Product Details

The new standard

The RF 50mm F1.8 STM is a compact RF prime lens with a fast f/1.8 aperture capable of high-quality images. The lens is small, light and quiet thanks to a redesign of optics for its RF mount and STM motor and ideal for exploring your creativity.

Wide aperture creativity

Create artistic and impactful images at lower ISO thanks to a wide f/1.8 aperture that achieves sharp focus on a subject yet delivers a beautifully blurred background.

Sharp, quiet focusing

The STM (Stepping Motor) technology focuses very smoothly and in near-silence, ideal for stills and video. Super Spectra Coating on the lens elements ensures quality.

Compact and lightweight

At 160g and 40.5mm, it is a highly compact and lightweight partner for your day-to-day shooting with EOS R-series cameras, with no adapter required.

Considered design

Very discreet with a combined focusing and control ring for intuitive control, the lens has a 7-blade circular aperture for superb bokeh and focuses to 0.3m.

Creativity at a lower cost

The RF 50mm F1.8 STM offers an affordable way to explore greater creativity and is a great choice for ambient light portraits with a natural, flattering perspective.

Michael Topham tests an inexpensive standard prime in RF-mount for Canon EOS R cameras

ePHOTOzine

The standard 50mm lens, long neglected, has more recently seen a resurgence in popularity. It is easy to see why - relatively low cost, fast, bright maximum apertures, fast focusing, the lens that can be taken anywhere no matter how low the lighting and the one that delivers the goods.

PhotoReview

Compact, lightweight and close-focusing, the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a remarkable little lens that is priced within the range of everyday photographers.

PC Magazine

Canon's affordable RF 50mm F1.8 STM mirrorless prime is a fine choice for photographers just starting out, but hobbyists may want a bit more from an everyday lens.

Camera Labs

The Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM is a low-cost standard lens for the EOS R mirrorless system which, like the EF versions before it, provides an affordable entry into the World of prime lenses, low-light photography and shallow depth-of-field effects.

The Digital Picture

While the Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM Lens is not the highest performing lens from an image quality perspective, the image quality is decent (quite good stopped down), and this lens holds some strong advantages.

LB Tech Reviews

Canon photographers with EOS R cameras need a bright 50mm. This one.

OpticalLimits

The Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM left us with some mixed emotions. Some aspects are really good if not outstanding but there's an elephant or two in the room. Let's start with the positives. In terms of resolution, it is generally very decent.

Digital Camera World

A next-gen nifty fifty, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is both a bargain and an essential for EOS R owners...

really happy with the picture quality this lens produces. I have used it for landscapes, still life and portraits, and it never fails to deliver. What I really like about this lens is the size of it. its small and light it is a real pocket rocket lens that packs a punch

Wex Photo Video

Replaced the EF 50mm f1.8 version with this. Do not regret it one bit, excellent value for money and simply a better lens. Nice, neat, compact and discreet, phenomenal for street photography.

WEX

I have not owned a 50mm prime lens for years and felt it was time to do so. The image quality is amazing from my EOS R. Its good to use a fixed focal length as it makes you spend a little more time on composition. The auto focus is fast and silent. I'm so glad I bought this lens.

I loved Canons EF 50mm lens and I love RF 50mm more. Quiet and quick, excellent lens and good price. Great starter lens. Would recommend every Canon user to have one!

I have had the lens for about 2 weeks as a replacement for an older EF 50mm II. This is my first RF lens despite owning an EOS R for nearly 2 years. The most noticeable difference physically is not having to use the EF-RF adaptor makes the whole set-up nice and compact.

JB Hi-Fi

Great portrait lens, wide aperture, lots of lights. Must have for any photographer. Highly recommended.

Henrys

Had it for more that a few months now. Sharp and fast. Small, and noise is okay. Dollar for dollar probable the best rf lens out there.

Sharpness could be better. But it is cheap. It still left me wanting more
