Product Details

The new Alpha 7C combines Sony’s full-frame image quality, advanced AF capabilities and versatile video shooting functions in a stunningly light and compact design. The new camera features a 24.2MP (approx. effective) 35mm full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS sensor and BIONZ X™ image processing engine, offering high sensitivity, outstanding resolution, 15-stop wide dynamic range and high-speed image data processing.

Measuring only 124.0mm x 71.1mm x 59.7mm (4.9 inches x 2.8 inches x 2.2 inches) and weighing just 509g (18oz), the Alpha 7C is a similar size and weight to an APS-C camera, weighing only 1% more than the Alpha 6600. The Alpha 7C achieves the world’s smallest and lightest compact body through an upgraded 5-axis in-body stabilisation system, upgraded shutter units and the utilisation of a monocoque construction which is often used in the bodies of cars and aircraft. Even in this compact body, the Alpha 7C offers a 5-step stabilisation effect that allows beautiful shots without the need for a tripod. Moreover, the high capacity NP-FZ100 battery provides enough power to capture an industry-leading 740 images when using the LCD monitor, or 680 images when using the viewfinder – making it perfect for long shoots.

Outstanding Full-frame Image Quality

Sony’s new Alpha 7C combines high resolution with low noise for excellent image quality at all sensitivities, offering the user stunning image quality for shooting everyday photography and movies such as nature, portraits, sports, street photography and more. Standard ISO extends up to 51,200 and is expandable to ISO 50-204,800 for low-light shots. The Alpha 7C also supports 16-bit processing and 14-bit RAW output for natural gradations.

Advanced Autofocus

Using AI-driven functions, the Alpha 7C’s Real-time Tracking maintains accurate focus automatically while the shutter button is half-pressed. In addition, “Tracking On + AF-On” now is assignable to a custom key and can now be activated at once while the AF-ON button is pressed. Moreover, the intended subject can be specified just by touching it on the monitor when “Touch Tracking” has been turned ON via the menu and is available for both stills and movies. The Alpha 7C’s AF functions also feature Real-time Eye AF for both humans and animals to achieve fast and accurate focus. When using Real-time Tracking (while “Face/Eye Priority in AF” is ON) with a human subject, the subject’s eye and face are detected and locked on in real-time with extremely high precision.

The Alpha 7C provides wide, fast, reliable AF that locks onto the intended subject instantly without losing focus, thanks to its 693-point focal-plane phase-detection AF system covering approximately 93% of the image area, with an additional 425 contrast-detection points to ensure reliable focus, even in busy environments.

The Alpha 7C also features continuous shooting at up to 10 fps with AF/AE (autoexposure) by using a newly developed shutter unit and refined image processing system. It is also possible to shoot continuously at up to 8 fps in live view mode, with minimal viewfinder/monitor display lag for easy, stable framing, even with intense subject motion. The Alpha 7C allows up to approximately 223 JPEG (Fine L) images, 115 compressed RAW images, or 45 uncompressed RAW images to be captured in one continuous burst, and achieves highly accurate and reliable AF precision in light down to EV-4. These features make it easier to capture fast-moving objects with absolute precision.

Expanded Video Capabilities

Full-frame full-pixel readout without the need for pixel binning makes it possible to capture more than twice the amount of data required for 4K video (QFHD: 3840 x 2160), which is then oversampled to produce high-quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. In addition, the Alpha 7C supports HDR (HLG) and S-Log/S-Gamut profiles, Slow & Quick motion, high-speed full HD recording at 120 fps and other advanced features for exceptional, high-quality video footage.

Furthermore, the Alpha 7C features Real-time Eye AF (human) for video shooting. The eye is automatically tracked with high precision and reliability so that the operator can concentrate on the content rather than focus operation. Users can also customise AF Transition Speed in seven settings, and AF Subject Shift Sensitivity in five settings, in their preferences. Touch Tracking functionality is also available for movie shooting.

The Alpha 7C features a side-opening vari-angle LCD monitor, making it easy to record selfies, overhead shots, ground-level shots or whatever the user requires. The MOVIE button has been placed to the top of the camera making it easier to operate while recording in selfie mode. Additionally, the Alpha 7C also captures sound in high quality to match that of the image capture and deliver harmonious high-quality video. A digital audio interface has been added to the camera’s Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe, allowing the ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone or XLR-K3M XLR Adaptor Kit to be connected to input digital audio signals directly to the MI shoe for a cleaner, clearer audio recordings. Like other MI shoe accessories, no cables or batteries are required, providing unrestrained freedom for Alpha system moviemaking. A headphone and a microphone jack are also provided to accurately monitor recorded sound, and metadata attached to movie footage shot vertically on the camera allows the footage after transfer to a smartphone to also be replayed and edited in portrait mode.

Designed for Reliable Operation

The Alpha 7C is designed with the user in mind. The touch panel LCD monitor is a large touch-sensitive 3.0 type with approximately 921K dots, providing optimal visibility even in bright outdoor conditions, and supporting touch operations. The Alpha 7C also features a high-quality view mode for finer, more natural detail in addition to a 2.35 mega dot (approx.) XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ EVF. The Alpha 7C offers functions that simplify operation during and after shooting, such as Fn button customisations and more. It is also dust and moisture resistant to support shooting needs in challenging environments.

To simplify workflow needs, Wi-Fi compatible wireless-communication functions allows images and movies to be directly transferred to a smartphone or tablet for convenient sharing, viewing or saving. In addition to the conventional 2.4GHz band, support for the 11ac standard allows transfer via 5GHz band(IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac) so that users can select that stable and high-speed transfer with low interference. A USB Type-C® connector that supports SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps (USB 3.2) is also provided, allowing fast transfer of images during PC remote shooting and power supply from external mobile batteries.

FE 28-60mm F4-5.6: The World’s Smallest and Lightest Full-frame Zoom Lens with High Image Quality

Optimal arrangement of the 3 aspherical lens elements effectively suppresses aberrations throughout the zoom range and realises high resolution from corner to corner. A minimum focus distance of 30cm (0.99 feet) (wide-angle) to 45cm (1.48 feet) (telephoto) delivers close-up capability, making it perfect for everyday use or vlogging with a gimbal or grip.

There is a wide range of full-frame mirrorless cameras to choose from, from Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Sigma, and from Sony as well. We're just not sure the Sony Alpha A7C is one we'd choose. However, the vari-angle screen may be of benefit for vloggers, and those interested in video use.

T3

Placing full-frame tech inside an APS-C-sized body shows off exactly what Sony is capable of. In terms of image quality and performance, the A7C matches the A7 III, but in terms of usability, it’s a bit of a damp squib.

Pocket Lint

Sony has leveraged the popularity of its A7 series, creating a full-frame camera that seems impossibly small in the A7C. There are lots of positives here in terms of build quality and performance, but it's lacking a little in areas like bitrate and frame rates when compared to the top tier cameras.

Sony’s compact-bodied full-frame mirrorless model is disappointingly flawed, says Andy Westlake

Full-frame goodness from a half-pint camera

PC Magazine

The Sony a7C is a slimmed down, full-frame camera built for travel, but its small size limits its versatility, and some aspects feel a little dated.

DP Review

The Sony a7C is gives up very little in the way of features in order to achieve its small size. Its image quality is very good and its AF is excellent, but its small viewfinder takes away from the experience a little.

Camera Decision

First introduced in September 2020 , Sony Alpha A7c is a 24.0MP Advanced Mirrorless camera with a Full frame (35.8 x 23.8 mm ) sized BSI-CMOS sensor, built-in Image Stabilization, weather sealed body, Fully articulated touch screen and Sony E lens mount.

SLR Lounge

The Sony A7C is an excellent camera that is almost perfectly suited for virtually every type of casual or serious photography, though it might not be the best choice for serious professional work.

Sony

i purchased this camera with kit lens shortly after release and continue to be impressed. This was an upgrade for me over my much loved RX100 model as I wanted to learn more about photographic techniques but still maintain a compact high quality setup.

The A7C is pretty much the smallest full-frame camera at the moment, especially when paired with a compact lens. Battery life is pretty good. Can record in 4k but only up to 30fps. The one issue I have with the camera is that the touch screen cannot be used to navigate the menus, it can only be used...

I am a hobbyist and the a7c is my first full frame camera. I bought it primarily for its compact size and high picture quality. The auto-focus function is swift and accurate. The kit lens has produced surprisingly sharp pics unlike other kit lens that I've used (and dismissed) in the past.

SRS Microsystems

I chose this camera for it's size and full frame sensor and I have not been disappointed. Still getting to know it after a couple of weeks but it takes really nice photos using the Sigma 45mm F2.8 that I bought at the same time.

Castle Cameras

Amazing little camera; I have a A7iii and wanted a second body for interviews. The eye tracking in video mode and the ability to stabilise sensor giro data in Catalist while keeping the same colour profiles makes it the perfect compliment.

Great quality photos produced from a lightweight camera and lens

Sony

I bought the Sony A7c for street photography because it is so small but has a full frame sensor. It has exceeded my expectation by a mile. The image quality is fantastic and the auto focus is outstanding. I am so impressed with this little camera that I am changing all my gear to Sony now.

Love this camera. Fast auto focus and the tracking is outstanding. However I'm unable to download the update. I have two IMac one is mid 2011 and the second is the newest Apple M1 and Sony doesn't support either of them this is so frustrating. If I didn't have this problem I would have given 5 star.

The Sony A7C is the best camera I have used for years. I am involved in photography since 1975 and have used a long list of top-level cameras (from Canon F1, A1 all the way to 5D and 1D) as well as several compacts (including Canon Powershots and G11). I chose the A7C for the following reasons: 1) It is full frame, meaning it gives a very high dynamic range and image quality. That it is 24Mpix, is positive, because it allows ample editing and improving framing by cropping, without seriously reducing the image resolution to unprintable/unusable levels. Starting from a full frame makes this better. 2) The lens that came with the camera is compact and offers a very usable zoom range. It allow me to go out filming without any additional lenses, in most of the times. 3) the rotating and tilting screen is a huge advantage for me. I was used to it from my G11 and would not live without it. People who have not used this kind of screen do not know whatthey are missing. The freedom it offers is amazing. Having said that, after I purchased and started using the A7C, I found out that the viewfinder itself, although a bit smaller than DSLRs and other mirrorless, is very useful and I have ended up using it almost 80% of the times. 4) it is very compact. In fact, it is almost same size and weight with APC compacts! After I bought it, now that I am using it, I like the customisable buttons and I have assigned my favourite functions to them. Image quality is in my opinion excellent. Features to allow control of exposure, focusing and framing are excellent. My only reservation and comment is that I would prefer a much easier way to transfer pictures to a computer/laptop. The FTP transfer is outdated and unecessarily complicated. Transfering images via bluetooth or wifi would be perfect. This is possible with smartphones, I see no reason this is not being possible with computers/laptops. I may be wrong here, there may be an easy way to transfer images to a computer but I have not found it yet and even this is an issue. Having said that, image transfer is automatic to my mac whenever I connect the camera with the USB cable, but a wirless transfer is still missing. I am also not happy with the bracketing steps pre-set to 1/3 of a stop and I have not found a way to change this. I may be wrong here, but if so, the User manual did not help. Finally, I found that the remote control program is for me rather useless. These reasons would reduce the rating to "Almost Excellent" or "Very Good". I have rated the camera as "excellent" because I though that "good" is not realy fair for it. To really be Excellent, it should allow me to transfer the excellent images to my laptop in a super simple wireless way. Maybe with a software upgrade soon? Other than that, I recommend this camera with no hessitation.

Portable full frame combination which is perfect for travel photography. I have small hands so the ergonomics are good. A front dial would improve the camera more. Excellent image quality, low light performance and auto focus. The kit lens is of very good quality and compact. Due to its size the focal range is narrower than most kit lenses. I’ve ordered the new Sony FE 40mm f2.5 G for street photography. I
