An everyday lens that's anything but ordinary
Meet the world's lightest 5x zoom lens with an f/2.8-4 aperture, which is excellent for softening foregrounds or backgrounds and highlighting your subject. On a DX-format camera, it's zoom range is equivalent to Nikon's 24-120mm FX lens (35mm format), a staple in many pro camera bags.
A new level of DX-format performance
Unleash the power of your high-resolution Nikon DSLR. Nano Crystal Coat virtually eliminates glare, while Extra-low Dispersion Glass and Aspherical elements reduce colour aberration and enhance sharpness and contrast. Capture vibrant colours, rich tonality and a level of detail that's staggering.
4 stops of Vibration Reduction
In low light situations, the 16-80mm's VR image stabilization lets you shoot handheld up to 4 shutter speeds slower to gather more of the available light without causing blur. There's even a specialized Tripod VR mode, a first for this zoom range, that eliminates the effects of tripod vibration.
High-speed electromagnetic diaphragm
Nikon's DX and FX DSLRs can freeze action with fast continuous shooting speeds; this lens can keep up. A specialized electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism operates in precise sync with the camera's shutter for reliable exposure control during high-speed sequences.
Nikon's innovative protective fluorine coat
Making it easier to wipe off water, dirt and smudges, the front and rear lens elements have Nikon's exclusive fluorine coat. This extraordinary protective coating technology has to be seen to be believed.
Whilst this is a brilliant and perfect addition to the Nikon DX Lens range, we should point out that due to the electronic aperture actuators, this lens is not compatible with a number of cameras; including:
- Anything film
- D1 Series
- D2 Series
- D200
- D100

This test shows clearly the changes Nikon have undergone during the last ten years or so. At the beginning of the digital era they backed the DX format and treated it seriously enough.
Nikon’s latest standard zoom could be the lens DX-format users have been waiting for. Phil Hall puts it to the test to see if the wait has been worth it
With this lens, Nikon have thrown all their latest technology at a mid-range optic, resulting in a lens that performs well enough, but maybe isn’t spectacular enough to justify the high-end price when compared to similar optics.
Essentially this lens will appeal to Nikon DX camera owners who want a standard zoom lens that covers a wider zoom range than the regular 18-55mm kit zooms supplied with Nikon DX cameras. In both specifications and price, this lens is a cut above the standard kit lens.
I went into this expecting to bash on a poor defenseless kit lens but came away with quite the crush on this offering. The 16-80mm is a great all-around lens for static subjects. It encompasses a 5x zoom range with an equivalent of 24-120mm which covers most subjects except super-wide landscapes and...
The AF-S DX Nikkor 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR is a well-specified lens with a versatile 5x zoom, 4-stop VR, electromagnetic diaphragm, relatively fast maximum aperture and compact form factor.
The Nikon AF-S DX 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR is a high-tech, high-performance standard zoom for APS-C format DSLRs...
High-quality lens. Feels good in hands, well balanced, not light and not heavy, just right. Using it in pair with my Nikon D7100. I love thecontrast and sharpness of theimages. Highly recommend it to anyone who looking for wide angle as well for the middle zoom lens - this one will be a perfect...
This is an excellent lens that now stays on my Nikon D500 much of the time. When I first bought the D500, I elected to get the body only. In my mind, the 16 - 80mm had two things going against it: First, it was a DX lens, meaning that it would not be good for my full-frame D810 body.
Purchased this lens for my recent Danube River Cruise and it more then met my expectations. Mounted on my Nikon D7200 body it made a relatively compact and light travel combination. The 16-80mm on the cropped sensor camera is equivalent to 24-120mm on full frame, a very useful range.
I did a lot of homework before purchasing this lens, even renting it first. Bought the lens shortly after the rental agreement was up as I was so impressed with this lens. Read lots of reviews etc.
I've used my Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55 lens for years. I love it and I'm not trading it in. But I needed a little more reach and really needed VR for some inside venue shots. This little gem is the ticket.
It\'s a new staple of saving engineering and manufacturing cost with pre- and post-processing. Since this lens needs to be stopped down to produce excellent pictures but I shoot on a D7000 so it focus shifts, I had trouble getting any usable results at all.
This was unexpected, but I really like this lens. Yes, its plastic and you might question the build quality but its sharp, light and a great traveler. I shoot with a handful of primes and wanted a grab one lens and go and this bit the bill perfectly. Its sharp and plenty fast.
I recently purchased the D500 and this was the kit lens. I wasn't planning on purchasing the kit because often kit lens are not so good. After reading reviews I decided to go for it. It is the perfect range for walk around and delivers sharp images.
