as their knowledge and advice is second to none. I bought the new model Sigma 105mm macro as a replacement for my old one (the auto motor had stopped working). It's a fantastic upgrade - the stabilisation really helps. Highly recommend it.
Couldn’t be any happier with the purchase of this lense. As a newby to photography I found an enjoyment with macro photography using a tameron 70-300 zoom lense and after about 6 months of looking I bought this lense and I’m absolutely over the moon that I did 100% recommended
I bought this lens for macro photography, for which it is excellent. I also wanted a wide aperture lens to use for differential focus, and it fits that bill very well, too. It performs well and is easy to use.
Top quality product. A little noisy when using auto focus, but does not detract from how good the lens is. Clarity is superb.
I purchased this lense for my Canon 5D4, This Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro is an impressive lens that feels robust and handles well. The internal focusing along with stabilisation has added weight and bulk to the lens, making it useful for handheld work at less than 1:1 magnification.
This lens is an absolute work horse, every shot is crisp and sharp with beautiful bokeh
An old lens, but still gives great performance and quality images on crop sensor Canon 90D. It takes a little while to get the best camera settings to work with Sigma 105mm, however once there it produces excellent images. Would I recommend - yes.

A lovely smooth and sharp lens, I think this is one of the best macro lenses of this focal length in this price bracket. Can be used with ASP-C or Full Frame cameras and the the inclusion of lens hoods for both formats was a nice bonus. A nice lens and well worth the purchase.
Fantastic lens! Overall this a great lens, at wide open apertures (f/2.8) you get that insanely fine depth-of-field and the high-granularity of the focus ring makes fine-tuning very easy. The autofocus mode control allows you to change the distance range that the camera will try and autofocus within, this helps stop 'focus hunting' with fixed distance subjects. Having Optical Stabilisation is a great help when out and about with this lens as well.
I'm just a keen amateur, and had wanted to get a decent macro lens for a long time, but been put off by the cost, so when I found this one in the sale, and after reading the reviews, I decided to purchase this one. I'm so pleased with this lens, my photography has been taken to another level. And with the optical stabiliser I'm still able to get perfect clear shots when taking photos of butterflies and bees without using a tripod. And the length means I don't need to get that close, so don't frighten off my subject. I've also used it for general portrait shots and been pleasantly surprised with the outcome
This is my first Sigma lens, (Canon EF version on EOS R) and I was impressed with build quality, the case for storage and that it comes with a lens hood. I get very sharp pictures and have found it excellent for capturing the birds in my garden. The image stabilisation works well. This is a heavy lens, which is understandable, but you won’t want to be carrying it around all day, unless your looking to save on your gym subscription. All in all I can highly recommend this lens for capturing high quality wildlife images.
Fantastic bang for the buck lens , excellent packaging , premium feel to this lens. A tad noisy when using optical stabilisation but other wise a great lens
