A must-have for standard portraits and everyday use, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G is a lens that will absolutely surprise you. The 50mm focal length (75mm equivalent on DX format cameras) with a fast f/1.8 aperture allows you to capture stunning images with a shallow depth-of-field, letting your subjects stand out from their backgrounds. The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G may soon become your new favourite lens.

Get astonishing low light results

This lightweight standard lens is a great travel companion because you never know when a beautiful, sunny day will turn cloudy and rainy. With its fast f/1.8 aperture, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G will capture even low-light situations with stunning brilliance.

Achieve more natural depth of field

Whether you're shooting portraits, food or nature—indoors or outdoors—the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings. And its 50mm focal length is perfect for creating natural perspective in your photographs.

Shoot pin-sharp portraits every time

Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior colour consistency and reduced flare, while the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G's Aspherical Lens Element (AS) virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberrations, even when shooting at the widest available aperture. Pair that with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, accurate and quiet autofocus, and you can be sure all of your portraits will be pin sharp.

Push your creativity to the limit

The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G is invaluable for shooting a wide variety of outdoor scenes. With the 50mm f/1.8 you can capture a scene as you perceive it with the naked eye.

Silent Wave Motor

AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM). This technology converts “traveling waves” into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet.

Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.

Aspherical Lens

A lens with a curved, non-spherical surface. Used to reduce aberrations and enable a more compact lens size. Aspherical lenses minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in correcting distortion in wide-angle lenses and help contribute to a lighter, more compact design by reducing the number of standard (spherical) elements necessary. Aspherical lens elements correct these distortions by continuously changing the refractive index from the centre of the lens.

Super Integrated Coating

Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.

Overall, 50mm primes are rather unglamorous lenses that can look out-dated in a world where zooms are truly dominant. In fact they are often high performers despite their low prices and are therefore worthy of very serious consideration. There is little to fault in Nikon’s latest G-series 50mm lens.

A fast 50mm lens should be in every DSLR shooter's camera bag, and the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G is an inexpensive standard prime that delivers very appealing image quality.

Considering the reputation of this lens' predecessor, it has a lot to live up to. The new more refined design is indeed very welcome, especially for those looking for a portrait lens for their entry-level DX format camera, who would have had to resort to manual focus if using the older D version.

The new Nikkor is a bit more expensive than its predecessor but still it remains a cheap lens, well within reach of most of photographers. Like its predecessor, it offers a lot for such a price.

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 is an excellent companion to any modern Nikon SLR camera, whether film or digital. Small, lightweight and affordable, it's also a winner in the optical department.

Camera Labs

Good points: Very high contrast over the DX image-circle from f1.8 on; excellent sharpness in the center even wide open; loCA is pretty well controlled; weather sealing; quiet, quick and reliable AF operation; reasonable price. Bad points: No image stabilization.

This new prime lens has a very affordable price. The WDC review of the Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8G discovers that its performance is impressive too

Imaging Resource

With so many choices in the 50mm category, even just from Nikon, it's hard to figure who the target audience for the 50mm ƒ/1.8G. Obviously, owners of consumer bodies such as the D3100 or D5100, which don't have mechanical autofocus screws, will gravitate to this lens.

This update to Nikon's venerable 50mm f/1.8G has a lot to live up to, as the reputation of the older D version that it is amongst Nikon's sharpest optics will be a hard task to live up to.

Excellent lens for the price. Super sharp photos. Shame it doesn’t have vibration reduction. Tripod needed unless you have very steady hands but otherwise a fantastic nifty fifty!

This lens is a very sharp prime that produces wonderful bokeh wide open. It is very light and comes in a fair price. The AF is slow especially in poor lighting conditions. I highly recommend this lens to anyone who loves this focal length.

I purchased this lens to take on holiday later in the year. After using a friend's I just had to buy one. A very very good lens for the money. Easy to use and takes some cracking pics.

I learnt photography in the olden days. Back then, the 'standard' lens was a fast 50 mm lens... it's what all cameras came with. Of course modern short zooms are the norm now, and their quality is very good, but they lack the wide aperture that prime lenses enjoy.I have an array of lenses, mostly...

Got this to pair with my D3200 as just started to get into portraits and my sigma 17-50mm wasn't as crispy in low light. Really happy with this. Can use in low light due to the F1.8. decent little lens to add to your collection that won't blow a lot of people's budgets.

Brilliant little lens. Have used this on both DX and FX bodies and it's super sharp results everytime. Great for low light as well with the F1.8 aperture. Can be found cheaper elsewhere but worth having in your bag.

Good lens for outdoors portraits.

I am still rather a novice at photography but wanted to advance with another lens for portraiture. This lens fits the bill and has been producing wonderful close ups of people. The results are sharp and exceptionally detailed and I am getting used to the absence of a zoom.

I've been doing photography for 3 years but only stepped up to a dslr a year ago, I thought it was time to buy a new lens as I am more demand for weddings but didn't want to break the bank too much. I have heard the 50mm works wonders and people are not wrong.

I've had this 50mm 1.8G lens a few months now and have used it a lot with my Nikon D5600. Whether it's out on the streets, in woodland and the countryside or doing indoor still life and macro (with an extension tube) the results have been fantastic. This lens goes everywhere with me. Excellent value for money.

I have to admit I really do like Nikon so it would be difficult to give anything but a positive critique of anything with their name on! This lens is just what I wanted the 50mm lens is something I've never really had on a Nikon camera but I am very please with it as it gives excellent quality pictures just what I needed.

Its one of the most ignored lenses in the whole line-up. Everyone seems obsessed with buying fast zooms etc but this is one of my most versatile lenses. You can pretty much shoot everything with it. The lens really shines at about f5.6 from a sharpness point of view but the whole point of a fast prime is when you push them at f1.8 and when you get the focus spot on this looks amazing. To put it simply, you can shoot environmental portraits in relatively messy surroundings and loose the distracting backgrounds, something f2.8 just cannot do at 50mm.
