Having to change lenses as you shoot can slow you down and introduce unwanted changes in image quality. Whether you shoot stills or movies, the 18-105mm (full-frame equivalent = 27-157.5mm) zoom range and quality of this fine G Lens will be more than enough for most shooting situations, plus you have the added advantage of smooth power zoom.

Superb rendering at any focal length

An advanced optical design that incorporates two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and three aspherical elements offers enviable G Lens image quality throughout the zoom range. Excellent sharpness and contrast are maintained through the image area, supporting natural, true-to-life rendering that deftly captures even the subtlest visual nuances.

Zoom technology inherited from pro gear

Sony Handycam® technology has been implemented in the SELP18105G to ensure smooth, quiet zooming that is ideally suited to moviemaking. Focusing benefits from the same type of pro-level technology, providing smooth, quiet operation that is also responsive. The length of the lens remains constant while zooming or focusing.

Continuously variable zoom speed control

Fingertip control of zoom speed via the zoom lever on the lens barrel or the zoom ring makes it possible to zoom smoothly while maintaining a sure, steady grip on the camera. This can be a significant advantage for consistent, stable handling, especially when shooting movies.

Constant F4 maximum aperture

A constant F4 aperture across the entire 18–105mm range means you can zoom and reframe as necessary without having to think about changing exposure settings. Even at maximum telephoto zoom you can usually shoot without having to boost ISO sensitivity and potentially increase noise.

Beautiful G Lens bokeh

G Lenses are renowned for their beautifully smooth background bokeh. A 7-blade circular aperture design is part of the reason, enhancing smoothness and producing natural highlights. Smooth background defocusing can make the in-focus subject really stand out in images with almost three-dimensional depth.

Sharp and clear in any situation

Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization compensates for camera shake that can blur images when shooting handheld. Sharp, clear night scenes or indoor shots in dim lighting can be captured without the need to boost ISO sensitivity and risk increased noise.

The Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4G OSS is a versatile lens that's particularly well-suited to video work due to the broad focal range, quiet focusing and the power zoom function. It's too big and heavy for comfortable use on some of the smaller Sony camera bodies, though, like the A5100 that we tested it...

Camera Decision

Sony E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS is an Auto Focus (AF) Superzoom Zoom lens with APS-C / DX max sensor coverage and it is designed to be used with Sony E mount cameras. Lens Mount Sony E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS is compatible with cameras that have Sony E lens mount.

Imaging Resource

Adding power zoom to a lens seems like a good idea, especially to capture the interest of video-centric camera users; the problem here is that serious professionals currently using the FS100 and FS700 cameras don't have the benefit of in-camera distortion correction (hopefully this will be addressed...

This 6x zoom lens sports a constant maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the zoom range, a powered zoom system with two separate controls, internal focusing and zoom and optical stabilisation.

Great lens at a reasonable price. Distortion at both ends of the zoom corrected in camera - if it's a Sony. Auto focus takes about 2-3 seconds to find optimal sharpness - could be improved. If you can live withe the slow autofocus and have a Sony camera then it's a bargain.

Wex Photo Video

I've used this lens for both stills and video on my Sony A6500. The focal lengths covered allow you to crop in tight with bokeh even at the higher f4 aperture. For video it gives a high quality image throughout that is great for b-roll.

After reading and viewing it from the known photography mediums, I decided to get it to replace the kit lens and I am very happy so far with its performance.

Clifton Cameras

I bought this with my Sony A6000 camera as an addition to a Sony prime lens. I wanted a versatile zoom, that is sharp, easy to focus and not too large. You can use other third party lenses, but I wanted Sony's inbuilt stabilisation, which works so well.

Wex Photo Video

After looking around for a replacement lens for the Kit 55-210 I got with my NEX-5N I opted for the E18-105. I didn't need the length of the old kit lens (got a Sigma beast for that) but something more suitable for travelling with especially for landscape work.

I needed a lens with a good range from wide angle to portrait, with a decent f-stop - this lens will stay wide open (f4) throughout its zoom range, which is sweet!

Clifton Cameras

Bought this lens with an a6500 to replace an aging Nikon D7000. Lens build quality and optical quality are good. The electronic zoom is too slow for following moving subjects.

If you are a 'run & gun' shooter and you need good wide-angle/zoom lens for video don't think twice. Buy this one. excellent on gimbal.
