The ultimate medium to super-telephoto zoom lens.

If you’re looking for a compact, versatile telephoto zoom lens that handles portraiture as well as it handles long-distance wildlife and action photography, look no further than the AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR. With the broadest focal length range in our super-telephoto zoom line-up, it reduces the number of lenses you need to carry into the field; and expands your handheld shooting capabilities, thanks to Nikon’s Vibration Reduction (VR) technology. Create spectacular photos and HD videos in nearly any light, from nearly any distance.

Remarkable versatility and performance

Travel light. Shoot with confidence. The AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR covers the broadest focal length range of any NIKKOR super-telephoto zoom lens. At 80mm, its an ideal medium-telephoto portrait lens. Create stunning portraits with a medium telephoto perspective and softly blurred backgrounds. At 400mm, its a powerful super-telephoto lens suited to wildlife and action photography. For dazzling close-ups with macro detail, get as close as 5.7 feet from your subject and zoom in to 400mm—you'll be amazed by the results!

Nikon's VR image stabilization with Tripod Auto Detect

At super-telephoto focal lengths, even the slightest camera movement can cause image blur. Fortunately, the AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR features Nikon's second-generation Vibration Reduction technology to ensure every handheld photo and HD video is razor-sharp. Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization provides 4 stops of blur free handheld shooting, assuring dramatically sharper still images and HD video capture.

Nikon innovations for consistently stunning images

Nikon's innovations in optical design and lens technology have given way to a remarkable new class of NIKKOR lenses. The AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is among them. From its Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for ultra-fast, ultra-quiet autofocusing to its Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements for maximum contrast and minimum lens flare and ghosting, you can expect a lifetime of consistent brilliant performance. The AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is equally at home on DX- or FX-format Nikon cameras.

ED (Extra low Dispersion) and Super ED Glass

ED Glass is an optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations. Super ED glass exhibits an even lower refractive index and lower light dispersion than ED glass, while excelling at eliminating secondary spectrum and correcting chromatic aberration.

Vibration Reduction

A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel.

Silent Wave Motor

AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM). This technology converts “traveling waves” into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet.

IF Lens

A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.

Nano Crystal Coat

An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon that virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths. Nano Crystal Coat solves ghost effects caused by red light and effectively reduces ghost and flare caused by light entering the lens diagonally.

Super Integrated Coating

Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.

A/M

A/M stands for Auto-Priority Manual Mode. This mode also enables an easy transition from autofocus to manual during AF operation. However, mode switch sensitivity has been altered to reduce the possibility of sudden unintentional switching to manual focus while shooting.

M/A

Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.

Overall this is a really impressive lens. Its only real drawbacks are its high mass and substantial price but these are also factors that arise directly from the amount of technology that is packed inside.

LensTip.com

Without any doubts the Nikkor AF-S 80–400 mm f/4.5–5.6G ED VR is optically a good lens with a very good autofocus and simply ensational image stabilization. It won’t provide such sharp images as those you can get from the Canon EF 100–400 mm f/4.5–5.6L IS II USM or the Sigma S 150–600 mm f/5–6.3 DG...

Photography BLOG

For a 5x zoom, the AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is an excellent performer. Centre sharpness is very good to excellent at all apertures throughout the zoom range, with the borders also being impressively sharp at most zoom settings.

ePHOTOzine

Nikon camera owners have been crying out for an update to the 80-400mm lens for an age, and now it's here it proves itself to be worth the wait. It delivers crisp images, focuses swiftly and is a pleasure to use.

Fredmiranda

After reading previous reviews giving it a 10, it was a great disappointment. Bad copy? Maybe, but I am not going to try another one to find out. Sent it back for a refund. My Nikon 200-500 was sharper and had better AF. My 300 f4 PF with a 1.4x TC on it is sharper and has better AF.

Photodo

Of all the lenses in Nikon's range, their 80-400mm offering has been long overdue an update for quite some time. The old lens had a reputation for being slow slow and clunky. Thankfully this new lens couldn't easily be labelled as either of these thanks to the inclusion of a silent wave autofocus...

Imaging Resource

Optically this lens is excellent, producing very sharp photos on both full-frame and sub-frame cameras even at wide-open apertures throughout the zoom range. Other image quality factors like chromatic aberration, distortion and vignetting were all well behaved and minimal.

After much thought I bought this lens to get extra reach and quality when shooting wildlife. It has not disappointed me. Great lens and well worth it. I picked mine up as a second hand lens from Wex and it works perfectly. Only downside is size and weight but I can live with that.

Just purchased this along with a D500 to use for bird/wildlife photography (Yes I know it's very expensive setup!). The results are just phenomenal though. Virtually every shot is sharp, with great contrast performance from this lens.

Much improved vs its predecessor For focal longer than 300mm, better lens on the market at lower price

Wex Photo Video

It's just a great lens - have been considering this purchase for some time and really glad I eventually decided to buy. It's expensive but you do get value for money. Great quality pics with excellent detail. It is rather heavy though and after several hours use you do feel the need to put it down!

Despite the Price and the dust it is a good lens

Wex Photo Video

I use this lens for birds, wildlife, and insects, for dragonflies and butterflies it is fantastic. Top image quality,I can use it wide open at 5.6 no problem at all, better than any previous telephoto I have owned. Used on dx and fx, it's an expensive purchase but you get what you pay for.

I use this lens, mainly handheld for wildlife photography I am only 8 stone and 5ft but find it comfortable to use on my D7100 and get beautiful sharp images. There is nothing that I don't like about this lens. My best purchase ever

LensTip.com

important lens , high quality and price . improved vs old 80-400

At first the lens felt bigger and heavier than expected but soon got used to the weight and the size. It appears to focus very quickly and pictures look sharp and so far happy with the performance.
