Fixed Flexibility

The AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR covers a NIKKOR exclusive zoom range of 24mm to 120mm, ideal for events and travel photography. The fixed f/4 aperture ensures consistent exposure settings across the zoom range; whatever the subject, from expansive landscapes to isolating portraits, the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR does it with ease.

Hold Still

The AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR is equipped with Nikon’s second generation Vibration Reduction system (VR II) that offers compensation for camera movement the equivalent to a shutter speed of approximately four stops faster and couples well with the f/4 fixed aperture under low light conditions. The system incorporates two modes: Normal for general handheld shooting and Active to compensate for the mechanical vibration frequencies caused by planes and moving vehicles.

Brilliant quality across the zoom range

The complex optical design uses Nano Crystal coat, two ED glass elements and no less than three aspherical lens elements to maintain bright, high contrast images under a wide variety of light conditions. Ghosting, flare and aberrations are minimised whilst the nine bladed diaphragm generates subtle bokeh effect in out of focus areas.

Smooth performer

The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) was specifically developed for the unique characteristics of this lens. It offers very discreet autofocus performance with instant Manual override possible in M/A mode. The zoom gearing and switch placement has been carefully designed for intuitive (blind) operation when looking through the viewfinder. The lens balances well with D-SLRs like the D700 and the barrel features a subtle indentation to assist grip when in use.

Built to move

The large zoom range is achieved in a very compact and tough construction, ideal for the adventure and travel photographer. Through extensive use of magnesium and Super Engineering Plastic components the lens is built to handle the knocks of everyday use, and rubber sealing around switches and lens mount mean moist or dusty conditions are not a problem.

The AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR takes the ‘standard zoom’ concept to another level to meet the demands of today’s high resolution FX format D-SLRs while maintaining excellent price/performance ratio.

The Nikkor AF-S 24–120 mm f/4G ED VR, despite several flaws, is a well-done lens for sure. I would sing the praises of it for several paragraphs if only the price was lower. Currently it costs about 1140 $ and it is really a significant amount of money.

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at how the new 24-120mm f/4G ED VR performs.

Camera Labs

The Nikon 24-120/4.0G VR delivers good overall performance, but unfortunately the FX-corners look like the lens has been designed with only a 12MP FX-sensor in mind: On a 36MP full-frame sensor you need to stop down to f8 to lift FX-corner performance to good levels.

Imaging Resource

Nikon's produced a nice kit lens for full-frame bodies, though it's not without its caveats. The lens fared quite well in our tests, for the most part - the big problem is the wide open performance at 70 and 85mm, where it's quite soft indeed when used at ƒ/4.

Photodo

Nikon's upgraded 24-120mm now has a constant f/4 aperture. Along with its 5x zoom range and vibration reduction, it should be a very interesting all-purpose lens.

This is a significant improvement on the previous version, so do check which model is being reviewed. This is a great 'walkabout' lens with a useful focal length range. It is pin sharp, with little vignetting or chromatic aberration, except when at wide open aperture.

I like the focal length and the sharpness. I will use this lens until it's updated! Still it lacks in regards mentioned. Such a useful focal range I keep a couple around and use them daily.

I own several Nikon lenses and this has to be rated as one of my favourites as it produces wide angle and medium telephoto shots at very high quality. Sure it's only f/4 and not 2.8 but it still produces great bokeh and the VRII is just brilliant.

I purchased this lens as part of a kit together with a D850. I have to say I was really happy with this lens having used it for a few days and was both confused and concerned when I started to read professional reviews about the 24-120 that were really disparaging and critical.

WEX

I'm a retired professional and rather than lug a bagful of primes around was looking for a general purpose zoom for family visits away from home. At first I was rather skeptical about the 24-120mm Nikkor as its predecessor had poor if not downright rotten reputation for image quality and distortion.

VR AF-S Nikkor 24-120 Lens. Superb service from Cameraworld, who contacted me to check I would be in on the day of delivery: the lens was delivered the next day after ordering - normal postage costs. You can not get better than that. The lens is heavy, but is did not take long to get used to the weight. The clarity of the photographs are excellent across all ranges and very little vignetting. I am very pleased with the operation of the lens, the focus movement and range is very smooth whether it is used in manual or auto. Overall I was very pleased with the supplier: thank you. As for the lens I can not find fault with: well done Nikon for producing such an excellent lens.
