Bought this unit used for $350 Canadian no tax...... current new price is $489 + tax so about $560 Canadian. I previously had the 2X Extender and was never impressed with the image quality vs just cropping a photo. Sharpness of the 1.4X seems better then the 2X.

The Canon EF 1.4x III Extender mounts between your Canon EOS Digital SLR and a compatible lens (primarily Canon L Series lenses), extending the focal length of the lens by a noticeable 1.4x.
Excellent for bird photography (in good light) in conjunction with 100-400mm IS ii. Not as sharp as the zoom on its own, and definitely not as sharp as a prime, but pretty impresive nevertheless. Seems expensive but much cheaper than buying a longer lens, and a huge weight saving.

This extender is great giving me nearly 600mm from my 400mm canon lens, actually 560mm, when used on my full frame camera, or 896mm when used on the Crop sensor, and a lot cheaper than buying the equivalent size lenses. Would recommend
Bought this for wildlife and with my 80D found it no problem to get a focus point quickly. Goes without saying you need good light for it to work it's magic and when you get that i see little if any downgrade in image quality.

I own the Mk II version and read reviews about how much better the Mk III version is. Well I used both - one on a Canon EF70-200 mm and one on a Canon EF100-400 mm lens. I did not notice any difference in image quality or speed of focusing.

I have only had the extender for a couple of weeks so I'm not really in a position to give a thorough review, however I have taken some photographs of dragonflies and the results are pretty good. I'm using the extender with my Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS ll USM lens on a 7D Mk 1. I've given the extender a provisional 4 star rating because I've experienced some focus hunting and as of yet I'm not sure if this is due to the extender, in such cases I have resorted to using manual focus. I'm certainly finding the extra bit of focal length very useful so plan to give the extender plenty of use this summer.
The extender gives me the extra reach when photographing wildlife without losing too much in image quality. On a tripod nothing s lost other than 2 stops.
