The Tamron 100-400mm F /4.5-6.3 Di VC USD (Model A035) is a highly portable, ultra-telephoto zoom lens with AF precision for shooting instantaneous movement with the utmost clarity. With this effectively positioned, extraordinary glass LD (Low Dispersion) lens, aberrations typical with many telephoto lenses are a thing of the past. Tamron’s proprietary eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) Coating suppresses reflections, yielding vivid images of amazing clarity. And thanks to a lens barrel made primarily of magnesium, the 100-400mm boasts the lightest weight in its class*, making it ideal for handheld shooting over long periods of time. With a MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 1.5m and a maximum image magnification ratio of 1:3.6, the 100-400mm lets you soften the foreground or background to dramatically emphasize your subject at close range. Moisture-Resistant Construction and a fluorine-coated front element provide additional protection when shooting outdoors.

Excellent AF performance meets enhanced VC

Precise AF tracking and VC (Vibration Compensation) are essential for ultra-telephoto lens performance. Thatʼs where Tamronʼs Dual MPU high-speed control system comes in. It features an MPU (micro-processing unit) with a built-in DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for superior signal processing, plus a separate MPU dedicated exclusively to vibration compensation. With enhanced AF response speed and VC, you can accurately shoot fast-moving subjects with stability and ease—even in low-light.

Precise, responsive AF performance

A built-in DSP (Digital Signal Processor) on the MPU delivers highspeed processing of digital signals, while ensuring excellent AF responsiveness. This improvement allows you to track subjects moving at high speeds, even more accurately. The AF drive system also uses a USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) motor for outstanding performance and fast, precise focusing.

Keep it steady with enhanced VC

Weʼve fine-tuned our original VC (Vibration Compensation) system with an enhanced control algorithm and an independent MPU dedicated to VC. Together, they meet a CIPA image stabilization performance level of 4 stops. While most ultra-telephoto lenses are prone to camera shake, the Model A035 delivers excellent stability for reliable, stress-free handheld shooting.

Better bokeh, Greater stability

With a minimum object distance of 1.5m (59 in) and a maximum image magnification of 1:3.6, the Model A035 can zoom in on a subject smoothly, resulting in close-up shooting with a soft, blurred effect.

High-speed Dual MPU (Micro-Processing Unit) control system delivers quick and highly responsive autofocus performance plus outstanding VC image stabilization

The Dual MPU system includes an MPU dedicated to vibration compensation processing, enhancing the computational capacity of the entire system. An MPU with built-in DSP (Digital Signal Processor) provides high-speed digital signal processing and achieves outstanding autofocus performance and vibration compensation, both indispensable for ultra-telephoto photography.

Superb image quality in an ultra-telephoto zoom lens

The Model A035 includes three LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements for optimal optical design and aberration correction. Lighter weight, increased light transmission and crisp images with excellent contrast are achieved by reducing the number of lens elements while ensuring an appropriate balance with aberration correction. The A035 has minimum object distance (MOD) of 1.5 m (59 in) and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.6 for close-up work.

Exclusive eBAND Coating reduces flare and ghosting

The new A035 features Tamron’s eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) Coating, which has an extremely low refractive index and fine multiple-layer coating technology, to achieve outstanding antireflection performance. BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating, with excellent antireflection characteristics, increases light transmission. These coating technologies greatly reduce the ghosting and flare that can occur when subjects are backlit.

Lightest weight, 1,115 g (39.3 oz) lens in the ultra-telephoto zoom lens class, and only 196.5 mm (7.7 in) long

Magnesium alloy is used in key areas of the lens barrel to improve weight reduction, strength and portability. Total length of 196.5 mm (Nikon mount) means a compact size for an ultra-telephoto zoom lens covering up to 400 mm, and the A035 can therefore be easily carried in a standard camera bag. Combined with excellent vibration compensation functions, the compact size enables successful handheld ultra-telephoto photography.

Optional accessory tripod mount is Arca-Swiss compatible

An Arca-Swiss style tripod mount is available as an optional accessory. Designed exclusively for Model A035, it provides quick and secure attachment to a tripod and greater stability. An easy-to-hold grip shape includes an expanded mounting plane, and the use of magnesium helps achieve lighter weight, thereby further facilitating handheld photography.

Compatible with tele converters and TAP-in Console

Model A035 is compatible with tele converters designed exclusively for Tamron lenses to achieve 1.4X and 2X the original focal length*. It’s also compatible with Tamron’s TAP-in Console (Model TAP-01), an optional accessory enabling users to update lens firmware and customize the lens settings, including adjustments of focusing positions for autofocusing and the operation modes for the lens’s Vibration Compensation system.

*Use of the 1.4× tele converter results in light reduction of 1 F stop; use of the 2× tele converter results in the loss of 2 F stops.

  • *1 Autofocus functions normally on any camera that offers F/8 autofocusing (see your camera’s instruction manual for your camera’s ability).
  • *2 Subjects with low contrast and/or luminosity values can sometimes result in out-of-focus images.

Moisture-Resistant construction and fluorine coating for enhanced weather protection

The surface of the front element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water- and oil-repellant qualities. The front surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, dust, moisture or oily fingerprints, allowing for much easier maintenance. Also, with active use of the A035 for outdoor photography likely, sealant is used in each of the movable and joining areas of the lens barrel to resist the intrusion of moisture.

Electromagnetic diaphragm system now used also for Nikon-mount lenses

An electromagnetic diaphragm system, which has been a standard feature for Canon-mount lenses, is now employed in Nikon-mount lenses*. More precise diaphragm and aperture control is possible because the diaphragm blades are driven and controlled by a built-in motor through electronic pulse signals.

  • * Available only with cameras compatible with the electromagnetic diaphragm (D5, D4s, D4, D3X, Df, D850,D810, D810A, D800, D800E, D750, D600, D610, D300S, D500, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100). (As of October, 2017; Tamron)

External design places importance on functionality and ease of use

While inheriting the design that makes use of many organic curves and the delicately polished form down to fine details that characterize the SP lens series, the new Model A035 comes with a highly sophisticated design that also places a lot of importance on the lens’s functionality and ease of use, featuring an overall form that faithfully encompasses the internal structures within, a slim Luminous Gold brand ring and the switch shape design.

The Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD is a telephoto zoom lens that’s available in Canon or Nikon mount. It’s fully compatible with both APS-C and full-frame DSLRs. Generally speaking, we expect long telephoto zooms to be large and cumbersome.

TechRadar UK

This first-edition 100-400mm performs well straight out of the blocks, packing real punch into a refreshingly lightweight build, and when it comes to outright image quality, the Tamron puts plenty of bigger, more expensive lenses in the shade. It’s a steal at the price.

Perhaps the number of small victories scored by the Sigma in different testing categories is higher than the number of the respective victories of the Tamron. The Sigma’s MTFs are slightly bigger, it corrects lateral chromatic aberration and astigmatism in a better way, and its image stabilization...

The Tamron 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD is an excellent alternative to the equivalent lenses from Canon (EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM) and Nikon (Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR), offering 90% of the performance at 50% of the price.

PhotoReview

The 100-400mm zoom range is ideal for sports and wildlife photography and the comparatively light weight of this lens and its 4-stop stabilisation make hand-held shooting possible, although a lens of this type usually fares better when tripod-mounted.

PC Magazine

The Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD is a light, affordable telezoom lens for full-frame SLRs, but image quality suffers toward the edge of the frame.

Shutterbug

Overall, the Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD lens was a pleasure to use. I did need to adjust my shooting habits to handle this large optic, and my camera/lens/tripod adapter combo was not light of weight or short in size, but once I got past that I found that it lent itself to exploring new...

The Digital Picture

The Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens adds a very interesting choice to the mid-to-long telephoto zoom lens options list. This lens (and its Sigma counterpart) delivers image quality close to that of the major camera brands' own offerings at a substantially lower price point.

Photography Life

Like the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 HSM DG OS Contemporary lens that came before it, the Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD proves a compelling option for photographers keen on nature and wildlife photography looking for a budget 400mm lens.

Photodo

Lenses for full frame cameras in the range of around 100-400mm hit an extremely useful point in the focal length range. Birding, general wildlife, sports and portraiture all cry out for these lenses so an alternative to the generally expensive marque optics is always welcome.

Many have commented on this lens as good but short of excellent at 400mm wide open. I found this lens to be excellent, with great EQ even at 400mm wide open. Once I fine tuned the focus with the Tap-in console, it produced images on a par with my Nikkor 200-500mm, at a fraction of the weight and...

This lens is absolutely amazing. Sharp, sharp, sharp! I bought it as an alternative to my Nikon 200-500 when I want to travel light. Fits the bill perfectly, and the IQ is as good as the Nikon. Out of the box, the focus on my D850 was slightly off, but I fine tuned it to +4, and it's just right.

B&H Photo

Well designed tele-photo lens, was undecided between this lens and the equivalent Sigma 100-400 mm lens. Both were very sharp, approx. the same weight but the deciding factor for me was the ability of the Tamron lens to accept the optional tripod mount.

B&H Photo

I was just shocked, in a good way, how sharp this lens is! It is sharper than any of mt Nikon FX and DX variable aperture zoom lenses. Compared to these zooms there is very little focus breathing and the VR is excellent. The lens is quite compact for this zoom range and has good ergonomics.

I am an aspiring bird photographer. A long time film and then point and shoot photographer, I resolved to get serious about birds a year ago and purchased a Nikon 7200 and two kit lenses. I struggled with one of them a 55-300 trying to shoot birds.

Imaging Resource

Good level of performance except at the longest focal. I like this lens for freehand shooting, thanks to lightweight and stabilisation. My sample bird photo here and here Read my full review here

So I bought this lens and enjoyed using it on my D810. There were issues with corner sharpness, especially between 300-400mm. I\'d have to push to f/11 to bring the corners up. Unfortunately shooting at f/11 means you either shoot with a slower shutter speed or higher ISO.

B&H Photo

I had the Sigma 150-600 before i got this one. Although i miss the extra reach with the Tamron, it is so much easier to use. I actually keep it on my 6D for most of the time since the 100mm gives me true @100mm FF, which is close enough on the short end.
