Extended 70-300mm range in an FE zoom

The first E-mount zoom to cover a 70mm to 300mm range is a versatile image-making tool that can handle a wide range of subjects, from portraits and scenery to sports and nature. On an APS-C the telephoto end of the range provides a 450mm equivalent focal length for serious super-telephoto photography.

High resolution at any focal length

Four aspherical elements and two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements work with Sony’s Nano AR Coating to ensure that all forms of optical aberration are effectively suppressed for superb corner-to-corner resolution. The same design also contributes to the beautiful background bokeh that is an important part of G Lens appeal.

Class-leading close-up performance

With a minimum focus distance of just 0.9-meter and a maximum magnification of 0.31x, this versatile zoom lens lets you get extra close to capture new details and perspectives that can add immeasurably to your creative capabilities. In one lens you have high-performance medium to super-telephoto zoom as well as telephoto macro capability.

Snappy, spot-on focus

The advanced actuator maximises autofocus speed and precision with the widest possible range of subjects and shooting situations. Focus operation is smooth and quiet too, making it an advantage for movies as well as stills.

Sharp, clear handheld captures

Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation minimises the effects of camera shake when shooting handheld, making it easier to capture crisp, clear images that realize the lens’s full potential. Optical Steadyshot is effective at all focal lengths, and significantly increases your opportunities for great shots even in low-light conditions.

Operation optimized for versatile control

Plenty of on-lens control is provided for versatile shooting in a wide range of situations. A focus-mode switch lets you select manual or autofocus on the fly, a focus-hold button can hold the focus point even during continuous AF operation, and a focus range limiter switch can be used to preset a focusing distance range for maximum AF speed.

The Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS makes a solid case for itself by offering a useful focal range incorporating the longest reach of any E-mount lens, and all in a relatively compact package.

The lens fills a real need in the Sony full frame E mount range. Handling is excellent, performance is very good throughout, albeit tailing off at the edges as we zoom in. However, it is rather pricey at the current level.

Sony’s FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS lens is a good performer regardless of which E-mount camera you fit it to.

PC Magazine

The Sony FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS is a solid telezoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras, but a narrow aperture limits use in dim light.

The Digital Picture

The Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS Lens is a right choice for those looking for a relatively long range of telephoto focal lengths in a compact package with a moderate price tag.

Honestly, the Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS disappointed us a little. You are buying such lenses primarily for its potential at the very long end of the range which is where the performance may not be bad but it certainly doesn't reflect the promises of a G-class lens nor its high price tag.

Photography Life

The Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS fills an important gap in Sony’s FE lineup as it offers a high-quality mainstream telephoto-zoom lens option at a relatively approachable price tag.

Mirror Lessons

The 70-300mmm G lens is the longest telephoto lens you can currently find for Sony APS-C and full-frame mirrorless cameras. This may not be the case for long, however, as Sony is committed to releasing more lenses for the E-mount system and rumors about a possible 100-400mm have already surfaced.

I bought this a few weeks ago and I'm glad I did, I'm using this lens with A7M2,optical quality is amazing also build quality is fantastic!Sony you didn't disappointed me again !

Great long zoom. Much lighter that the 70-200 despite been a bit slower. It does extend a lot but doen not creep when facing downwards. As with all mirrorless lenses make sure you use a blower to remove any dust particles when changing lenses.

This zoom lens for Sony full-frame alpha-mount cameras is a delight to use. The zoom range of 70-300 covers most telephoto needs. Size and weight are good for a lens with this coverage. The quality of the build is high and the quality of the images is excellent.

I have used this with an a7r2 and a7r4, and shoot mostly flowers, birds, and other wildlife, along with some portraits and landscapes, always hand held. When I get the focus right, I have been amazed at how sharp this lens can be, even centers at 300mm.

Perfect for my style and use. Sports and action, a little wildlife and landscapes. The lens is acceptably sharp at all focal lengths. It is fast focusing paired with my Sony A7III. Perfect for my needs at this time.

I bought this particularly for wildlife, with the benefit of the longer reach on the A6300. I have only used it hand held so far. I have found that I get very sharp images, I can move the camera with the subject and get sharp images with blurred background.

I have had this lens for a little over a year and enjoy it's almost my 1st choice in any scenario. I want to find out if I bought 300 mm or 400 mm lens which should I get and why one over what im using now.

I wanted a zoom lens for wildlife photography and this does not disappoint, brilliant lens especially on MF mode!

Wex Photo Video

Beyond question this is a seriously good lens - at the price it needs to be. It is the kind of lens you use with a camera on the back, rather than use the camera with a lens on the front!
