Compact FX-format f/1.8 wide-angle prime lens

Bring a dramatic wide-angle perspective to your still and HD video shooting. The AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G's fast maximum aperture lets you create in nearly any light—dusk to dawn, indoors or out—and offers outstanding depth-of-field control. Nikon's exclusive Nano Crystal Coat nearly eliminates the ghosting and flare seen with some wide-angle lenses for improved clarity and contrast. Impressive on both FX- and DX-format cameras, the AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G excels with landscapes, architecture, group shots, travel and more.

Fast f/1.8 aperture with a 7-blade rounded diaphragm

An f/1.8 maximum aperture frees you to create in low-light settings, like the cool blues of dawn or the warm oranges of an indoor event. Not only will your photos and HD videos be brighter, your view through the camera will be brighter for fine-tuning and manual control. An f/1.8 aperture also gives you remarkable depth-of-field control, so you can softly blur your backgrounds and draw attention to your subjects. The AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G features a rounded 7-blade diaphragm to enhance that effect by giving a more natural appearance to out-of-focus elements.

Nikon technologies for unrivalled performance

A great lens draws peak performance from a camera, and the AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G is no exception. Impressive on both FX- and DX-format D-SLRs, it incorporates Nikon advancements for consistent, superlative performance, even in tough shooting situations. Nano Crystal (N) and Super Integrated (SIC) coatings enhance contrast and colour and nearly eliminate ghosting and flare, even in backlit scenes. The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) powers high-speed autofocusing that’s extremely accurate and quiet.

Silent Wave Motor

AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM). This technology converts “traveling waves” into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet.

AS

AS stands for Aspherical lens elements. This type of lens utilizes non-spherical surfaces on either one or both sides of the glass in order to eliminate certain types of lens aberration.

M/A

Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.

Super Integrated Coating

Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.

Nano Crystal Coat

An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon that virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths. Nano Crystal Coat solves ghost effects caused by red light and effectively reduces ghost and flare caused by light entering the lens diagonally.

Rear Focusing System

A system in which only the rear lens group moves during focusing, thus eliminating changes in the physical length of the lens during focusing and enabling faster focusing. Such lenses are designated with RF on the lens barrel.

Photography BLOG

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28mm f/1.8G is a capable but quite pricey prime lens that will appeal most to landscape and architecture shooters who routinely stop their lenses down or those photographers looking for lovely out-of-focus bokeh effects from a wider-angle perspective.

Trusted Reviews

Photographers who are working to a budget and who are considering the recently reviewed, full-frame, 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF VR at £430 may ask why anybody would spend another £100 on a single focal-length lens.

ePHOTOzine

Those looking for a wide angle prime lens with a fast maximum aperture, who find the price of the current crop of f/1.4 lenses prohibitive, may want to take a long hard look at this lens.

LensTip.com

It is fully understandable that full frame, professional 1.4/24, 1.4/28 or 1.4/35 lenses can cost as much as 5,000 – 7,000 PLN. In such constructions, fast and wide-angle, every producer tries to use the newest and optics, the best possible, closing it in a very solid casing made in Japan.

I bought this lens to replace the 24mm 2.8 nikon and I am very pleased I did. Although not quite as lightweight, it is still light and nicely balanced. It focusses quickly, is very sharp and has wonderful colour rendition. It is prefect for travel, street and landscapes.

WEX

This lens is no match for Nikons Pro range lenses. The build quality is decidedly light weight (which may be a good or bad feature, depending on the individual's requirements) but despite not being of Pro standard is nevertheless a very good lens at this price point and is way ahead of third party...

Camerasdirect

Wow. What a wonderful lens this is. This is one of Nikons best quality wide angle lenses designed for full frame but is equally good on a crop sensor Nikon DSLR. The sharpness from centre to edge is outstanding at all apertures up to F11 and as usual the build quality is fantastic.

Nikon

I'm seriously happy with this lens. It's a bit expensive but 100% worth it imo. The only negative thing I can say is that it's a bit slow to focus in low light, but I guess that's expected. But for sure it's a great lens and if I had to buy it again, I would.

B&H Photo

If you are thinking to buy or not this lens, I would say go for it. This 28mm lens is unbelievable sharp, fast and lightweight. Fits PERFECTLY on my D700 and D750. First I wanted to go for 24mm but for what I do 28mm is wide enough. Very happy whith it.

Imaging Resource

We all read pros/cons about this lens. You know about build, slack in focus ring, and price. I spent too much time with this lens and wish I could get it back. Despite monkeying with af adjustment I just could not get a sharp picture wide open on my D600.

Nikon

I love the feel, look and how quiet this lens is. Superb on the D800. Fast, accurate and images are sharp and beautiful in tone and contrast. I'm not a zoom lens type gal so this lens fits so many needs from landscape, to portraits...its just wonderful!

B&H Photo

Love this lens. I knew it would be good from the reviews I had read ahead of time, but I did not realize it would be this great! At f/1.8 it's so fast that image stabilization would only cause an unduly weight-burden. Thus, the lens is also super compact, light-weight, and very portable.

Imaging Resource

No complaints here. Sharp to very sharp throughout its aperture range. Corner and edge quality quite acceptable wide open. New 'G' lens construction is great, light and functional. Reviewers who complain about play in manual focusing are foolish, believing it is a flaw.

Nikon

The Nikon 28mm f/1.8 wide angle lens is compact, optically superb, and great for nighttime hand held photography. Below are two photos taken at night, hand held, at a shutter speed of 1/125 of a second, an aperture of f/1.8, ISOs of 450 and 3200, Auto White Balance, and Matrix Metering.
