When Fujifilm announced a smaller and lighter alternative to its XF 35mm f/1.4 R in the shape of the XF 35mm f/2 WR, everyone suspected it might be the first lens in a new series of primes. It didn’t take long for Fujifilm to announce its second example.

The XF23mmF2 is a compact, wide-angle lens that weighs just 180g and features fast AF for enjoying snapshots with ease. Weather and dust-resistant, it’s capable of operating at low temperatures.
The lens has a highly versatile focal length equivalent to 35mm (in the 35mm film format), covering a range of subjects from snapshots to landscapes and portraits. Its compact and lightweight design and high-speed AF capability allow users to enjoy taking snapshots spontaneously.
The XF23mmF2 R WR is a wide-angle lens with advanced image resolution, capable of drawing out the full performance of Fujifilm’s proprietary X-TRANS CMOS sensor. It has a similar size and design flair of the existing XF35mmF2 to make up a stylish collection of compact lenses. The inner-focus AF system uses a stepping motor to drive the focusing group of lens elements for silent and fast autofocus.
The metal exterior gives a sense of premium quality and robustness, and the aperture ring and focus ring have been designed for optimum operability. The lens is also weather and dust resistant and operates at temperatures as low as -10°C, making it an ideal choice for outdoor photography.
Advanced image quality
The lens consists of ten elements in six groups, including two aspherical elements. The optimum positioning of the aspherical elements ensures flatness of the image plane for edge-to-edge sharpness. The aspherical elements are used as part of the focusing group to minimise performance fluctuations between different focal distances.
Compact, lightweight and stylish design for great operability
The lens weighs just 180g. The metal exterior, modeled after the design of XF35mmF2 R WR, gives a sense of premium quality and robustness.
The compact and stylish form factor almost completely eliminates mechanical vignetting when using the optical viewfinder on the FUJIFILM X-Pro2 and X-Pro1 cameras. The aperture ring and focus ring have just the right amount of clicking and torque for great operability.
Fast and silent autofocus
The inner-focus AF system uses a stepping motor to drive lightweight focusing elements for silent and fast autofocus. When combined with the phase detection AF system of FUJIFILM X-Pro2, X-T2, the lens can focus in an astonishing 0.05 seconds.
Weather and dust resistant, capable of operating at temperatures as low as -10°C
The lens barrel is sealed to make it weather and dust resistant, and capable of operating at temperatures as low as -10°C. When mounted on the weather and dust-resistant mirrorless digital cameras FUJIFILM X-Pro2, X-T1 and X-T2, you can shoot in light rain or a dusty environment with peace of mind.
When it comes to image quality, the Fujifilm XF 50mm f/2 R WR lens is capable of delivering some beautiful images when paired with something like the Fuji X-Pro2. Sharpness is great throughout the aperture range, and you’re likely to be pleased with what it can deliver.
Fujifilm XF 50mm f/2 R WR, Verdict:
With a very even and impressive performance, weather resistance, great handling and high-quality finish it would be hard not to like this Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR lens. The Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR is an ideal standard lens for the range of Fujifilm cameras.
The Fujinon XF 23 mm f/1.4 R, tested here by us, must get a really positive assessment. Still the situation is hardly so rosy if you start comparing the price of that lens to the prices of its rivals.
The Fujifilm XF 35mm F2 R WR offers a classic standard focal length, fast maximum aperture and weather-proofing in a small, discrete package, making it well-suited to street, reportage and low-light photography in any conditions when paired with a similarly weather-proof body.
Sporting the same field of view as a 35mm lens does on a 35mm camera, this lens should be a popular choice for the wish list of many Fuji X-series camera owners, especially with that fast f/1.4 maximum aperture.
The Fujifilm XF 23mm F1.4 R offers a classic focal length and an ultra-fast aperture, making it well-suited to street and reportage photography. Optically it's also a great lens in its own right, with virtually nothing to complain about apart from the price.
Because it covers a ‘normal’ visual perspective and is relatively affordable for a medium format lens, the GF 63mm f/2.8 R WR is likely to be one of the first lenses chosen when photographers buy into Fujifilm’s medium format system.
The Fujifilm Fujinon XF 50mm F2 R WR lens is the third entry in the compact F2 prime series for the X mirrorless system and boasts excellent image quality.
While most people gush over the Fuji 35, I have to say, this is the real gem of the Fuji lineup as it is superior in every way, when compared to the Fuji 35. Overall, I love the rendering and the sharpness of the lens wide open, and the character is top notch for all the lenses that I’ve used.
This is a great go anywhere lens, extremely suitable for the weather in the UK at the moment due to it's weatherproofing. Compact, lightweight and quick to focus it gives me a 35mm (well 34.5 actually) equivalent view on my X-Pro3
This was the first lens I purchased for my X-Pro 2. The quality is outstanding and as a result I sold all of my other 'Pro' gear and fully invested in the Fuji family. The earlier f1.4 lens gets a lot of favourable reviews for its majic image quality, however with the f2 while you lose one stop of...
Perfect lens for street photography as well as landscape. 35mm in full frame, perfect for in-door shooting as it can catch enough space without distorting too much of the surrounding. Sharp at f/2 and weather resistant which is very important for a lens to travel with.
Agonised between this and the f1.4 and finally bought the f2. Had the f1.4 been a little less expensive and weather resistant I think I would have gone for that. Just that tiny bit sharper with better bokeh. Very similar rendering but I'm never quite there with these f2 series.
The Fuji 50mm f2 WR lens is compact and lightweight. Its perfect for street, and portrait photography, and gives effective focal length of 75mm. Image quality is superb, and renders nicely. with great character and smooth bokeh.
Optically l I am very pleased with the lens, but there are certain aspects to the functionality which, when compared with either the 18m or 27mm lenses (which I also have) I miss. First, with the other lenses I can switch the body to Manual Focus and the AF-L button functions, i.e. it autofocuses.
A joy to use which adds very little weight to the camera body. Pin sharp from f2 up and super fast autofocus though manual focus is also excellent. Colour rendition and contrast what one would expect from Fuji.
My purchase of the Fujifilm XT2 a couple of years ago - reinvigorated my photography to an enormous degree. I had become rather stale & predictable - but the retro kind of look of the XT2 - the beautiful array of dials - meant that the actual act of photographing suddenly felt very physical again.
Purchased this to pair up with my XS10 as a walk about lens. It's build is solid with a full metal body, only downside is the rather underwhelming lens hood, which is more like a plastic ring. Though in saying that, it is fully functional. This lens is super quick when using auto focus and very sharp to date regarding the middle of all images. If you are shooting at F2 through to F5.6, you will spot a little softness around the edges, but not overly noticeable and fully acceptable for the price of this fantastic prime. On a crop sensor this lens will equate to a 35mm, perfect for street, environmental portrait, landscape and general "walk about" photography. It's presence is very discreet, though not pancake and just feels right from the moment you fit it. Good solid aperture ring with satisfying clicks coupled with a smooth focus ring make this a joy to use. I will be getting the 35mm next (50mm equivalent), based purely on this little beauty. It's rarely off my camera!
