Product Details

With its fast maximum aperture and rapid focusing system, the compact, high performance EF 50mm f/1.4 USM standard lens can be relied on for superb performance in any field of photography.

  • EF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/1.4 to f/22
  • One Aspherical Element
  • Two High Refractive Index Elements
  • Super Spectra Coating
  • Micro Ultrasonic Motor AF System
  • Rounded 8-Blade Diaphragm

Versatile, compact standard-lens design

Gaussian optics, combined with two high-refraction lens elements allow photographers working in all fields to capture crisp, clean images, even wide open at f/1.4. The lens is ideal for photographing landscapes and travel scenes as well as portraits and reportage.

Ultrasonic focusing

A ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.

Smooth background blur

A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.

Super Spectra coating

Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.

Verdict: 50mm is a very popular focal length for wide-aperture prime lenses, and this Canon ‘nifty fifty’ features a maximum f/1.4 for superb bokeh in out-of-focus areas, bringing your portraits to life.

LensTip.com

The Canon EF 1.4/50 USM is undoubtedly a well-done lens. The picture quality in the frame centre and at the edges is very good at apertures above f/2.0 – you can count it among the biggest assets of this device, apart from the solid workmanship.

TechRadar UK

What an excellent lens! The Canon 50mm f/1.4 provides super-sharp results in the centre of the frame at any aperture, even wide open. The edges are softer than the centre at f/1.4 and f/2, but by f/2.8 they've caught up, and from there on this lens delivers stunningly sharp results.

PhotoReview

Although not pin-sharp at its widest apertures, Canon’s EF 50mm f/1.4 USM remains a competent performer and its image quality between f/4 and f/8is excellent. Two issues should be considered when assessing this lens: the size of the sensor on that camera with which it will be mainly used and whether...

Digital Camera World

It’s a solid lens with a great history, but this one is badly in need of an update and a revamp. Autofocus accuracy is hit-or-miss, especially when using the lens wide open to its full shallow-depth-of-field potential. Sharpness is a little poor and there are some vignetting issues.

PC Magazine

The 50mm f/1.4 USM isn't Canon's top-of-the-line 50mm lens, but it is a solid performer.

DP Review

The Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM may be based upon a 37-year old optical design, but its performance in our studio tests clearly shows that it's not giving up yet. Sure the hairs are beginning to grey a little, and Sigma's new young pretender can outmuscle it comprehensively at wider apertures, but this...

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at Canon's mid-range 'nifty-fifty'. Standard lenses such as this are popular due to their lightweight and bright maximum aperture.

Canon

This lens, in short, is my favourite lens. It's sharp in the centre from f/1.6, it's overall the sharpest lens I own. It's an excellent focal length for a general use prime. It's compact and light. It fits nicely into a jacket pocket. The bokeh it produces is reasonably good.

WEX

This lens is an old design but still relevant because it can produce very pleasing images. Although it has technical imperfection such as field curvature and softness at lower f numbers, it rewards a little effort in learning to get the best from it.

Littlewoods

So much better than Canon EF 50mm 1.8 which is basically a piece of plastic. This lens mouth is made of steel. very easy to function and produces stunning images in low light too. Great price too and don't thing anyone needs the f1.2 most of the time so not worth paying loads more for it.

LensTip.com

I'am very disappointed about this lens. I shot it against a converted 40 years old Minolta 50mm f1.4 lens and the canon looses almost in every category (except auto focus ;-).

Cheap, small, good in low light. In another 10 years imporved sensor tech will allow f 3 or higher lenses to be used in low light, till then cheap fast lenses are MUST BUYS, well done Canon

WEX

Great little lens. I decided to upgrade to this from the 50mm ,1.8 which again for the price was an amazing lens - sharp and fast and extremely light but after five years of heavy use it was starting to become inconsistent with auto focus which brings me around to the 50mm 1.4.

Littlewoods

Great lens overall, decided to upgrade to full frame and purchased this prime to go with it, build quality of the lens is better than most people say, can be a bit slow to focus in auto so best to do it manually Overall it's a great piece of kit for your camera bag

LensTip.com

The performance at 1.4 is disappointing, but good from 1.8 onward. Not easy to recommend over the 50mm 1.8 unless you need the FTM focus, sturdier build or the better bokeh. Great value for a pro, though.
