Exemplary G Master resolution and bokeh

A fitting addition to the G Master series, this lens combines extraordinary resolution and breathtakingly soft, smooth bokeh that ideally sets off the in-focus subject. The optical design, featuring an innovative optical apodization element and new 11-blade aperture, achieves consistently high performance throughout the image area.

Resolution true to the G Master name

With spherical aberration compensation, ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass, and aspherical elements, this lens boasts extreme resolution and sharpness that fulfil the demanding 50 lines per millimetre MTF requirement that is a basis for G Master optical design. That sharpness extends throughout the image area.

Outstanding clarity and contrast

Sony’s original Nano AR Coating suppresses spurious reflections that can cause flare and ghosting, particularly in backlit situations. The result is consistently high contrast and clarity with deep blacks in the widest possible range of photographic situations. (1. Nano AR Coating / 2.Glass / 3.Transmitted light)

STF™ delivers incomparable bokeh and sharpness

This 100mm mid-range telephoto prime lens is a superb creative tool that offers outstanding G Master resolution plus innovative STF (Smooth Trans Focus) optics for magnificent bokeh. It features fast, precise, quiet DDSSM autofocus, and close-up capability up to 0.25x magnification. Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation minimizes blur that can occur during low light or macro shooting.

Bokeh doesn’t get better than this

Specifically designed to produce extraordinarily smooth, natural bokeh, this lens features a unique optical apodization (APD) element, a newly designed 11-blade circular aperture, and minimal highlight distortion at the image periphery. Each lens is individually fine-tuned to ensure that the highest G Master standards are realized.

Apodization for unbeatable bokeh

An optical APD element is a special type of filter that exhibits gradually decreasing light transmission towards its periphery. It attenuates the edges of point images, resulting in exceptionally smooth, beautiful bokeh in both background and foreground areas with an absolute minimum of double-edge effects.

Beautiful peripheral highlights

In keeping with this lens’s emphasis on bokeh, it has been designed to minimize vignetting that can distort highlight geometry at the image periphery. Point light sources are reproduced with consistently circular bokeh throughout the image, so that sunlight filtering through or reflecting off leaves, for example, is rendered with serene elegance.

11 blades enhance bokeh beauty

Sony’s original circular aperture design has been improved with 11 blades for even greater circularity. Design and materials have been revised to ensure that an almost round aperture shape is maintained whether open or stopped down, and strict circularity standards are applied to ensure that the full beauty of STF bokeh is achieved without compromise.

Get close and explore the details

Because one of the main features of this lens is bokeh, it has been provided with a macro ring switch that extends the lens’s range into the macro-region where bokeh can be used to great effect. The macro mode provides 0.57m (1.87 ft.) minimum focus with 0.25x maximum magnification, with no compromise in resolution performance.

AF that lets you concentrate on creating

A DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focus drive system provides fast, precise, quiet autofocus. Fast, unobtrusive AF performance allows the user to concentrate fully on capturing superlative stills or movies. This lens supports both contrast AF and focal-plane phase-detection AF, making it an ideal match for modern high-performance Sony camera bodies.

Advanced actuators for speed and precision

DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) employs an original Sony piezoelectric motor to directly drive the focus ring. High braking precision means that the focus ring is precisely controlled for the highest possible focus accuracy. It’s quiet too, making it ideal for shooting wildlife as well as movies. Manual focus is also smooth and responsive.

Clear, blur-free images without a tripod

Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation is built-in, making it possible to achieve maximum subject sharpness with the slower shutter speeds. Image stabilisation in a 100mm mid-range telephoto lens is an advantage for professionals and amateurs alike. Second-generation α7 bodies additionally provide in-body 5-axis stabilisation.

Professional handling and control

Other advanced features that enhance operation for still photography and moviemaking include an aperture ring, switchable aperture ring click stops, a Focus Hold button, an AF/MF focus select switch, and a wide focus ring for sure, comfortable control.

High reliability in harsh conditions

In addition to a rubber seal ring at the mount, the overall design of this lens is dust and moisture resistant for extra protection and reliable operation in challenging environments. Shoot with confidence in light rain or windy conditions.

The Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS is an outstanding portrait lens for Sony full-frame compact system cameras, with the new unique optical apodization lens element producing some stunning bokeh effects.

PC Magazine

The Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS lens features an APD element to smooth out-of-focus highlights, and is certain to appeal to serious portrait photographers.

The Digital Picture

The Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS is a unique lens, primarily due to the optical apodization (APD) element. The APD element causing the physical f/2.8 aperture to transmit T5.6 takes this lens out of the competition for low light action photography applications.

Camera Decision

Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS is an Auto Focus (AF) Telephoto Prime lens with 35mm FF max sensor coverage and it is designed to be used with Sony E mount cameras. OpticalLimits

The Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS is certainly a controversial lens. In terms of sheer depth-of-field power and speed, it is a mediocre lens. However, the quality of the bokeh is second to none (also compared to STF offerings from other manufacturers).

Camera Jabber

As one of the company’s G Master lenses, the Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS is designed to produce the highest quality images possible on full-frame Sony E-mount cameras like the A7R II, A7 II and A7S II. However, it can also be used with APS-C format models like the Sony A6500.

Photodo

There are now a handful of STF (Smooth Transition Focus) lenses on the market, using Apodization filters in the optical formula to offer the possibility of sublimely smooth bokeh.

I have come to use the 100mm STF as the only long lens I carry alongside a wide angle when travelling. It works as a regular long lens but offers better creative possibilities. I was previously using the 90mm but it doesn't provide as nice bokeh as this one.

WEX

It's easy to overlook any modern prime that only starts off with a minimum light capability of f/5.6 or T5.6. That's where too many make a big mistake. You can always add light but you cannot add the STF with an apodization filter like only this lens provides.

Bokeh... Difficult one. If you want a lens to remove a background, look elsewhere. I was after a lens to do a better job where I can't remove the background, for example in group photos. Instead, the background is still present but is rendered in a more pleasing way.

WEX

I've had this lens for about 1.5 years... It is my go-to portrait lens, for gorgeous bokeh and sharp images. I will say that there is a learning curve, but once you get through that, it really shines!!

This lens has a unique combination of extreme sharpness and good, usable depth of field at the focal plane distance, yet produces extreme blur and dreamy bokeh as the distance between the subject and background increases, giving rise to a 3-D micro-contrast effect that no other lens will provide

I love the Bokeh from this lens if you shoot portraits and use lighting or shoot daylight this is the lens of the bokeh ninja. It has to be the most underrated lens to anyone not in the know. But those in the know don't want you to know just how good it is.

B&H Photo

I've had this lens for about a year now. I own 200+ lenses and this is the best. The apodizing element not only renders the smoothest bokeh of any commercially produced lens, but also helps in-focus sharpness, which is outstanding. There also is near zero vignetting.
