Superior G Lens rendering

State-of-the-art optics in a compact, lightweight lens with constant F4 maximum aperture offer the appealing, expressive image quality that the G Lens lineup is famous for. G Lenses are manufactured to exacting tolerances and individually tested to ensure that each and every unit meets the same high standards of image quality and creative control.

Optimum sharpness and bokeh in one lens

Precision AA (advanced aspherical) elements, super ED glass, and the Nano AR coating work together in an advanced optical design to deliver high resolution throughout the entire image at all focal lengths. A 9-blade circular aperture extends the lens’s expressive capabilities by contributing to gorgeous background bokeh with natural highlights.

Lightweight mobility and smooth control

This compact, lightweight full-frame E-mount zoom lens maximizes mobility as well as balance with α7 series bodies. Internal focusing is an advantage too, maintaining constant lens length for better all-around handling. All controls, including focus hold and focus range limiter switches, have been designed for intuitive operation so the user can concentrate on the image.1

Always sharp and clear

Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization compensates for camera shake that can blur images when shooting handheld. Sharp, clear telephoto shots are easier to achieve, and indoor shots in dim lighting can be captured without the need to boost ISO sensitivity and risk increased noise.

Panning modes

The first image stabilization mode switch in an α lens provides a “panning mode” that allows Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to remain active while panning. This makes it possible to capture dynamic horizontally panned shots while effectively minimizing shake induced blur in other axes.

Constant f4 maximum aperture

A constant F4 aperture across the entire 70–200mm range means you can zoom and reframe as necessary without having to think about changing exposure settings.

Dual Linear Motors

Focusing is fast and precise thanks to Dual Linear Motors. The quiet and fluid movement is perfect for shooting movies, fast-paced action, or whenever focus is being changed quickly and often. The use of an internal focusing group, rather than a moving front lens element, makes for a compact design that works well with accessories like lens hoods and polarising filters.

Nano AR Coating

This lens coating has been designed to accurately transmit light while reducing the negative effects of glare, reflection and ghosting. This creates shots with enhanced contrast, clarity and overall image quality.

9-blade circular aperture

The unique 9-blade circular design lets the aperture remain almost perfectly circular even when stopped down by two stops. This makes it possible to achieve smoother, more natural defocusing in your images – including artistic blurring or 'bokeh' – and greater control over the depth of field.

Reliable and easy in any conditions

Reliable operation in a variety of conditions is ensured by a design that prevents dust and moisture from entering the lens.

The key specification of this lens is that Sony has opted for a maximum aperture of f/4 rather than f/2.8. While a few photographers may be ready to dismiss the lens purely on these grounds, the reason for this choice is quite obvious.

Overall image quality isn't quite as good as from most competing lenses on test, which is disappointing considering the price.

The Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS is an excellent telephoto zoom lens for Sony's full-frame compact system cameras. It delivers outstanding sharpness in the centre of the frame almost throughout its entire aperture and zoom range, even performing well wide-open at f/4, although you'll need to stop down...

The Digital Picture

The FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens fills an important niche in the Sony lens lineup. Looking for a professional-grade, high-performing Sony telephoto zoom lens that is able to be comfortably carried for long periods of time and doesn't cost a fortune? Look no further. This lens has your name on it.

What Digital Camera

At first I was a little concerned about the size of the Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS lens, worrying that it would dwarf the Alpha 7R. However, while it certainly is not the smallest of lenses, it pairs well with the Alpha 7 cameras, offering a good compromise between size, weight and portability.

The size of the lens is about the same as the Canon/Nikon competitors which is very compact for a 70-200 f/4 lens. Yes, maybe it's not a small lens but we are talking full frame here and I always prefer IQ over size. The Sony 70-200 f/4 is just as good or better than my Canon 70-200 f/4L IS which is...

Camera Labs

Sony's FE 70-200mm f4G OSS was the first telephoto zoom for its full-frame mirrorless cameras and remains one of the best options for fairly close range action. The f4 aperture may not deliver as much (or as attractive) blurring as the FE 70-200mm f2.8 GM, nor will its focal length reach as far as...

The Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS is, undoubtedly, a high quality with just a few weaknesses. The resolution is generally on a very high level except at 200mm @ f/4 where the corners are too soft. Lateral CAs are well corrected and help to keep a high sharpness perception.

Imaging Resource

Until recently , the FE 70-200mm was the longest focal length lens offered for Sony's relatively new full-frame mirrorless models. The Sony FE 70-200 ƒ/4 OSS offers a compact and comfortable shooting experience with a classic, versatile range of focal lengths.

Specification Every full frame system offers a 70-200mm (or thereabouts) lens, usually f/2.8. These are, however, quite large and heavy and one of the perceived advantages of the Sony Alpha 7 system is its compact nature.

For the first time I decided to buy this kind of zoom with F4.0, the widest aperture. As zooms go this is a quite a compact one. Quality of the images is exemplary, as long as you are happy to settle for slightly deeper depth of field.

Wex Photo Video

This lens is quite expensive but it is a case of you get what you pay for. The lens is of solid construction and silent in operation. However, the main advantage is super quick focussing and amazingly sharp images.

Purchased this lens over 1 1/2 years ago. The quality and standard of photograph is really excellent. What you get for the lens price for me represents very good value. For me as an avid landscape photographer the F4 aperture is perfect as it helps keep the lens light and I really don't need those...

The Sony 70-200mm f4 G OSS lens is ideal for everything from landscape to wildlife photography . Images are tack sharp & it is light enough to shoot hand held & carry around all day. The lens features Sony OSS stabilisation which combines with in camera OSS to greatly improve hand held images.

This lens is my go to telephoto lens to match with my a6400. The compact size and light weight keep my keep easy to transport and fairly discreet. The f4 aperture gives a nice bokeh for portraits and the sharpness is out of this world for the price of the lens.

Wex Photo Video

As one would expect this is not a light or small lens. I use it on an Alpha 6000 and am very pleased with the results. The images are very sharp, even at f4. The only possible criticism is that the bokeh isn't as smooth as it could be.

Clifton Cameras

While everything about this lens is to be liked - there is one particular problem that is pretty annoying. There is loads of purple fringing in high contrast areas. To go for a 2.8 is way out of my means, the reviews that I had read before making this selection is that you lose 1 stop of light...

Never bought a Sony g lens before wish I had.the photos are so crisp with this lens.also quite light for its size.very well made will def be investing in more g lenses in the future
