The definitive large-aperture APS-C format standard zoom lens.

What makes a standard lens ideal for you? Certain important qualities are required, such as fast maximum aperture, versatility for snap shots, portraiture and indoor photography plus a good combination of a wide range of focal lengths in a compact design. SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM is the first zoom lens ever to achieve a maximum aperture of f1.8 throughout the zoom range. It is a wide aperture, standard zoom-lens for digital single lens reflex camera's with APS-C size sensor's. *1The lens has a focal range equivalent to 27mm - 52.5mm in a 35mm format and it can cover the angles of view of multiple fixed focal length lenses. This wide aperture, standard zoom lens enables the photographer to expand creative possibilities on any occasion.

*1 As of April, 2013.
* Angle of view differs on cameras to which the lens is attached.

Our Art line delivers high-level artistic quality

Sigma is organizing all its interchangeable lenses into three product lines; Contemporary, Art and Sports. Designed with a focus on sophisticated optical performance and abundant expressive power, our Art line delivers high-level artistic expression. Developed with the maximum emphasis on artistic touch, they are designed to meet the expectations of users who value a creative, dramatic outcome above compactness and multifunction. Along with landscapes, portraits, still-life, close-up and casual snaps, they are perfect for the kind of photography that unleashes the inner artist. Ideal for studio photography, they offer just as much expressive scope when capturing architecture, starry skies, underwater shots and many other scenes.

Excellent Usability

A zoom lens is very convenient as it offers various angles of view just by rotating the zoom ring. However, the down side was that no zoom lens ever offered a faster aperture than f2.8 which led photographers to select fixed focal length lenses for brighter images. While the aperture value of prime lenses is superior to zoom lenses, their field of view is always the same, and therefore it was always necessary to carry many fixed focal length lenses. SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM is a new generation lens that can deliver images at f1.8 aperture throughout its focal length. The bright viewfinder is very helpful for checking the focus and composition of the image. If it is compared with a lens of F2.8, the faster shutter speed and the shallow depth of field of F1.8 further expands creativity. From wide to standard range this lens offers the excellent versatility and performance of multiple fixed focal length lenses.

Fruit of cutting edge technology

To achieve a wide zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f1.8, various technical problems need to be overcome. As the aperture value gets larger, the depth of focus becomes shallower, thus it makes the lens design extremely complicated in order to compensate for various distortions, such as spherical, axial chromatic and astigmatic aberration along with curvature of field. In order to compensate for astigmatic aberration across the entire focal range, we have relied on the experience and know how gained when designing our super wide angle zoom lenses such as SIGMA12-24mm F4.5-5.6 II DG HSM and SIGMA 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM. In addition, the technological innovation at our Aizu factory also contributes to better lens production. It has enabled us to develop a wide glass-molded aspheric lens, and the incorporation of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass has optimized power distribution of the optical elements and compensated for various aberrations as well as curvature of field at the widest angle. Thanks to our knowledge of lens design accumulated over a long period of time plus the latest lens manufacturing techniques, SIGMA has finally made the dream of a zoom lens with F1.8 throughout its entire focal range come true.

Convenient handling

Convenient handling is achieved by incorporating internal focusing and zooming which prevents any change in the length of the lens when focusing and zooming. It is possible to use a specialist filter, such as a Circular Polarizer, as the front part of the lens does not rotate.

Designed to minimize flare and ghosting

Flare and ghosting were thoroughly measured and monitored from an early stage in the lenses development to establish an optical design which is resistant to strong incidental light such as backlight. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions. Attaching the matched petal type hood, which is supplied, will provide extra protection from flare and ghosting.

Minimum focusing distance of 28cm

With a minimum focusing distance of 28cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.3, this lens is excellent for close-up photography.

Hyper Sonic Motor

The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function. Optimizing AF algorithm, smoother AF is achieved. It also enables full-time manual focusing capability which allows sensible focus adjustment by simply rotating the focus ring.

Incorporating Rounded diaphragm

The 9 blade rounded diaphragm creates an attractive round bokeh at large-aperture settings.

Design concept

The new product lines incorporate rubber for the attachment part of the provided lens hood. For better usability, the designs of the lens cap and AF/MF changeover switch have been improved. In order to ensure high accuracy of the product, all metallic parts and the new compound material, TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), which has a high affinity to metal parts, are housed internally. On the lens barrel, the last three digits of its release year are engraved so the lens can be identified according to the year of its launch.

Brass made bayonet mount

This lens incorporates a brass made bayonet mount which has both high accuracy and durability. A special treatment to reinforce its strength is applied to the surface giving it greater strength and making it highly resistant to long-term use.

Newly developed “USB DOCK” exclusively for new product lines

Based on these new lines, we have developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus.

Evaluation with Sigma's own MTF measuring system “A1”

We used to measure lens performance with MTF measuring system using conventional sensors. However, we've now developed our own proprietary MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system (A1) using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of our quality control inspections. The SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM will all be checked using this “A1” before they are shipped.

“Made in Japan”

Optimizing quality with our integrated production system, Sigma is focused on making things right, with our own hands and our own techniques. We are now one of the very few manufacturers whose products are solely “made in Japan.” We like to think our products are somehow imbued with the essence of our homeland, blessed as it is with clean air and water, and focused, hard-working people. We pride ourselves on the authentic quality of Sigma products, born of a marriage between highly attuned expertise and intelligent, advanced technology. Our sophisticated products have satisfied professionals and lovers of photography all over the world, because our manufacturing is based on genuine craftsmanship, underpinned by the passion and pride of our experts.

The centre third of the lens is home to a focussed-distance window with markings in both feet and metres, together with an AF/MF slider that displays a white panel when AF mode is selected.

You should congratulate the Sigma Corporation and their optics specialists for two reasons. Firstly for their courage – they attempted to produce an instrument no other company had tried to construct before. Such a situation a lot can be forgiven so their product didn’t have to be outstanding.

Photography BLOG

On paper the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM effectively replaces fast 28mm, 35mm and 50mm equivalent optics in your camera bag, saving space and money whilst offering the convenience of a zoom lens.

In the past, Sigma have carved a niche for themselves creating new, exciting optics that don't already exist in manufacturer's own lens line-ups, such as their 15-30mm & 12-24mm lenses for full frame cameras, that were the first of their kind.

Practical Photography

Credit must be given to Sigma for taking the plunge and being the first to pull off this optical feat. Despite being a touch heavy – especially for a lens intended for smaller APS-C format D-SLRs – the 18-35mm impressed us in almost all areas of testing.

Sigma’s website suggests this lens is suitable for a wide variety of situations, including travel, portraiture, wedding and events and general family photography. We’d add reportage and photojournalism to that list.

DP Review

The Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM is an extraordinary lens, offering prime-level image quality in the fastest zoom ever made for SLRs. Its 28-50mm equivalent range is a little limiting though, and inconsistent autofocus means that it can be difficult to make the most of the excellent optics when...

Ever since the industry-shattering announcement of the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 HSM "Art," we couldn't wait to get our hands on a copy. Month after month of delays and pushed back release dates it finally arrived, and what an exciting time it was.

For me it focusses very well on all focus points on my Nikon D500 and D7500. No focus issues at all.

Thought about this lens for a very long time, put off by the internet chatter about focus issues. Finally bought it and very happy with it. You absolutely do need the dock and you do need to spend the time setting it up correctly. It was a little out of focus on my nikon 7100 to start with.

UK Digital

This is a fantastic wide-angle zoom lens for cropped sensor cameras. It is fantastic for low light photography, and has superb image quality throughout its zoom range even at f1.8. The zoom is smooth, has quick autofocus. The price is very good for a lens of this quality.

I bought this recently and what a great buy it was! I do low light shots at music venues and needed a good, reliable wide angle zoom that could do it. This lens is now my main kit for gig photography. It's great in low light and very sharp.

Clifton Cameras

I used it for salsa dancing events and Boxing and was impressed with the result. Downside it can't be used on Full Frame Camera :( like Nixon D850

I bought this lens for my A77 and was very disappointed 'cause the AF was very unreliable, OK for people, but horrible for landscape. Tried to fix it with the Sigma docking station, but that only works if you have a clear front- or back-focus on the lens and you don't have the possibility to correct...

Wex Photo Video

Incredibly sharp lens, with the one caveat that it does require micro adjustment. I found that out of the box it forward focussed fairly consistently and was disappointing until I applied micro adjustment in my camera (Canon EOS 7D) after which it was very sharp (much better than the Canon 17-85 IS...

The more I use this lens the more I love it. Always my go to lens for any wide angle shot and any close up, I rather have a top notch photo to crop than an "It'll do" photo that requires no cropping. Even at its widest it pin sharp, it's sweet spot is all through its range.

This is just a brilliant lens. Very sharp even at f1.8. Perfect for my 7D, 60D and BMPCC.
