Anyone who tells you shooting a 400mm (or a 600mm) "plus extensions" is equal to the 800 FL ED simply doesn't know what they're talking about. Make no mistake, I love my 400 FL ED. When you can fill the frame, the image quality is astounding.

As the longest lens in the NIKKOR lineup, the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR delivers an astounding 800mm (1200mm equivalent on DX-format cameras) of super-telephoto reach with a fast f/5.6 maximum aperture in a rugged, well-balanced design. But for even greater reach, the lens includes a matched 1.25x teleconverter (TC 800-1.25E). This high-performance 1.25x teleconverter has an Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element for superior sharpness and colour correction, and it increases the lens' overall focal length to 1000mm (1500mm equivalent on DX-format cameras).

The AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is a marvel of NIKKOR optical design. The lens is comprised of 20 elements split into 13 lens groups. The front and second elements are fluorite (a lightweight mono-crystal optical material), which provides superior optical characteristics and reduced weight for balanced handling. Two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements provide superior sharpness and colour correction by minimizing chromatic aberration, and Nano Crystal Coat (N) reduces ghosting and lens flare throughout the visible spectrum.
Silent Wave Motor, Vibration Reduction and an electromagnetic diaphragm
The AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is an advanced lens for advanced D-SLRs. Autofocus is powered by Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which uses ultrasonic vibrations—instead of a gear system—for ultra-fast, ultra-quiet, ultra-precise focusing. It also allows you to seamlessly override the AF system with no time lag. Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization provides 4.5 stops of blur free handheld shooting, assuring dramatically sharper still images and HD video capture. Silent Wave Motor
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM). This technology converts “traveling waves” into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet.
Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
Nano Crystal Coat
An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon that virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths. Nano Crystal Coat uses ultrafine, nano-sized* crystal particles to eliminate reflections inside the lens throughout the spectrum of visible light waves (380 to 780 nm) in ways that far exceed the limits of conventional antireflection coating systems. Nano Crystal Coat not only solves ghost effects caused by red light, which was incredibly difficult for previous systems. It also effectively reduces ghost and flare effects caused by light entering the lens diagonally. The result: clearer images.

Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses.
Fluorite Lens Element
Fluorite (FL), a lightweight mono-crystal optical material, has excellent optical properties while reducing overall lens weight to improve balance and handling, especially useful in longer focal length lenses.
Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism
An electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism in the lens barrel provides highly accurate electronic diaphragm or aperture blade control when using auto exposure during continuous shooting. With conventional D/G type lenses, the diaphragm blades are operated by mechanical linkage levers.
Great lens -as every reviewer, only positives. I had it for only a couple of weeks and have been practicing with it. So far I have used it with both, D4s (for birds) and D800E (for moon and stationary items), for birding moon pictures, and some pictures of very distant items. Awesome pics.
After 35 years in the photo world in one capacity or another I have worked with some really sharp glass in all formats this lens is in the top five.
Working now as a photo guide I stay on top of new products after renting this for a rainy weekend it blew me away.
I have been wanting to upgrade my old AF-s 500 for some time. It was a tossup between the 600 and 800. Most of what I read and what I saw on uTube didn't really answer the question. But the one thing that stuck in my mind was the raves about the sharpness of the 800mm.
It's not as heavy as it looks, the AF is super fast, the bouquet is fantastic and the sharpness/clarity is mind-blowing! Yes - it is very expensive but when you make your living with photography it's probably worth it. I love it!
The Nikon 800mm Fluorite lens is terrific for bird photography. There is little difference in the image quality when used in conjunction with the dedicated teleconverter .
I purchased this 800mm lens together with Nikon D4s in June 2014 and have used the combo on several bird watching trips, mostly to bird hides on wetlands and one trip on a junk to a terns island. It proved worthy of its price and beyond.
I used the Nikon 800mm for Wildlife and sports photography. I have to say it is tack sharp around all corners. I got really great shots using it for the first time on Bald Eagles. Perfect match with my Nikon D4S.
This is one great lens. I have used it with a V2, D4, D300S and D800E. The images never fail to satisfy me.
