An excellent choice as a second lens to supplement a basic lens kit, this full-frame 28mm wide-angle prime features a bright F2.0 maximum aperture and outstanding overall optical performance. Advanced optics deliver excellent sharpness right out to the image edges plus beautifully smooth bokeh when needed. A maximum aperture of F2.0 makes it easier to shoot clear images handheld indoors or in dim lighting. An inner focus mechanism achieves stable, quiet autofocus operation that is ideal for movies as well as stills. For even wider perspectives an optional 21mm Ultra-wide Converter and 16mm Fisheye Converter with full 180° (diagonally) coverage1 are available for extra expressive potential.

Prime lens resolution and contrast

Advanced fixed focal length optics effectively minimize aberration from infinity right down to the closest focusing distance for excellent sharpness throughout the image area. All lens surfaces are multi-coated to minimize backlighting induced flare and ghosting for maximum subject clarity and contrast.

Smooth, expressive bokeh

A 9-blade circular aperture works with this lens’s large aperture to produce smooth, beautiful background bokeh.

Small and light for everyday photography

The compact, lightweight design of this full-frame lens is an ideal match for compact α7 series bodies. At only 200 grams it is a convenient choice for snapshots and everyday use, and an aluminium alloy exterior adds elegant appearance as well as sophisticated feel.

Explore prime lens performance

An ideal second lens for full-frame photographers who want to explore the superior sharpness and expressive potential of a high-performance prime lens. An optical design that includes 3 aspherical(one is an advanced aspherical element) lens elements and 2 ED elements packs outstanding optical performance into a compact lens, and a bright F2.0 maximum aperture makes low-light shooting easy.

Optimized for movies as well as stills

A precision linear actuator built into the lens drives the focusing mechanism smoothly and quietly, and inner focus means that the lens does not extend while focusing. Quiet operation and stable handling are significant advantages when shooting movies.

High reliability in harsh conditions

A design the resists the intrusion of dust and moisture enhances reliability in harsh environments, letting you shoot with confidence wherever you go.

The list above seems to indicate the Sony's FE 28 mm f/2 number of flaws is rather high. Does it mean our summary cannot be positive? Quite the contrary! To be honest I don't have any problems with these flaws because I like lenses of this type very much – small, shapely, sensibly priced instrument...

Photography BLOG

The Sony FE 28mm f/2 is a very competent and affordable wide-angle prime lens for the Sony full-frame compact system cameras. This compact optic delivers excellent sharpness in the centre of the frame almost throughout its aperture range, even performing well wide-open, although you'll need to stop...

This lens has a lot going for it. It's capable of delivering high levels of sharpness, it's compact, relatively lightweight and not too expensive. It's a shame the aperture has to be stopped down to improve performance towards the edges of the frame, and to reduce chromatic aberrations, but overall...

Amateur Photographer

The smallest of Sony’s latest round of FE lenses is well worth considering, as Andy Westlake finds out.

The Sony FE 28mm f/2 lens represents excellent value for money and promises to deliver superior performance on Sony’s α7-series cameras, particularly those with lower resolution (which means most of them).

Camera Labs

Sony's FE 28mm f2 is a compact and affordable wide-angle prime lens for Sony mirrorless cameras, that's corrected for use on full-frame bodies. The small size and light-weight make it a perfect companion for Sony's smaller bodies, while a pair of optional adapters transform it into a 21mm ultra-wide...

The Digital Picture

The moderately wide angle focal length can be used in a wide array of scenarios. This lens is nicely designed and very compact, making it burdenless to take with you. The wide open image quality is just OK, but stopped down, this lens impresses. Well, except for the barrel distortion.

Trail to Peak

Photographer Chase Jarvis famously said, “the best camera is the one you have with you”. This quote is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the Sony 28mm f/2. This lens is light, small, and highly capable, which means I can take it with me everywhere.

Mirror Lessons

While we can no longer complain about the lack of native FE lenses given that 15 have been produced in just two years, the Sony full-frame lineup is still missing a series of high quality/affordable glass.

Imaging Resource

Sony's produced a nice optic in the form of the 28mm FE ƒ/2 - it hits a good price point for what you get, if you don't mind paying a slight premium for it. This wide-angle prime is compact, making it a great option for a small walkaround lens, plus the 28mm focal length is a great option for...

Very small and light so great for carrying around and outdoor work. The f2 is very useable and not as soft as some reviews suggest, though at the f20 and f22 end it does get a bit soft. Not so hot on starburst effects, I find.

I bought this lens 2 weeks ago and am loving it for its usefulness as an all around lens because it's so compact! I literally bring it everywhere I go!

Excellent walk-about lens for Sony full frame cameras, nice and compact and really nice out of focus areas. Sharp in the centre from f/2, and the corners sharpen up very quickly when stopping down.

Bought in conjunction with the 21mm Ultra wide conversion and very happy. 28mm is one of my favorite focal lengths and this gives very pleasing results. The Ultra wide is a simple attachment for those specious scenes when required. Great price as well.

Very fast focusing and excellent in low light. Great photos even when I use the digital zoom on my Sony a6000 and a full frame lens using a APC sensor. Small size which fits in my bag. If asked I will recommend this lens.

A good compromise between 35mm and 24mm wide angles and compact in size so it balances the camera nicely.

Bought this Lens a month ago and I love it great depth of field and good everyday prime.

I just bought this lens to add to my collection and I simply love it. It's a tiny bit soft in the corners, but for the size, quick and silent auto focus and portability you can't beat it.

Used the lens on my Sony A6000 on a break recently in Cornwall. This lens proved to be my everyday carry around lens with an ideal focal length of 42mm on the A6000. Very sharp even wide open and performed really well in some indoor settings like Turo Cathedral where the faster aperture was needed. But also ideal in good conditions like the narrow streets of St Ives on a bright day. Fixed FL certainly makes you look for opportunities a lot more and think about the composition, where a zoom can make you very lazy. Enjoying this new approach and never needed the kit lens. Think I'm going to sell it to fund another fast fixed prime. Might even go legacy and manual focus because I'm finding the AF focus, although quick and accurate with this lens, and ideal for most circumstances, can hinder with a wide aperature. By using manual focus with focus assist you can get the focus pin sharp exactly where you want it to be, and isolate the subject with great bokeh. This lens with its sharpness and good colour rendering has reignited my photography. It also reminds you that above all, you have to do the foot work to achieve improved results.
