High performance wide angle zoom

With an effective focal length range of approximately 27-88mm (35 mm equivalent), the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is a powerful lens that delivers remarkable image quality. The wide angle zoom allows you to capture more of every scene and adds a new sense of space and perspective to your photography.

Fixed aperture

The large f/2.8 aperture provides excellent results in low light conditions. The aperture remains constant through the full focal length range, allowing you to zoom from approximately 27-88mm (35 mm equivalent) without slowing shutter speed.

Pleasing background blur

A circular aperture provides a pleasing background blur when shooting with a wide aperture; ideal for creating a sense of depth and isolating your subject from the background.

Image Stabilizer

The EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM features Canon’s 3-stop Image Stabilizer (IS). Ideal for handheld work, IS allows the use of shutter speeds up to 3 stops slower then normal with no perceptible increase in image blur. The IS function helps with low light conditions, fast paced scenes and shooting from moving vehicles.

Fast, quiet auto focus

A ring USM (Ultrasonic motor) uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive responsive, near-silent high speed auto focus. Full time manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF.

Super Spectra coatings

Optimised Super Spectra lens coatings and lens element shaping suppress flare and ghosting - more prone to occur with digital cameras due to reflection off the image sensor. Coatings also help achieve true colour balance and increase contrast for vivid high definition images.

Passes distance information to E-TTL II

The lens passes distance information back to the camera's E-TTL II flash system to ensure optimal flash metering in any shooting situation.

Overall this is a very good lens. It is well specified and the combination of a 17mm minimum focal length a maximum aperture of f/2.8 is especially impressive. The zoom is fully compatible with Canon E-TTL II flashguns in respect of transferring distance information to help ensure optimal exposures.

Photography BLOG

The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is the fastest standard zoom dedicated to Canon's APS-C DSLRs, and is designed to be an upgrade for disgruntled kit lens owners who want better image quality.

We can ask the question: who is this meant for? It's definitely not for an amateur photographer who is going to be discouraged by the size and the high price. It's also not for an advanced photographer who is going to be discouraged by the lens's flaws and will buy something less expensive,...

This versatile standard zoom lens can cover everything from landscapes and cityscapes through to group, full-body and head-and-shoulders portraits. Although larger and heavier than Canon’s cheaper EF-S kit zooms, it affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus...

What Digital Camera

Well-built, wide-aperture, APS-C zoom with three-stop image stabilisation

The image quality is par excellence! I am using this on my Canon T2i and it produces stupendous results. This lens is perfect for indoor low-light, portraits and even outdoor photography. I do notice that the IS makes a low humming sound while it is 'working'.

Camera Labs

Canon's EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 is the general-purpose zoom for anyone who loves to shoot portraits or work in low light; note as an EF-S model, it's not compatible with full-frame cameras.

The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 USM IS is not a perfect lens but it lives quite well up to the very high expectations of the user base. The resolution figures are among the very best seen so far for an APS-C standard zoom lens.

The Digital Picture

Since EF-S lenses only mount on Canon EF-S bodies - which all feature a 1.6x FOVCF - the 17-55mm focal length range always equates to the field of view of a 27.2-88mm lens mounted on a full-frame Digital SLR .

SLR Lens and Camera Reviews

Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM is a superb lens, with fantastic image quality and overall characteristics. Build quality can be improved and the lens does not come with a lens hood or a soft case, which comes as a disappointment considering its high retail price.

its great lens for a student film maker or someone wanting to get into professional photography, with a zoom range from 24 to 70mm full frame equivalent you can shoot wide ,medium or closeup without having to change lenses, the 2.8 aperture gives decent bokeh with acceptable low light performance.

I bought this to replace the kit lens as I tend to use the 17-55 range most often. It's early days and I haven't used it as much as I would have wanted to but I'm impressed by what I've seen so far. The output seems sharp and the F2.8 allows better photography in lower lit scenes.

Love mine. use this on my crop as a walk around lens. Never comes off(well seldom). Sometimes a little short on reach, but thats why I have the 70-200.

I bought this to use with an adaptor with my new Canon R6. It does become a little bulky, it's not a light lens, but the 2.8 aperture and wide angle make it my go to every day lens. It's clear and quick. Recommended. (I'm an amateur photographer)

Purchased this lens after family asked if I would photograph a few shots at a school prom. The reviews highlighted its sharpness and I certainly wasn't disappointed. The shots far exceeded my expectations. This lens is now well & truly my favourite.

This lens would be just perfect had it been built tightly with high quality components and a couple of rubber seals here and there. Now it's just a pricey very good lens.

Used with 70D I haven't had it long so not fully tested it yet it is a bit on the heavy side but thats due to the quality build. So far great images in Bright sun or shade I've not tried long exposures yet focusing is first rate. Well recommended

old f3.5-5.6 wasn't fast enough to catch a 2 year old... this seems to have done the trick in low light! haven't really tried it out apart from that due to work and foul weather! so far so good! replacing kit lens.

I had this on a 30D as the only lens for over a year and was making due all right (except for theatre shoots where I naturally felt awkwardly). It's a great all around lens, if only it had been built better and had better QC...

I've used this on a 50D and 7D mkII; it produces first class results on both.I'm sure if it were an EF lens and not an EF-S lens, it would have a red ring and be an L lens - the quality is that good

A little bit underwhelmed by this lens. It was bought to replace the kit lens on a 7D and it's not that huge an improvement to be honest. It's quite a fast lens but definitely on the soft side wider than f8. I also find that images are rather flat and lacking in contrast for my taste and I have to do more in post-processing than I did with the kit lens. The autofocus is quick and quiet but I find it is often necessary to "tweak" it - the full time manual focussing is a big help here. The image stabilisation seems to work well, there is little noticeable vignetting and chromatic aberration appears to be pretty well controlled.
