Image quality, Compact, In-body image stabilization, Large buffer, Integrated flash

As an updated version of the A6300 , the Sony Alpha A6500 adds a number of new features, including 5-axis sensor-based in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), as well as a much larger buffer so you can shoot hundreds more continuous shots at 11fps.

Trusted Reviews

Not too long after the A6300 was announced, Sony sprung the A6500 on the world. Sporting many of the same specifications of the A6300, the new camera is designed to be a premium version of the model, intending to appeal to high-end enthusiasts and potentially even some pro photographers.

TechRadar UK

In-body image stabilization finally comes to the Sony APS-C flagship. Add bucketloads of buffer and a touchscreen, and the A6500 arguably surpasses Sony’s A7 Mark II.

Amateur Photographer

The Alpha 6500 offers a staggering dynamic range (13.7 EV at ISO 100). It’s possible to pull back detail from shadowed areas where you thought it was lost The A6500 is Sony’s latest flagship APS-C E-mount compact system camera and is essentially an enhanced version of the A6300 that provides a...

Pocket Lint

Yes it costs a fair chunk of change, but given its array of features, the A6500 is an outstanding all-rounder. Just make sure you buy a spare battery and charger if you're going to take the plunge.

Photography BLOG

The Sony A6500 is the best APS-C Sony camera yet, principally adding built-in 5-axis stabilization, a touch-enabled LCD screen and a redesigned menu interface to an already excellent camera, but we can't help feeling that the 8-month-old A6300 should probably have offered most of these features...

A cracking system cam for action photography, but stick with the A6300 if your budget is tight

Practical Photography

It weighs just 453g when the battery and card are inserted, yet crams in a DSLR-sized APS-C sensor. This is able to capture an extraordinary amount of detail with its maximum resolution of 24.2MP.

Sony has gone a long way towards addressing the issues many reviewers identified with the α6300. The deepening of the buffer memory will please sports shooters as well as bird and animal photographers as will the improvements to the stabilisation system.

DP Review

The Sony a6500 is an outstanding all-around camera. Image quality and 4K video quality are both exceptional and the camera's autofocus system also impresses. Well-suited for sports and action photography, the a6500 offers a deep buffer and burst speeds of both 8 and 11 fps with continuous autofocus.

I have been a user of Sony full frame cameras for 7 years. Early in the pandemic I had an opportunity to buy a Sony A6500. I was tempted by the idea of a lighter camera and lens as it appealed for when I am out walking all day taking photos. I was amazed by how good the results were.

Rate My Camera

Fantastic overall camera, quick and accurate autofocus, touch screen works well, and quality is up there. Low light performance is exceptional though I try to stay as low as possible on ISO to avoid noise. Camera is light but feels nice in hand and feels premium.

Upgraded from a5100 to a6500. Well worth the upgrade. Now have choice of viewfinder or screen. still love being able to focus by touching screen for focus point. Now I dont have to go through menus to get favourite adjustments - just click on 'c' or other buttons.

There is so much to love about the A6500. I bought it with the 18-135 lens and it's brilliant for almost all everyday situations, the size and weight are great (especially for hiking) , the auto focus in particular is super fast and accurate.

I have only had the camera a short time but am very pleased with the pictures that it has produced so far.The focusing system is very good and allows you to capture scenes that lesser cameras would have missed.Build quality is high, it feels like it will travel well which is important to me.

I brought this camera about a month ago, replacing my good old A6000. The A6500 is a huge improvement over the A6000. Lots of new features in the same form factor as old was the reason I was attracted to it and brought it after using my A6000 for nearly 2.5 years.

I've had this for 3 weeks. Main reason for purchase was to mount my vintage Canon fd lenses. The body stabilisation and contrast focus assist this.

My Sony camera a6500 is practically new haven’t used it for a year after buying it. After using for a short period of time it suddenly doesn’t want to read memory cards. I tried updating software but still nothing. Now I have to pay for repairs

I am very much an amateur photographer and bought this as I wanted to update from my 15 year old Canon digital SLR. Disappointed! The old Canon was simple to use - instruction were included whereas the Sony instructions are all online which takes times to register and download, two types of software...
