The Sony RX1R II delivers superb image quality in a neat, compact body. The electronic viewfinder is great, though the processing speed and battery life are poor and there's no optical image stabilization.

Great camera capabilities fit better than ever in your palm, with the compact RX1R II. Full-frame format compatibility and other state-of-the-art image sensor and processing innovations ensure breathtaking image quality. The bright fixed focal length lens embodies ZEISS® renowned optical integrity.
Higher-resolution full-frame CMOS sensor
The 35mm full-frame Exmor R™ CMOS sensor provides for 42.4-megapixel resolution, sensitivity up to ISO 102400, wide dynamic range and low noise. The back-illuminated structure expands circuitry scale of a new copper wiring layer for 3.5 times faster data readout. The enhancements allow the RX1R II to deliver readout of images, AF response and continuous shooting capability, all at high speed.
Large-aperture ZEISS® Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens
The premium-quality ZEISS® Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens with maximum F2 aperture features a proprietary AA (advanced aspherical) lens element and minimal lens unit movement that allow the lens barrel to be very light and compact. Lens and sensor imaging plane are calibrated to optimize resolution with clarity consistent throughout each image.
BIONZ X™ image processing engine upgraded
BIONZ X processes 42.4 megapixels13 of data from the 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor to reproduce fine realistic detail with noise reduced according to image area characteristics. This allows for fast, faithful depiction of nuanced light and texture. The fixed-lens design of the RX1R II also helps to optimize processing of image information for the lens and the sensor.
Optical variable low-pass filter
LPF effect settings16 take advantage of the sensor’s high 42.4-megapixel resolution to deliver the ultimate image quality for your needs. Choose among Off (to prioritize image resolution), Hi (to reduce moiré and colour artifacts) or Standard (to balance those priorities) settings to achieve image character you're aiming for. Low-pass filter bracketing lets you preview effects of various settings.
Speedy, accurate Fast Hybrid AF
399 focal plane phase-detection AF points and 25 contrast-detection AF points make Fast Hybrid AF extra-quick and accurate under all conditions. The system features extensive phase-detection coverage (45% of image area) and 30% faster AF, as well as high tracking performance that assures capability to capture decisive moments.
Full HD movie recording and XAVC S format
The RX1R II supports the XAVC S movie recording format, for capturing the quality of Full HD motion picture footage at frame rates of 60p (50p), 30p (25p) or 24p, and at a high bit rate of 50Mbps. This increases your capability to express your visions in truer images that contain finer details and minimal compression noise, moiré and jaggies.
XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ with retractable design
The retractable Tru-Finder features 0.74x magnification, an optical system of four glass lens elements including two moulded-glass aspherical lenses, corner-to-corner clarity, minimal distortion, anti-reflective ZEISS® T* Coating and brilliant reproduction of recording detail. The EVF can instantly, precisely preview how your settings will affect an image. A separate eyepiece cup is included.
Wi-Fi / NFC™ for fast, simple sharing
With Wi-Fi built into the RX1R II, you can easily transfer a photo or MP4 movie to your smartphone or tablet, then upload it to your favourite SNS (social networking site). NFC (Near Field Communication) even simplifies establishing connection between the camera and device when using a NFC-enabled smartphone or tablet.

Overkill for most, with a few flaws, but that doesn’t stop us wanting one – the RX1R II is a phenomenal luxury compact camera
Cameras like this which have a high price tag and limited functionality will naturally only appeal to a few photographers. The RX1R was aimed at a pretty small area of the market, and the same is true here of the Mark II version.
After a flurry of camera announcements from Sony towards the end of 2015 we were not expecting any big launches. However, as the year drew to a close Sony surprised us with the Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R II – a replacement for the RX1R.
Michael Topham gets hands on with Sony’s 42.4-million pixel full-frame compact camera and shares his first impressions
Sony’s latest ‘full-frame’ compact camera features a higher-resolution sensor, improved autofocusing, Wi-Fi with NFC, a pop-up EVF and a tilting monitor.
If I were in the market for a luxury compact, I would base my decision on what focal length better suits my photography. Sony’s sensor technology is well and truly ahead of the game, and the 42.4-million-pixel sensor inside the RX1R II is at the forefront of this.
The Sony Cyber-shot RX1R II is the world's smallest full-frame camera, featuring a 42MP sensor, fixed ZEISS 35mm F2 lens, pop-up electronic viewfinder and excellent autofocus system.
The Sony RX1R II is a high-end compact camera with an integral lens that features a full-frame sensor with a very high resolution of 42MP, comparable in some ways to a classic rangefinder camera or the Leica Q system.
First introduced in October 2015 , Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R II is a 42.0MP Large Sensor Compact camera with a Full frame (35.9 x 24 mm ) sized BSI-CMOS sensor, Tilting screen and 35 mm F2.0 lens. Sony replaced the older RX1R with this model.
Impressed by reviews, I sold 2 Panasonic cameras and lenses to purchase this one. I actually like a fixed focal length, and 35mm is my preferred choice. I am also an admirer of Zeiss optics. Image resolution is excellent.
Travelling light is important so Sony impressed me with what could be packed into a small, robust body. Full frame images are outstanding. The menu set is demanding but worth the effort to access such great customization and flexibility. As expected the quality of the sensor creates superb images.
I use only prime lenses and favour 35mm. The fact that I cannot change the lens on this small camera does not worry me. I found the slightly larger Leica Q (at 28mm) just too wide (though it is a great camera) and so bought the RX1R MkII. It is excellent.
I had an RX100 camera first and moving on to this RX1R II was really easy, all the controls and menus are in logical places. Don't listen to the reviews that say it is complicated, it isn't.
I bought this camera to go along side my A7R3 and haven't been disappointed, image quality is excellent, on par with my A7R3.
There are very few true downsides to the RX1RII. As a body it has the image quality and dynamic range of the A7RII with a similar autofocus system. For those who don't like the size it is true, I would prefer it was a bit bigger, but it's not really a problem and there are plenty of add on grips to...
Fantastic camera. It's the "One you take to the desert island" one. It's a great street shooter camera as it is a family portrait camera. I am fortunate to own and enjoy this piece of equipment.
This camera is woefully underpowered. I usually put the camera in my bag and keep it there during the week. I have now resorted to carrying at least one extra battery as the camera battery - with very light use (perhaps, 20 shots/week) - will not make it through the week.
Picture quality and handling are just perfect for me. Yes Sony has an odd menu but via customizing everything falls into place for me. The only real downer on this camera: The build in EVF Diopter-adjustment slider is just really bad and it seems somewhat impossible to get it into the correct...
The Good Superb bright f/2 lens, mated to a 42MP full frame BSI sensor, and an excellent AF system boasting 399 PDAF points. And for good measure, add a high resolution popup EVF, and a huge number of customisable buttons.
