Emphasising image quality. This is a SIGMA's new all-in-one lens.

Who decides it is impossible to combine portability with image quality? It is understood that the relationship between optical performance and the lens shape is more like a trade-off, and we may need to prioritise one over the other. A high ratio zoom lens often requires compactness and enhancement of additional features to be capable enough to cover various shooting scenes with convenience and versatility. However, SIGMA still believes that image quality is what matters the most.

When travelling with minimal equipment the lens needs a wide zoom range especially as a telephoto lens may be needed unexpectedly without time to switch lenses. Even with a high ratio zoom lens, our goal is to satisfy enthusiastic photographers with the versatility of the lens and its optical performance. Therefore, we sought for the point where all the pieces, such as specification, performance and size fall into place and this lens is the fruit of this journey. This is good either as your first interchangeable lens or as a high performance all in one lens.

Excellent optical performance that satisfies experienced users

This lens incorporates 4 FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have performance equal to fluorite plus 1 SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element. This minimises chromatic aberration, especially toward the telephoto-end, and provide clear image quality with high colour fidelity.

Accumulated lens technology leads to superior image quality

The most appropriate optical glass elements are selected to optimize all focal lengths of the lens. From wide-angle to telephoto and macro ranges, it offers superior image quality throughout the entire zoom range. It compensates for the distortion very well, especially at the wide-end, and carries extraordinary expressive capability from the centre to the corners.

Renewed OS system for higher compensation

By reviewing the system construction and the algorithm of firmware, 3.5 stops of compensation has been achieved.

Zoom-macro for enhanced macro photography

Just by rotating the zoom ring, it enables photographers to take close-up pictures of subjects such as jewellery and flowers. The maximum magnification ratio at respective focal lengths is indicated on the lens barrel, thus it is easy to see what the object size will be at the sensor. Furthermore, in order to secure a clear field-of-view, the design of this lens is very thorough, even down to the precise position of the engraved letters on the lens.

Newly Developed Hyper Sonic Motor

For comfortable and smooth use with the high zoom ratio, 16.6 times, it incorporates a bigger HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) which is newly developed for this lens. It is powerful enough to ensure high speed and quiet AF.

Designed to minimize flare and ghosting

Flare and ghosting were thoroughly measured and monitored from the lens development stage to establish an optical design which is resistant to strong incidental light such as backlight. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions.

SIGMA USB DOCK - Customizable to your needs

With the optional SIGMA USB DOCK and the dedicated special software “SIGMA Optimization Pro”, you can update your lens firmware, or adjust focus points by attaching this lens to a SIGMA USB DOCK connected to a computer.

If you launch a lens with parameters slightly worse than those of its direct rival and you still want to succeed there are two strategies available: make sure that your lens has either better properties or a lower price.

ePHOTOzine

This lens is certainly capable of delivering images with decent sharpness. It is reasonably compact, well built and the price is very reasonable too. Those looking for a lens covering a wide range of focal lengths, whilst allowing them to travel light should certainly give this lens serious...

The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR is one of the better superzoom SLR lenses we've tested, but its price is on the high side.

Sigma are continuing to gradually update their lenses to fit into their 'Art', 'Sport' and 'Contemporary' lens lines. This new lens sports a 16.7x zoom range, silent focusing and optical stabilisation.

Generally a very good lens and certainly great for travelling around with - and even better for walking around with. Quality of build seems excellent and the end product is equally good. The only downsize is that the autofocus seems a tad slow but then again you can't have everything.

Harrison Cameras

This lense is a very useful lense to keep on the camera. It covers such a range, from 18 to 300 mm (29 to 480 on Canon APS-C). Suffers at each end of the range, but one can live with that for the coverage.

This is the best all in one travel lens I have owned. Compact and light but superb quality both in build and feel. Nice sharp images and with a focal length from 18mm to 300mm your in a great position to capture landscapes, portraits and wildlife even macro without having to change your lens in the...

I have taken some close-up wildlife photos which have come out really well plus some shots at a recent air show. The only time the lens struggled was when there was a lot of water or a lot of sky in the shot, but I suspect that if I changed to spot focus on the camera I may get better results.

Absolutely amazing lense, enables me to take all photos i want without changing lenses, not too heavy, its ideal, does what it says, & half the price of the nikon, good quality pictures so far, really happy with this lense, I recommend this product, impressed with price, & thats main reason i...

For an all in one superzoom, this lens performs really well. OK it won't stack up against the likes of Canon L glass or Sigma Art lenses but the IQ is very good and it certainly punches above its weight.
