Ultra wide-angle 16-35mm zoom lens

This high performance, fixed aperture, ultra wide-angle zoom lens combines excellent optical performance with flexibility, making it ideal for landscapes, architectural shots, photo journalism, travel and general use – delivering clear, sharp, expansive images with very little distortion.

L-series quality

The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.

Constant f/4 aperture

Ideal for use in a wide range of light conditions, the f/4 maximum aperture stays constant over the full focal-length range, so there is no variation in shutter speed or ISO when zooming.

Sharp images with 4-stop Image Stabilizer

The EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM delivers steady shots in all situations, particularly when shooting handheld in low light or at the macro setting. The lens incorporates Canon’s four-stop Image Stabilizer technology and automatically detects normal shooting or panning motion, switching to the IS mode optimal for either situation.

Ultrasonic focusing

A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Full-time manual override lets you fine tune focus without leaving AF mode.

Smooth background blur

A 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel – so your foreground subjects stand out sharply against beautiful, smooth background blur.

Superb image quality

The EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM incorporates three aspherical elements to ensure corner-to-corner sharpness and clarity throughout the focal range. Two UD (Ultra Low Dispersion) elements virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations. Super Spectra Coating ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor. Fluorine coatings prevent dust and water droplets sticking to front and rear lens elements to help ensure optimum image quality.

0.28m minimum focusing distance

With only a 0.28m focusing distance through the entire zoom range, you can get closer to your subjects and still enjoy a wide field of view.

Non-rotating front element

Easily attach 77mm filters thanks to the non-rotating front element.

We have no doubts: the EF 16–35 mm f/4L IS USM is currently the best ultra-wide angle zoom lens in the whole Canon line-up. It is also noticeably better than its rivals from other producers such as the Nikkor AF-S 16–35 mm f/4G ED VR or the Tokina AT-X PRO FX SD 17–35 mm f/4 (IF).

Photography BLOG

The Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM is a very capable but also very pricey ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that will appeal most to landscape, architecture and reportage photographers looking for a lightweight and responsive lens with the added advantage of image stabilisation for low-light hand-held work.

This new ultra-wide angle zoom lens should replace Canon's venerable 17-40mm f/4L optic in their line up of professional lenses. It sports a zoom range of just over 2x and a constant maximum aperture of f/4.

Good extreme wideangle zoom lenses for full-frame cameras are not easy to find. Damien Demolder tests Canon’s latest to see if it is up to the job

I used to have 17-35 f4 but this lens is nothing in comparison with 16-35 IS f4. great build quality, sharp. I primarily use it for some real estate work I do but it is great for weddings too!

What Digital Camera

This is a very good lens. It has a useful IS system that allows handholding for long exposures, and less vignetting and quality fall-off at the edges than expected. If the ability to handhold your camera is more important than achieving a shallow depth of field, this model might be a better option...

Reasonably priced for a Canon L-series lens, the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM is also a top performer...

The Digital Picture

If you are looking for an extremely sharp ultra-wide angle zoom lens, the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens should be at the top of your consideration list. This lens delivers prime-grade image sharpness right into full frame corners and it has the overall performance to match, including AF speed...

Camera Labs

Canon's EF 16-35mm f4L IS USM is an ultra-wide zoom that's compatible with full-frame DSLRs. It's the successor to the EF 17-40mm f4L USM, losing a little on the long-end, but gaining a tad on the important wide-end, while also adding the benefit of image stabilization.

Imaging Resource

The 16-35mm ƒ/4L IS USM occupies an interesting niche in Canon's line up of wide-angle zoom lenses. Some may question the usefulness of having IS on a wide-angle lens, but it does come in handy both for movie-making, and for when you don't want to lug around a tripod.

So I bought a Canon 5D MKIV and the EF 16-35 lens together, I previously had an old 1D MKIII with a few EF lenses but nothing that went wide for landscapes and it's changed my world, the lens is responsive and sharp and soooo good for taking in the panorama I love it already.

Bought for landscapes, to replace 24-105 L, difference in image quality is quite noticeable. Nice to have a lens that goes so wide. Very happy with results, image quality is acceptional. Fast focus, and sharp images. Would thoroughly recommend this lens.

Wilkinson Cameras

I have been gathering my Canon equipment over the past year and needed a good wide angle lens for landscape photography. I researched this lens on line and saw that it was highly recommended and within my price range.

I use this lens for interior and landscape photography and I've been very impressed so far. Despite reviews saying that the performance is a bit weak at 35mm I haven't found this to be the case in use, at least on a 5D Mark IV body.

For the first few days I was dissapointed but later i have realised this is much better for shooting flats than the Zeiss 18 3.5 ZE i had before. It's great for wide angle shoots and ok for portraits at 35mm but I wish Canon would just make lens like Zeiss 15mm 2.8 for the price of the 16-35 4 IS

Castle Cameras

its a really nice useful lens. works well for portrait work.

Clifton Cameras

Very pleased with the performance of the Lens. This is the first time I have used a lens at 16mm and I have has some excellent results. It gives a different perspective on your surrounds and can give some uninteresting and unusual pictures as well as ultawide angle landscape views.

good solid lens, made to last and take any rough handling, also being a L lens image quality is excellent and it takes a lot for me to agree with price on anything but for this lens I was happy with this price.

Super sharp wide angle lens perfect for full frame. IS great when handheld

Sharp all the way into the corners. Image Stabilisation helpful for hand-held in low light. Autofocus quick. Despite not being f/2.8 this seems to be Canon's best ultrawide lens. Ideal for landscape, architectural, internal shots.
