I would have a huge problem if I had to say why there are two Nikkors 18-300 mm present on the market. Perhaps underestimating the rivals is one of the reasons. In 2012 Nikon, by offering an 18-300 mm model as the first, managed to beat Tamron when it comes to the focal range.

One outstanding lens; endless beautiful memories.
The world is full of amazing views—some right in front of us, others far in the distance. Capture all of them beautifully with a single lens, the outstanding all-in-one telephoto zoom AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR. Surprisingly compact and lightweight for a 16.7x zoom lens, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR draws great performance from Nikon DX-format D-SLRs and is a highly versatile second lens. Shoot wide-angle scenic landscapes and group photos, portraits with softly blurred backgrounds, super-telephoto close-ups and everything in between—if you can see it, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR can capture it. Optimized for shooting both stills and HD videos, it features specialized Vibration Reduction technology for tack-sharp photos and steady videos, even when your hands are a bit shaky. And since it's a NIKKOR, it features some of the best optics available. Whether you're looking for maximum versatility in a lens or you're just the kind of photographer who finds inspiration all around, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR will help you capture more of life's great views.
16.7x wide-angle to super-telephoto zoom
The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR can do just about anything—stills, videos, landscapes, interiors, portraits, wildlife...you name it. Its massive zoom range goes from wide-angle (27mm equivalent in 35mm) all the way to super-telephoto (450mm equivalent in 35mm), so you can catch stunning close-ups of concert performers and athletes as easily as wide scenic shots. Its compact, balanced design and Vibration Reduction technology help keep photos sharp and videos steady, and the lens' fast, quiet autofocus system minimizes camera noise during video recording.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization
A little camera shake can ruin an otherwise great photos or video, especially when shooting at super-telephoto distances. To combat camera shake, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR features Nikon's Vibration Reduction technology, which provides 4.0 stops* of blur-free handheld shooting. Capture crisp, clear photos and steady videos even if your hands are a bit unsteady. Additionally, VR is a big advantage in low-light situations—slow down your shutter speed without compromising sharpness.
Superb image quality and consistency
Like all renowned NIKKOR lenses, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR delivers stunning image quality—vibrant colour, sharp detail, and minimal distortion. To enhance that superb optical performance and increase its versatility as both a photo and video lens, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR includes Nikon's advanced lens technologies like Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for ultra-fast, near-silent autofocusing, three Aspherical (AS) and Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements for maximum contrast and minimal lens flare and ghosting, a rounded 7-blade diaphragm for beautiful, natural background blur and Internal Focusing (IF) for a more compact, streamlined lens design.
- A-M: A-M stands for Auto-Manual Mode. Thanks to a mechanism incorporated in the lens barrel, smooth focusing operation in Manual focus mode is realized in the same way as users have become accustomed to with conventional manual-focus lenses by adding an appropriate torque to the focus ring.
- AS: AS stands for Aspherical lens elements. This type of lens utilizes non-spherical surfaces on either one or both sides of the glass in order to eliminate certain types of lens aberration.
- ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass: An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
- IF Lens: A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
- Silent Wave Motor: AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM). This technology converts “traveling waves” into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet.
- Vibration Reduction: A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel.

Those looking for a convenient all-in-one zoom lens for travel, or simply to cut down on lens changes will love the extreme zoom range this 18-300mm lens offers. Sacrificing the f/5.6 maximum aperture at 300mm of this lens' predecessor is a worthwhile compromise in my opinion, as it has resulted in...
When Nikon announced a smaller, lighter and cheaper alternative to its AF-S Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens, we expected it to be inferior on all fronts. Well, we were in for a surprise.
The Nikon PC Nikkor 19mm f/4E ED is a speciality lens capable of shift and tilt movements. Image quality is strong, but its asking price is quite high.
The Nikon AF-S DX 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR is a neat and travel-friendly superzoom for Nikon DSLR cameras...
I bought this lens together with a Nikon D7200 and they create a perfect match. With the great sensitivity of the D7200 there is no need to bring another lens unless you do specialized work.
This super-zoom lens for Nikon DX format DSLRs covers a huge 16.7x zoom range, equivalent to 27-450mm on a 35mm camera. It sports internal focusing, and Nikon's Vibration Reduction system.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR lens entices buyers with a long zoom range, but image quality at the telephoto end is lacking.
We bought this lens for our Nikon D7000 which is used mainly by my wife. She doesn't want the hassle of changing lenses so this is ideal. If you shoot in RAW, as we both do, then distortion is corrected in post processing so is a non issue (for us).
A big improvement on the kit lens supplied when I bought the D5600. Very light too and I'm getting used to using this lens for all my wide-angle and telephoto shots. Recommended.

I have had this several months now and love it, While out and about its perfect no more lens changing for me, I had an 18 - 55 kit lens and a 55 - 300 Lens and this has replaced them perfectly, really very happy with it no downsides for me :)
This lens has become the default lense for anything up close to a good zoom. There are many special lenses like the macro 105mm but this isnt a special lens as it has a large range, take the photo of people, tge family pet, or the tree some distance away.Move the lens in and out manually, then press...
Just wanted that all round lens. It didn't have to be perfect, just do the job. So far I'm very happy with the results. The images it takes seem pretty good to me the VR works very well, out of focus backgrounds are pleasing to the eye. Distortion seems to be taken care of by my D7100 and Lightroom.

Great lens, handy for holidays, but.........After a bit of use the lens drops from 35mm / 100mm when shooting objects downwards. I was photographing my jewellery and couldn't stop the lens from falling to 100mm without a firm grip.
Takes pin sharp photos, excellent for nature photography. I am disappointed there is no infinity marks for manual focus, which I find an inconvenience for night and low light shots, also the focus ring is very 'slack' and therefore can easily be moved accidentally.
I replaced my ageing 18-200mm zoom which I loved, glad I did, this lens is way better! It weighs less, it’s more compact and 50% longer at the telephoto end. Close up is almost macro and images are crisp and vibrant. On the downside, the autofocus is a little slow so not great for moving objects. Overall, the perfect lens for travel and very keenly priced.
