High corner-to-corner resolution

This compact, easy-to-handle lens offers fine prime lens performance with high corner-to-corner resolution. A precision optical design includes one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element to effectively minimise chromatic aberration, while spherical aberration is tightly controlled for high overall sharpness with smooth bokeh when required.

Beautiful bokeh enhances portraits

Spherical aberration is carefully optimised to achieve the best possible balance between resolution and smooth, natural bokeh that can provide a perfect backdrop for a wide range of subjects, while a 9-blade circular aperture contributes to beautiful bokeh highlights. 85mm is often a photographer’s first choice for people and portraits.

Mobile and manageable for active shooting

A compact, lightweight design that is ideally matched to the α7 series offers a great blend of portability and high image quality for portraits, events, and more. Even though the SEL85F18 features and advanced optical design add up to impressive overall performance, its 371-gram (13.1 oz.) weight makes it a great choice for active, on-the-go shooting.

Quiet, precise focus drive

A double linear motor actuator system directly drives the lens’s focus mechanism without noisy intervening gears, for precision positioning and quiet operation that are great for movies as well as stills.

Quality build, versatile features

A customisable focus hold button can be assigned to other functions such as Eye AF, for example, while a wide, responsive focus ring offers improved manual focus comfort and precision. A dust and moisture resistant design plus other refinements add up to outstanding quality and photographic versatility.

Reliable in challenging conditions

A sealed dust and moisture resistant design provides extra protection and ensures reliable operation in challenging environments. Shoot with confidence in light rain or windy conditions.

The Sony 85mm f/1.8 is a very competent, lightweight and affordable portrait prime lens for the Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. This compact optic delivers excellent sharpness in the centre of the frame almost throughout its aperture range, even performing well wide-open, although you'll need to...

LensTip.com

To sum up we are happy Sony added a good quality instrument to their line-up which is also within financial reach of amateurs and less affluent professionals. I think if you decide to buy it you will enjoy it very much.

Steve's Digicams

For only $600, the Sony FE 85mm F/1.8 offers you more than your money's worth. Not only does it deliver such excellent image quality with superb detail, dreamy bokeh and creamy backgrounds at the wide apertures, and natural skin tones and beautiful color rendering, which is what you want from a...

PC Magazine

The Sony FE 85mm F1.8 is an affordable lens in a focal length ideal for portraits. Images are crisp, with pleasing blurred backgrounds when shot at a wide aperture.

Camera Labs

The Sony FE 85mm f1.8 is the smallest, lightest and cheapest large aperture 85mm prime lens that autofocuses on Sony mirrorless bodies. It performs quite well and gives you the reach and distinct Bokeh of a 85mm f1.8 lens which is ideal for portrait and street shooters.

The Digital Picture

If you are on a tight budget but looking for a good portrait lens, look no further. The Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 Lens has your name on it.

OpticalLimits

Moderately fast (as opposed to insanely fast) 85mm or 100mm lenses are generally an easy choice unless something went terribly wrong during the design phase. Still, honours where honours are deserved - the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 is an epic lens.

Photodo

Sony introduces the FE 85mm f/1.8 lens, a lower cost option for the full frame FE series. This new lens is suitable for the A7 series of full frame mirrorless cameras, and of course can also be employed on the APS-C models, where it gives a “35mm format” equivalent of 127.5mm.

Camera Jabber

Sony recently launched its FE 85mm f/1.8 to much fanfare. Eager to test its performance vs the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8, The Camera Store sent two of its photographers to Thailand. On a trip to Sony’s Thai factory, The Camera Store took some time to shoot with both portrait lenses to see if the Zeiss...

Camera Jabber

As it’s not a G Master lens the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 may seem something of a ‘second fiddle’ to the Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS announced at the same time, but at a round a third of the cost it’s likely to be a more common purchase.

I've had this lens a few weeks and been really impressed with it. The lens is a nice weight and easy to use, I really like the af mf switch which I use alot and the programmable lens button which is great because you can change the button to work how you want it to.

WEX

This lens performs extremely well, and at this price I would recommend every photographer had their own copy of this lens. With everyone's aim of trying to get smaller and lighter, it doesn't fit that bill, but if you are looking for crisp sharp images, great for portrait, useful in mountain...

This is my first prime lens for my A7RII and I wish I'd bought it earlier. Have only used zooms on it previously, I really appreciate the small size and simplicity of use. Just point and shoot. The focal length is perfect for portrait and people photography and the results are stunning.

This lens is brilliant. Exceptionally sharp wide open, quick to focus, holds focus tracking on moving subjects well, and gives a beautifully smooth background with excellent subject-background separation.

Having used the Zeiss Batis 85mm extensively, I thought the Sony 85/1.8 would suffer in comparison, it did not! I think this is a great lens, superb value for money (don't tell Sony!) and if you don't need the 1.4 max aperture of the G Master, the best choice.

Finally after long research I've got my 1st lens and I couldn't be happier. Paired with Sony a7iii these two work amazingly together. Very sharp picture quality with aperture of f1.8-f22. 85mm is mostly recommended for portraits but this won't stop you from taking some amazing pictures.
