Nikon's fastest ultra-wide-angle lens yet.

With the ultra-wide view of a 20mm lens, you're free to capture expansive landscapes and architecture, wedding parties, an entire band on stage, crowd shots and much more. Add low-light capabilities to that view, and the shooting possibilities are nearly endless. Introducing the AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED, a compact, lightweight FX-format lens that combines the ultra-wide perspective of a 20mm focal length, the low-light capabilities and shallow depth of field of an f/1.8 maximum aperture and the superb optical characteristics of an advanced NIKKOR prime lens. Whether you shoot stills, HD video, time lapse sequences or star trail images on an FX- or DX-format D-SLR, the AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED will widen your creative potential.

Dramatic ultra-wide-angle perspective

The AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED delivers a 20mm, 94° angle of view  (30mm, 70° equivalent on DX-format cameras) that's ideal for stills or motion capture. With its 7.8-inch close focus capability, you can work in tight spaces or get close to your subject to accentuate your focal point. From a distance, the AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED lets you get wide, expansive vistas into the frame. Videographers will love using their Nikon D-SLR and this compact, lightweight lens for establishing shots, first-person point-of-view sequences and B-Roll footage.

Brilliant low-light performance and beautifully blurred backgrounds

At its maximum aperture setting of f/1.8, the AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED produces beautifully blurred backgrounds in your photos and HD videos and lets you shoot at lower ISO settings to retain high image quality. In low light situations, opening the aperture to f/1.8 will also increase shutter speed to prevent camera shake and motion blur.

Versatile, exceptional performance

The AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED is designed to draw peak performance from high-resolution Nikon D-SLRs in both still and HD video applications. Aspherical (AS) lens elements and Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements with Nano Crystal Coat (N) combat sagittal flare and chromatic aberration for superb, sharp rendering across the entire frame. Nikon's innovative Silent Wave Motor (SWM) uses ultrasonic waves for fast, accurate near quiet autofocusing as close as 7.8-inches (0.2 meters) from your subject.

The wide-angle addition to Nikon's f/1.8 FX-format prime lens collection

Nikon's family of fast FX-format prime lenses now covers just about any shooting situation or creative need. The AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED joins the 28mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm versions, giving photographers and videographers a versatile collection of focal lengths with remarkably consistent optical performance and exposure control. Switch between lenses without missing a beat.

  • AS:   AS stands for Aspherical lens elements. This type of lens utilizes non-spherical surfaces on either one or both sides of the glass in order to eliminate certain types of lens aberration.
  • ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass:   An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
  • Nano Crystal Coat:  An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon that virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths. Nano Crystal Coat solves ghost effects caused by red light and effectively reduces ghost and flare caused by light entering the lens diagonally.
  • Rear Focusing System:  A system in which only the rear lens group moves during focusing, thus eliminating changes in the physical length of the lens during focusing and enabling faster focusing. Such lenses are designated with RF on the lens barrel.
  • Silent Wave Motor:  AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM). This technology converts “traveling waves” into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet.

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED is a high-quality, compact and relatively affordable wide-angle lens for full-frame Nikon DSLR users, although it lacks any form of weather-sealing and optical image stabilisation.

LensTip.com

The tested Nikkor can by only compared to the Sigma 20 mm f/1.8 EX DG Aspherical RF, a lens which could be called good over 10 years ago; currently our demands are noticeably higher and the performance of the Nikkor is the proof.

ePHOTOzine

This new lens from Nikon is a nice upgrade to the previous 20mm f/2.8D, which has a design that dates back to the early nineties. The fast f/1.8 aperture is great for low light shooting, and even though sharpness may not be of the same level as Nikon's top lenses at maximum aperture, it is still...

Amateur Photographer

With an f/1.8 aperture, the Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED matches the current class leader. Richard Sibley pairs the new wideangle lens with a Nikon D750

PC Magazine

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED is an affordable lens for wide-angle lovers, but you'll want to stop it down for the best image quality.

Photodo

This compact ultra wide angle lens from Nikon costs around £680 and sports a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture, silent, internal focusing with full time manual focus override and Nikon's Nano Crystal optical coating, to improve contrast while suppressing ghosting and flare.

I've just purchased four new lenses and this one was the one I was looking forward to the most. It hasn't let me down in my expectations! Even though it's very much lightweight, it has a good solid feel to it and the build quality is second to none.

A good lens, maybe not as good a choice as the Rokinon 24 for astro, but I haven\'t tried them side by side. As a general purpose wide angle, it is good. The auto focus is great in the daytime.

I have a set of F1.8 primes (85, 35, 20mm) and bought the 20mm to enable me to go a little wider than my 24-70mm lens would allow. The 20mm F1.8 takes the same filters as the 24-70 (77mm) which means I don't need another adapter for my Lee filter system and can easily swap between the 2 lenses.

Great lens. Almost perfect with no distortion. Rendering colours great. Shape just a shame it plastic like most modern lenses.

I use this lens for just about everything - travel, architecture, street and landscapes. It is lightweight but still offers superb image quality. I now use a set of lightweight primes in place of big 2.8 zooms with better results and less backache

Very light & sharp lens Was thinking to get 16-35, 18-35 or this lens. Im glad i got 20/1.8.

Really good lens... i like it... very light lens... good one..

Superb performance ultra wide. Straight from f1.8 it is nice and sharp on my D810 and maintains reasonable sharpness out into the borders. Stopped down past f2.8 it is pretty much perfect. At f8-11 the performance is even across the board and it produces nice crisp 14 point sun stars reminiscent of the older AI-s and AF-D lenses. Close up performance is remarkable. It can be used for unusual shots of flowers etc as the bokeh is surprisingly good. Flare can show up if the sun is in or nearly in the frame but it is generally minimal. Just the odd small spot or a slight arc of green in the worst case. AF is fast, silent and in my case, accurate with my D810 and F5. Build is good, but obviously not of the standards of the pro series nor the lenses of old. The advantage is very low weight. The disadvantage is a plastic filter thread. Take care not to cross-thread. It's a G lens so no aperture ring for using older film cameras.

Super sharp across FX frame, and well up to quality needed to marry with D810.
