Fast constant F2.8 zoom

Sony’s first 16-55 mm (24-82.5 mm full-frame Equiv.) APS-C zoom with a constant F2.8 aperture is compact while offering performance befitting the G Lens series. A new optical design delivers excellent corner-to-corner resolution, and beautiful bokeh is available when needed. It is compact, lightweight, and ideal for a wide range of subjects.

Excellent G Lens resolution

Two AA (advanced aspherical) and two aspherical elements suppress aberration for outstanding corner-to-corner G Lens resolution, while three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements reduce colour bleeding to a minimum. You get sharp, clear detail and natural colour throughout the zoom range at any focusing distance.

Smooth, beautiful bokeh

Spherical aberration has a large effect on bokeh quality and is precisely controlled to deliver smooth, attractive bokeh in out-of-focus areas. A 9-blade circular aperture also contributes to this lens’s beautiful bokeh. Sharp in-focus detail contrasts with luscious background bokeh for deep, impressive imagery.

Crisp contrast

Sony’s original Nano AR Coating creates a precise, regular nanostructure on lens surfaces that does not interfere with light transmission while suppressing reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. Internal reflections are reduced to an absolute minimum, achieving outstanding clarity and contrast.

Compact, lightweight, and bright

Optimised mechanical and optical design achieves a weight of just 494 g (17.5 oz.) in a compact, constant F2.8 16-55 mm (24-82.5 mm full-frame Equiv.) zoom lens. This fine lens is ideal for everything from portraits to everyday snapshots, combining with compact E-mount bodies to form a highly mobile, manageable system for a wide range of photographic applications.

Fast, precise AF and tracking

The same type of Sony's advanced XD (eXtreme Dynamic) linear motor used in G Master series lenses is employed in this lens. The XD Linear Motor fully utilises the speed potential of the camera body, focusing on and tracking even fast-moving subjects with outstanding speed and precision.

Customisable focus hold button

A focus hold button on the lens barrel is conveniently positioned for easy focus hold control. The button can also be customised via a camera menu that allows the assignment of other functions, such as Right/Left Eye Select, as required.

Focus mode switch

A focus mode switch that allows instant switching between auto and manual focus modes can be a great advantage when shooting subjects or situations that require fine manual focus adjustment.

Linear Response MF

Sony’s Linear Response MF feature ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control feels immediate and precise.

Dust and moisture resistant

A dust and moisture resistant design2 provides the reliability needed for outdoor use in challenging conditions.

The Sony E 16-55mm F2.8 G is the company's first pro-grade zoom lens for its APS-C mirrorless system. It's been a long time coming, but proves to be worth the wait.

Camera Labs

The Sony E 16-55mm f2.8 is the unashamedly high-end general-purpose zoom the better Alpha cropped APSC bodies have been crying out for. I really enjoyed shooting with it on the A6600 - like other lenses of a similar specification, it delivers a useful general-purpose range from wide to short...

Camera Decision

This a great lens and really deserves the G Master rating. It is a great step up from the 16-70 Z lens. Works very well with A6500, auto focusing is outstanding and rely misses, great colours, good in low light and very satisfying to use.

I bought this lens to replace my three Sigma f1.4 primes and apart from the loss of two stops of exposure have not been disappointed. The lens has exceptional sharpness and contrast at all apertures and focal lengths and easily matches or exceeds the Sigma primes.

So far so good, nice sharpness in most conditions, really appreciate the constant f2.8 aperture. The starburst effect at high f stop is fantastic and the bokeh is nice and smooth.

Bought this Lens in March for the A6600 but it ended up as my everyday lens on my A7R4, quality is superb for an APSC crop on this camera and slightly better 4K in this mode

I bought this about 2 months ago and it is the go to lens for the a6600. It does an amazing job, very fast, great bokeh.

It is amazing. I loved it quality so good even low light

Very versatile all rounder lens, extremely sharp, good bokeh quality.

I'm a total beginner, and I Love this lens! It's incredibly versatile. It's crop, so a FF equivalent would be 24-85mm, which covers anything you could need. The f-stop is very low for a zoom, and competitive with prime lenses, especially with these modern Sony bodies which have great low light performance. Only if you're shooting at candle light would you need a faster lens. It's bulky, I'll give you that. And I'm sure once you learn more about lenses this one seems dull and ugly. But if you don't know yet, or just care about practicality: this one's great. No need to constantly swap.
