Versatile super-telephoto performance

The EF 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is ideal for photographers who are travelling light and want to take just one telephoto lens with them. A great choice for sports and wildlife photography – the 100-400mm zoom range puts you right next to distant subjects, and lets you react quickly in a fast-changing situation. When used on cameras featuring APS-C sized sensors, the EF 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6L IS II USM offers angles of view equivalent to a 160-640mm on a full-frame camera.

Stay sharp, whatever the light

The EF 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6L IS II USM delivers sharp, high-contrast images, using Fluorite and Super Ultra-low Dispersion (Super UD) lens elements to tackle artefacts and distortion. A three-mode Image Stabilizer guards against blur from camera shake, allowing handheld shooting with shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than normal.

Fear no flare

Shoot into the light confident that Canon’s multi-layered Air Sphere Coating (ASC) will protect against flare, ghosting and reduced contrast. ASC uses a multi-layer coating to reduce reflections including a layer of nanosized air spheres deposited on the lens surface to slow down light more gradually as it enters the lens, this prevents the internal reflections that reduce image quality.

Ergonomic handling

Different photographers work in different ways. Use the Zoom Touch Adjustment ring to set the amount of resistance felt when zooming the lens: a light touch is ideal when you’ll be working quickly in a fast-changing situation. On the other hand, you might want to stiffen or lock the zoom mechanism when you don’t want the focal length to change accidentally.

Fast focus when you want it

Enjoy fast USM autofocus that locks on accurately and in near-silence. Full-time manual focus override allows precise adjustment without taking your camera away from your eye. The EF 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6L IS II USM focuses down to 0.98m, letting you react to subjects that come unexpectedly close.

Protected from the great outdoors

Keep shooting even in tough weather conditions. As an L-series lens, the EF 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is sealed against dust and moisture, so you can keep shooting even when conditions turn bad. A fluorine coating on the lens’ front element repels dirt making the lens easy to clean.

The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is a very capable but also pricey telephoto zoom lens that will appeal most to sports and wildlife photographers looking for a relatively lightweight and versatile lens.

LensTip.com

I think those who were waiting patiently for the Canon EF 100–400 mm f/4.5–5.6L IS II USM won’t be disappointed. Its predecessor was optically very good but the new lens is better in every single category.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Field Test - The arrival of the revamped and redesigned 100-400mm is a tempting proposition for Canon users. Michael Topham takes to the fields of Kent to find out how it fares at photographing wildlife

ePHOTOzine

With the popularity of this lens' predecessor, Canon's new 100-400mm lens has a lot to live up to. As far as the performance of the lens is concerned, it has no problems living up to the reputation created by the old lens.

DP Review

The Canon 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 IS USM Mark II has been worth waiting for, now with unrivalled all-round telezoom versatility. It rates best in class for sharpness, AF performance, image stabilization, close focusing and build quality. Canon has done a very thorough job and it's still good value, too.

PC Magazine

The Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens delivers near-perfect optical performance, and is priced accordingly.

Fredmiranda

This is an outstanding lens - definitely one of Canon's greatest. It also seems well priced in comparison to Canon's other super telephoto lens options.I've been using it professionally for over a year now.

Camera Labs

If you want a quality telephoto zoom with longer reach, consider the EF 100-400mm IS USM, now available in a Mark II edition. Compatible with both cropped and full-frame bodies (and delivering equivalent coverage up to 640mm on the former), it's ideal for capturing distant action or wildlife.

The Digital Picture

Many were referring to 2014 as the "Year of the Lens" and the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens joins a host of other 2014-anounced models (including the amazing Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens ).

Photodo

This eagerly awaited telephoto zoom lens replaces the old 100-400mm lens in Canon's lineup of professional lenses. Its predecessor was popular due to its relative compact size, light weight and good value for money.

Canon

I updated from an old rather poor quality 70-300mm F4-5.6 Canon zoom to this. You get what you pay for, it's worth every single penny! Having the right kit that will enable me to get the most out each shoot I go on is essential. I've used it for sports (motor and bike racing) and landscapes.

Wex Photo Video

Bought this lens as I needed a compact telephoto for wildlife photography on a trip to Alaska. The pictures rendered of Eagles, Whales and Dolphins are the best I've ever taken. So pleased I parted with a substantial amount of cash as it was worth every penny.

I took this lens on safari in Tanzania last year and it produced superb results evenly when fully extended.

Castle Cameras

Haven’t had much chance to play with this new lens yet as the weather has not been conducive to getting outside much! I bought it to upgrade from the Sigma 150-600 and to use mostly for bird/wildlife photography.

Wilkinson Cameras

This is a great all round lens. Third time I have owned one, had the mk1 then the mk2 but sold it to upgrade to a prime lens. Now own my third and it is as good as the 300mm f2.8 love it

LensTip.com

Better than expected lens that use with DX camera gives you fantastic pictures of birds and wildlife

Argos

The lens takes very sharp photos and I highly recommend it

Canon

I purchased the Mark 2 version of this lens after having been (and still am) the owner and user f the Mark 1, it took me a short while to go to rotary zoom rather than push pull zoom, but the lens is fantastic, the closer focus has allowed me to use this as a macro lens, whilst the autofocus and...

Wex Photo Video

I took this lens out in the countryside for the first time, I must admit the weight was a slight put off at first but I soon got used to it. For the weight of it it has great stabilization, I was able to get some great shots hand held and rarely used my tripod.

A brilliant lens at a fabulous discounted price from Cameraworld together with a cashback offer from Canon themselves. It made the price cheaper than many I had seen being sold second hand! The performance is great, very sharp and not too heavy to hand hold at high shutter speeds.

I purchased this lens as a replacement for my Mark I version, having looked at image quality comparisons on reviewers' websites. I use the lens almost exclusively for bird photography, and immediately noticed the improvement in image quality. However, what the reviewers did not seem to spot was the higher percentage of "good" shots from a series taken of the same subject. With my previous lens, I often experienced great difficulty in isolating a bird from surrounding small branches in a tree and getting the autofocus to select the bird rather than a nearby twig. The Mark II version seems much easier to use in this respect, and I am getting a noticeably higher percentage of sharp images of the intended subject. As time goes on, I shall gradually discover more positive attributes of what is clearly an outstanding lens. The only downside that I have noticed is that, sometimes, the autofocus does seem to "hunt" a bit more than was the case with the older lens. That surprises me. It's especially noticeable when I am shooting birds in flight, when I am using all available autofocus points (Canon 7D camera) and the camera in AI Servo mode. The mark I version seemed a bit more lively.
