Product Details

A short telephoto focal length, combined with a large maximum aperture and fast autofocus speed, make the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM an ideal optic for any photographer shooting portraiture

  • EF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/1.8 to f/22
  • Super Spectra Coating
  • Ring-Type Ultrasonic Motor AF System
  • Rounded 8-Blade Diaphragm

A practical and portability telephoto lens

The EF 85mm f/1.8 USM produces images that are sharp and clear at all apertures. A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out-of-focus regions a softer, more even feel, and lets in-focus subjects stand out against a blurred background. The lens features a non-rotating front element during focusing, enabling specialist filters (such as polarisers and graduates) to be used.

Large f/1.8 aperture

A large maximum aperture of f/1.8 lets photographers shoot hand-held in difficult, low-light conditions, as well as restrict depth-of-field for creative effects.

Compressed perspective in portraiture

The short telephoto focal length of the lens slightly compresses perspective, reducing the size of prominent facial features for a flattering result.

Ultrasonic focusing

A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.

Super Spectra coating

Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.

Integration with E-TTL II flash metering

The lens passes distance information back to a compatible EOS camera's E-TTL II flash system to ensure optimal flash metering.

The Canon EF 85 mm f/1.8 USM is a lens almost 20-year-old. Looking at its achievements we must admit its age makes itself felt. The lens doesn’t break any resolution records, its anti-reflection coatings are not of the highest quality, it doesn’t feature any low-dispersion glass elements and maybe...

With the price being only £315, this lens is a cracking bargain for those looking for a very capable lens for portraiture that delivers excellent sharpness with low levels of chromatic aberrations and distortion.

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is a very desirable lens and, surprisingly, a very affordable one. Both contrast and resolution are very good straight from f/1.8 and excellent at medium aperture settings. On APS-C DSLRs there's only a moderate degree of vignetting at f/1.8 and beyond it's a non-issue.

Camera Labs

Canon’s EF 85mm f1.8 USM is an affordable classic portrait lens for both full-frame and cropped bodies. The 85mm focal length allows you to stand a little further away than 50mm models, while accentuating the blurred background effect.

What Digital Camera

Far cheaper than Canon's f/1.2 equivalent, but still a mighty good performer for a more than reasonable price

Technology X

Over the course of my ownership the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM has been quite impressive. Despite its color fringing in high contrast scenes, the lens performs wonderfully for almost any composition. It’s fast and accurate autofucus has helped me to capture shots I thought I had missed.

The Digital Picture

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens is relatively inexpensive but yields very good image quality. It is reasonably sharp wide open, but really shines from f/2.8 on.

SLR Lens and Camera Reviews

Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is one of the best medium telephoto prime lenses in Canon's arsenal. Combination of stellar performance with both APS-C and FF type cameras and affordable price, make this lens an interesting choice for general as well as portrait photography.

This medium telephoto lens from Canon sports a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture and ultrasonic silent focusing that is performed internally for around £315.

An excellent portrait lens. I couldn’t warrant the expenditure of the 1.2 or even the 1.4 but no disappointment’s here I have since produced some great portraits.

Probably thought of as a portrait lens by most, it is superb for general use too. It lives up to it's reputation as being sharp throughout it's aperture range, it does not disappoint there. It makes a superb macro lens when used with extension tubes, the focus ring is easy and smooth in use.

cheap and excellent lens for portret

I was going to purchase more expensive pro version but at half the price this is more than adequate for my use. Excellent images so far

A very good lens with exceptional colors. Clear clarity. This lens recommends for potrait and for a beautiful landscape.

I've recently upgraded from the 600d to the 5d mark iii and with that the 24-70 2.8 ii lens. That is incredible. But this little 85mm 1.2 has blew me away with the first try. Both lens's are quality and I'm working heavily with the 24-70. But the smoothness the 85 offers.. I have never known.

Fantastic lens for portraiture, some landscape and flora and fauna. Good low light performance and lovely smooth bokeh. I would thoroughly recommend this lens to anyone.

My favourite lens on my old crop sensor camera was a 50mm prime. When i upgraded to full frame the 50mm was good, but was no longer my go to lens. The 85mm is perfect, gives me a nice focal length that is very familiar and easy to use. Very fast focusing as well.

It's every bit as good as a lens can get, and with a very low price. There's no reason not to buy this one, if you're interested in the 85mm focal length.

Optically suburb lens but build quality issue: there is play in the focus ring, Canon say they are all like that!

Hi the 85mm lens is brill fast posting great service
