Verdict: This is a fantastic lens that performs superbly, with unbeatable optical quality, smooth and quiet autofocus and an aperture range perfectly suited to portraiture. These factors combine to make it a real joy to use, but with quite a specific application, it may not find its way into...

The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G features Nikon's Internal Focus (IF) system providing fast and quiet AF and produces sharp and clear images at all apertures. Its fast maximum aperture is ideal for head and shoulder portraiture, weddings or concerts. When mounted on a DX-format D-SLR, the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G has an effective field of view of 127mm.
Get astonishing low light results
This medium telephoto portrait lens is great for use in the studio, on set or for shooting in available light; producing stills or HD video of people with attractive skin tones and beautiful background blur. With its fast f/1.8 aperture, the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G will capture even low-light situations with stunning brilliance.
IF Lens
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
Silent Wave Motor
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM). This technology converts “traveling waves” into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet.
M/A
Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.
Super Integrated Coating
Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.

Overall, Nikon’s 85mm f/1.8G prime is everything that any discerning buyer could want. The fact that Nikon includes a protective soft pouch with the lens is a very nice additional touch. All that is missing is a vibration control system.
You can sum up the review of this lens in two ways, according to that old adage: some people see the glass is half empty, others see it half full. The first group will notice that a 1.8/85 lens should differ from a 1.4/85 lens not only in aperture and price.
Optically, the AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G is excellent, which given its reasonable price tag is a very nice surprise. Sharpness is excellent in the centre from f2.8 to f/11, with f5.6-f/11 producing the sharpest results at the edges of the frame.
As an update to a lens design that has stood the test of time through at least a couple of decades, this new 85mm f/1.8 represents a good job on Nikon's part. Image sharpness is excellent where it is needed – in the centre at wide apertures and across the frame when stopped down – the build quality...
Very sharp at f/1.8. Small, light, cheap. AF is fast enough.Dollar for dollar and ounce for ounce, I don't think you can beat this for a portrait lens.
The affordable, versatile Rokinon 85mm F1.4 AS IF UMC lens isn't the best performer at f/1.4, but it shines when stopped down.
The Nikkor AF-S 85mm f/1.8 G is an excellent lens. It performs on a very high level in almost any regard, even on the high resolution DX sensor of the Nikon D7000. Sharpness is excellent in the image center straight from the largest aperture, the borders and corners deliver very good resolution wide...
The Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8G promises excellent performance at what is an extremely versatile prime focal length
Nikon has produced an excellent update to the long-lived 85mm ƒ/1.8D: while autofocus performance isn't quite as fast in the 85mm ƒ/1.8G, the majority of photographers using this lens probably won't be using it in applications that demand superfast focusing, anyway.
Great lens providing high quality pictures with little distortion or chromatic distortion. Images are crisp and finely detailed. Provides a smooth and soft bokeh that melds the background and softens background lights beautifully.

I bought this lens 1 month ago and i can see one of best portrait lens. I like the depth of the field and very good for close up. Recommended for amateur who wants to learn portrait photography.
Growing my lens collection and wanted something a little longer than my 50mm prime. Excellent picture quality for the price....currently using my old faithful D750.
Excellent clarity and very professional look and feel to the lens. For those people who regularly use prime lenses, they will love this. Having said that, I prefer zoom lenses to primes.
I am so happy with this lens for what I'm getting for the price. I don't even want to upgrade this lens albeit f/1.8 aperture. Even if sigma made an "art" 85 f/1.4 I don't think it will blow this affordable luxury lens out the water like the 35 mm and 50 mm from Nikon.
Have used this as my standard lens and it is wonderfully sharp and auto-focus responds immediately. Lovely for portraits as well
