Enhanced clarity
A low-pass cancelation filter enhances the clarity and sharpness of the high-resolution images with minimal risk of artifacts, making the EOS 5DS R a good option for shooting outdoors or in controlled studio conditions.
Reduced mirror vibration for maximum sharpness
The EOS 5DS R uses Canon’s Mirror Vibration Control System to reduce vibrations caused by internal movements within the camera, which can spoil image sharpness and reduce resolution. Cams are used to drive the mirror up and down in a more controlled fashion, avoiding any sudden stops and also softening the shutter-release sound.
Low-pass cancelation filter
Conventional DSLR designs use a low-pass filter in front of the camera’s sensor to prevent digital artefacts, like moiré and false colour. Such filters soften the image slightly, so the low-pass effect is cancelled in the EOS 5DS R for the sharpest possible performance. The small risk of artefacts as a consequence of this makes EOS 5DS R a good option when shooting outdoors or in controlled studio conditions, but for other applications the EOS 5DS may be a better choice.
React and respond, staying ahead of the action
Enjoy fast image processing and camera responsiveness – even with the large amounts of data captured by the 50.6-MP sensor - thanks to the Dual DIGIC 6 processors. You can catch all the action with an unrivalled ability to capture 50.6-MP resolution images at 5fps while USB 3.0 connectivity allows fast tethered shooting and remote camera control.
Advanced subject tracking and recognition
EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition (iTR) AF technology uses colour and face information to recognise and track subjects as they move around the frame. AF responsiveness can be customised using a simple tool, which adjusts the focus tracking according to the shooting environment and subject, so that other objects passing momentarily in front of the subject don’t interfere with focusing.
61-point wide-area autofocus
Focus quickly and precisely, even in low-light conditions using a 61-point AF System. 41 cross-type focus points, including five extra-sensitive double cross-type, provide extra accuracy.
AF Point Selection
Use all 61 AF points together, or group them into moveable zones that cover off-centre subjects. Alternatively, select just a single AF point to focus precisely on a specific part of the scene.
Customisable screen
Flexibly change the type, size and position of icons on the camera’s Custom Quick Control screen, so you can easily find your favourite settings.
Intelligent Viewfinder II
Enjoy a bright (approximately) 100 per cent image with a customisable information overlay. 1.6x and 1.3x crops can be masked in the viewfinder and captured as JPEG files.
Customisable controls
Customise camera settings for the task in hand and save your favourite functions for the future.
Weather sealing
Carry on shooting with confidence, whatever the conditions, thanks to weather-sealed controls that protect against water and dust, and a durable magnesium alloy construction.
Dual memory card slots
CompactFlash and SD memory card slots enable automatic back up of files as you shoot, allowing easy sharing with clients and extending storage capacity.
In-camera functions empower your creativity
- High dynamic range imaging: Preserve the detail in highlight and shadow areas using HDR imaging. Ideal for shooting landscape and still-life shots it combines three images of different exposures: standard, underexposure and overexposure
- Multi exposure: Create stunning composite images in-camera using Multiple Exposure mode, which overlays images on top of each other with a choice of automatic multiple exposure control options.
- Full HD EOS movies: Capture Full HD EOS Movies, with creative manual control over picture and sound.
- Timer shooting functions: Create great time-lapse movies with a built-in, pre-programmable interval timer. For extreme long-exposure photography, the shutter can be locked up in bulb mode for a specified time.
Fine Detail Picture Style
Prioritise gradations and detail captured by the high resolution sensor using Fine Detail Picture Style, which also provides adjustable in-camera sharpening parameters like threshold and fineness for JPEG files - so you can deliver high impact images directly from the camera.
The Canon EOS 5Ds R was not designed as a replacement to the EOS 5D Mark III or Mark IV. Its launch created a new strand for Canon EOS DSLR's designed specifically for photographers who demand the absolute best image quality.

TIPA AWARD 2016
Best DSLR Professional / High Res Canon EOS 5DS R
Rivalling the resolution of “medium format” digital cameras, the impressive 50.6MP full frame CMOS sensor of the Canon EOS 5DS R (with low pass cancellation filter) can deliver 5fps full resolution still images, and Full HD 1080p videos at 30 fps. It features a Dual “DIGIC 6” image processors and a newly developed Mirror Vibration Control System that utilises a miniature motor and cams rather than conventional springs, with a time-release lag setting to further suppress camera shake. The camera has a 3.2-inch 1.04 million dot, approx. 100% coverage ClearView II LCD and a 150,000 pixel RGB-IR metering sensor. AF performance is enhanced with a 61-point high-density reticular AF sensor and Canon’s iTR that utilizes information provided by the metering sensor.
Amateur Photographer Magazine Testbench Gold 2015
There’s little doubt that the Canon EOS 5DS R is one of the most impressive cameras we’ve ever seen. With its 50.6MP sensor, robust build, and reliable metering and autofocus, it’s sure to become a favourite with working photographers for whom ultimate resolution really matters. Indeed, with 20% higher linear resolution than 36MP cameras, it lays down the gauntlet to Sony and Nikon to play catch-up again, although it would be naive to expect this to take long.
When shooting with the 5DS R, it is also striking just how mature the design has become. While no camera is perfect, and different photographers have different preferences, few models work quite so well out of the box. In part this is due to the fact that the large body gives plenty of space for controls, but the layout is also exceptionally well considered, placing everything you need at your fingertips. Unusually, the camera works almost as well in live view as when using the viewfinder, although an articulated LCD would have made it even better.
Image quality is superb, and the ‘fine detail’ picture style is capable of packing practically all the captured detail into the camera’s JPEGs. I’d still expect most users to shoot raw, but it’s great that JPEGs are much more usable than on recent Canon DSLRs. The only caveat is that low ISO dynamic range still doesn’t quite match its peers, so you can’t dig as much detail out of deep shadows as you can from cameras such as the Nikon D810.
EISA Awards
European Professional DSLR Camera 2015-2016
The Canon EOS 5DS R is the highest resolution full frame DSLRs on the market. The EOS 5DS R cancels the optical low pass filter effect for the sharpest possible images. The 50.6-million-pixel sensor, dual DIGIC 6 processors, reduced mirror vibration and reliable metering deliver superb image quality, while the 61-point AF with 41 cross-type points ensures reliable and fast AF performance. These two cameras are the perfect choice for professional photographers for whom ultimate image quality really matters.
Camera Grand Prix Japan 2016 Editors Award
The camera achieves an outstanding multi-pixel capacity of 50.6 megapixels as a full-frame 35mm SLR camera. It also employs a camera blur reduction mirror drive mechanism to support the multi-pixel photography and a high precision autofocus system, EOS iTR AF. It is developed as a multi-pixel camera that is easily used by the consumer and it expands the horizon of the photographic expressions.
