After comparing the length of the pros and cons lists you know our assessment must be rather positive. To be honest the flaws we managed to find are not essential if you use the lens as it is supposed to be used.

The first E-mount medium telephoto macro lens with built-in image stabilization delivers outstanding G Lens quality: stunning resolution at up to 1:1 magnification plus gorgeous background bokeh when required, even when shooting handheld. A floating focus mechanism ensures that consistently superior optical performance is achieved at all focusing distances.
Renowned G Lens background bokeh
Beautiful background bokeh is synonymous with the G Lens name, and it can really make the subject stand out. Individual calibration of each lens ensures optimum compensation for spherical aberration, resulting in smooth rendering of edges without a trace of ugly “nisen bokeh.” A nine-blade circular aperture also contributes to great-looking bokeh.
Image-wide clarity from macro to infinity
Macro lenses are often used over a wide range of focusing distances, so a floating focus mechanism has been implemented for optimum suppression of close-focus aberration. The floating system reduces the size of the lens while maintaining outstanding clarity throughout the image area, from infinity to the closest focusing distance.
The precise, quiet focus for stills and movies
Two focus groups in a floating focus configuration are driven by an innovative DDSSM (Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor) system for smooth, precise positioning of the relatively heavy lenses that make full-frame macro magnification possible. This system is remarkably quiet and is ideal for animal or insect photography as well as movies.
Sharp and clear without a tripod
Although a tripod is usually considered necessary for sharp macro photography, built-in OSS (Optical SteadyShot) image stabilization makes it possible to shoot sharp macro images handheld. The heavy stabilization lens is driven by a responsive linear motor for fast, precise stabilization.
Fast auto/manual focus switching
If you have to remove your eye from the viewfinder to switch between auto and manual focus you’re likely to lose the shot. With this lens, the focus ring, where your hand normally rests while shooting, simply slides back and forth to switch between manual and autofocus. A non-slip surface ensures reliable operation.
Focus lock where you need it most
Pressing the focus hold button conveniently located on the lens barrel instantly locks focus at the current setting and keeps it there until the button is released. The focus hold button can be used to lock focus even when shooting in the continuous AF mode.
Select your focus range for faster AF
The Focus Range Limiter selector can be set for near and/or far focusing, depending on the subject, limiting the focusing range and thereby maximizing autofocus speed. Selections are ∞ ~ 0.5 meters for distant focusing, 0.5 ~ 0.28 meters for close focusing, and FULL for full-range focusing.
The inner focus for better handling
In an inner focus design, only internal lens elements move when focusing so the total length of the lens does not change. In addition to making handing easier, that means faster autofocus and shorter minimum focusing distance. The filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is an advantage when using a polarizing filter.
Get close while keeping your distance
The medium telephoto focal length of this lens gives it an ideal working distance at macro magnifications, making it easier to capture impressive macro images of insects and other subjects that cannot be approached too closely.
Great for movies as well as stills
Lens requirements for moviemaking are more demanding than for stills in some ways. Sony goes the extra mile to ensure that lenses that will be used with movie-capable cameras will deliver the necessary performance. Minimal focus breathing and quiet operation, for example, are essential for movie shooting.
Reliable and easy in any conditions
Reliable operation in a variety of conditions is ensured by a design that prevents dust and moisture from entering the lens.
The Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS is an excellent macro lens for the Sony full-frame compact system cameras. It delivers outstanding sharpness in the centre of the frame almost throughout its aperture range, even performing well wide-open at f/2.8, although you'll need to stop down to f/5.6 to get...
The 90-105mm focal length is a sweet spot for macro photographers. It offers a good working distance between the subject and the end of the lens, and has a narrow enough field of view so that backgrounds can be fairly concentrated and blown nicely out of focus.
It’s the first dedicated macro lens for Sony’s full- frame E-mount cameras, but just how good is the new Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS lens? Richard Sibley has a closer look.
As I said in the beginning of this review, the FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens is a great choice for Sony kits and that I promised to tell you why. Basically, the "Why" is that this is a reasonably-sized, nicely-built, high-performing lens that is relatively affordable, is great fun to use and...
If you're looking for a 1:1 macro lens for your Sony Alpha mirrorless system, look no further than the FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS.
There have been some impressive lenses for the Sony Alpha 7 cameras, and the emphasis seems to be on quality rather than affordability. It is vital that the lenses match the capabilities of the 36.4-million-pixel Alpha 7R, and the new 90mm f/2.8 macro lens certainly does this – and more.
The Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 G OSS macro performed great on the Sony A7R II already so it doesn't come as a surprise that it is even a bit better on an 24mp APS-C camera. In terms of sharpness the Sony lens is already impressive at f/2.8 and tack sharp across the image frame in the f/4-f/8 range .
We would be very hard pressed to find a poor macro lens as the general standard is very high across all marques. The 100mm macro is a particularly popular choice, doubling up as a useful portrait lens as well as other short telephoto applications.
It's a pricey lens, but right now it's the only E-mount option that works out-of-the-box for macro photography. It might be expensive, but you get an exceptionally sharp lens with some great features - certainly, worth the investment.
Coming over from Canon I was looking to replace my 100mm macro which I thought would be a difficult task. Oh no! The Sony 90mm blows all competition out of the water. It's so so sharp, beautifully made and just a must have lens if your a Sony shooter. This is more than just a macro lens.
I bought this lens at the beginning of the summer with close-ups of plants and use on my copy stand. ninety milometers is a little long for the close up stand but this lens is pin-sharp and proved excellent for flowers and portraiture both formal and informal. It is a joy to use.
Great lens have got a lot to learn about macro photography and come to think of it photography:) but very pleased I purchased this lens. The quality of the images are amazing when i manage to get a focus on the subject. You will not regret getting this great lens.
Rented for one week. Sharpness and colors are amazing but the lens is too heavy for me and I thought manual focusing was a brain teaser.
I have wanted to buy this lens for a while, not least following the glowing reviews. The sharpness and clarity is exceptional and the overall build quality is excellent. I also love the click back autofocus ring. Cannot recommend it enough for macro photography or portraits.
Relatively new to photography and currently using the a6000 as my start-up camera. This macro G lens was a highly-recommended lens from the LondonCameraExchange guys in Nottingham when I was contemplating whether to go down the telephoto or macro photography route.
Not too heavy, has a quality feel. good auto focus on the A7RIV. Took a couple of quick shots shown below all hand held. Only just received lens. jpegs straight from the camera
I wanted a lens that I could use for portrait work as well as macro and this lens ticked both boxes. I like the way you can engage manual focus by pulling back the focus ring
This has been one lens I have wanted for years. It is one of the earlier Sony FE mount lenses, and some of these were not always the best quality (eg Zeiss 24-70) but this particular lens has always had a stellar reputation. And now I have the lens, I can agree with all other previous reviews. This lens in incredibly sharp. I have only used it a macro lens so far (as opposed to a portrait lens which it is also great at being) and the sharpness and bokeh are lovely. The inbuilt stabilisation is also great and the macro manual clutch.
