The α6600 packs in the features, to deliver what you need for just about any situation you encounter – fast AF, steady image stabilisation and stunning image quality, a high-capacity battery and serious 4K HDR (HLG) movie shooting.

Unparalleled AF performance, the key to beautiful shots

Fast and accurate autofocus captures fleeting moments in stunning detail, thanks to a combination of innovative Sony technologies. A total of 425 phase-detection AF points work in conjunction with contrast-detection AF to achieve a remarkable 0.02-sec. speed, while High-density AF Tracking Technology follows even erratically moving subjects

Real-time Tracking holds the focus on tracked subjects

When you're tracking a fast-moving subject, the camera's motion tracker uses an enhanced subject recognition algorithm (AI) that draws on colour, pattern (brightness), distance (depth) and face/eye information to recognise, and maintain focus on, your subject.

Enhanced Real-time Eye AF supports portrait shooting

Real-time Eye AF detects and automatically focuses on the eyes of your subject when you half-press the shutter, and you can even prioritise your subject's left or right eye. When AF-C is set, it maintains a stable focus even when the face is partially hidden or backlit, or the subject is facing downwards.

High speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking

Capture all the action with continuous shooting at up to 11fps. Even when using silent shutter, or the live-view mode, up to 8fps is possible. Display lag has been minimised, and up to 116 JPEG (Standard) images can be shot in each burst, with group display available in the playback mode.

Focus Magnifier for finer focus adjustment in both MF/AF modes

When extra-accurate focus is called for, such as when you're taking macro shots, you can display a magnified view of the general area you want to focus on, then finely adjust the exact point of focus using the touchscreen or the focus point selector.

Easy manual focus with a clearly visible peaking function

The camera's peaking function colour-highlights the most sharply focused section of the entire image area when you're using manual focus. Now blue has been added to the display's other peaking colours (red, yellow and white) to improve the visibility of in-focus areas when you're doing the delicate focusing required for macro or portrait shooting.

Built-in 5-axis optical image stabilisation

The 5-axis in-body optical image stabilisation mechanism used on our acclaimed full-frame cameras has been adapted for use as a stabilisation unit for the APS-C sensor on this model. This system compensates for camera shake along five different axes – pitch and yaw, horizontal and vertical, and rotational (roll) – to ensure steadier still images and movies during hand-held shooting. A highly accurate gyro sensor provides an image stabilisation effect equivalent to a shutter speed 5 steps faster. The feature allows you to zoom in on far-off subjects, snap detailed close-ups, capture night scenes and more ― all with minimal blur from camera shake.

14-bit RAW output with rich tonal gradation

True 14-bit RAW images are delivered via a high-performance LSI and the BIONZ X image processor. To retain the smoothest, most natural tonal gradations, all processing occurs at 16-bit, preventing any dithering or processing errors from being introduced into the final 14-bit RAW image output.

4K movie recording in high-bit-rate XAVC S format

Super 35mm format, 4K movie recording with full pixel readout and no pixel binning allows oversampling of around 2.4x the image information needed for 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160). By downscaling from the equivalent of 6K resolution, captured videos benefit from even more realism and depth. The high-bit-rate (up to 100Mbps for 4K 30p/24p) XAVC S video codec ensures professional quality images in a consumer-friendly format.

Precise AF tracking with Real-time Eye AF, for better movies

Fast Hybrid AF brings high speed, accuracy and tracking performance to meet the stringent autofocus demands of 4K movies. AF tracking sensitivity can be adjusted for either stable focus or responsive refocusing, depending on the nature of the scene, and Touch Tracking lets you initiate tracking of a moving subject simply by touching the LCD screen. Real-time Eye AF is now also available for movies.

Creative movie-making options

Interval Shooting with a set interval between 1 and 60 seconds can be performed within the camera and used to create a time-lapse movie on a PC. You can also view the images using a simple variable-speed preview function directly on the camera. Slow motion (up to 5x) and quick motion (up to 60x) can also be recorded directly on the camera with no post-processing required. Also, high-quality slow-motion movies can be created in post-production using high-speed Full HD recording at up to 120fps.

Sturdy, durable construction for robust operation

The camera's low-vibration shutter mechanism is designed and tested to withstand around 200,000 shutter cycles, and the body, top cover, front cover, internal frame, and rear cover use a lightweight but highly rigid magnesium alloy. Major buttons and dials are sealed, and casing components have an interlocked double-layer structure to minimise dust and moisture.

1:1 aspect ratio ideal for social-media shots

In addition to 3:2 and 16:9 aspect (width-to-height) ratios, you can also select a 1:1 aspect ratio – ideal for sharing images on social media platforms. This means that you no longer need to hand-trim your images after shooting to prepare to post them on social media.

180°-tiltable LCD screen with versatile touch functions

The high-resolution, 921k-dot LCD has a 3.0-type screen and tilts up a full 180° and down by 74°, for easy framing of selfie shots and vlogs. The LCD's intuitive touch operations include Touch Pad (to smoothly move the focus point), Touch Focus (to set the focus point), Touch Shutter (to release the shutter), and Touch Tracking (to activate Real-Time AF).

One-touch remote, One-touch sharing, Location Information Link

The One-touch remote feature turns your mobile device into a viewfinder and remote control. One-touch sharing allows photos and videos to be transferred to your device for social media sharing. The camera can also use your mobile phone's location data via Bluetooth® to geo-tag your images.

There’s a lot of great features in this all-round model from Sony. It’s packed with fantastic technology which enables you to capture subjects in a variety of different scenarios. However, the body design lacks imagination and can even be frustrating to use at times.

Trusted Reviews

Sony has been using the same type of outward design for its APS-C cameras for some time now, with the A6600 following pretty much the same form factor as its predecessor, the A6400.

TechRadar UK

On paper, the a6600 should be the APS-C camera to beat, with a top-performing sensor and a range of features that will appeal to a broad swath of photographers. However, Sony has resolutely stuck with a form factor that’s not as comfortable as rival cameras, with a convoluted menu system, and...

Sony’s flagship APS-C mirrorless camera boasts the firm’s latest autofocus technology and in-body stabilisation, but in an ageing body design. Andy Westlake takes a critical look Sony Alpha 6600, Verdict:

Expertreviews.co.uk

A super fun, super quality camera with super battery life – but not a camera that wins our unqualified approval

Pocket Lint

If what you're after is as much power as you can get in a small package, Sony's A6600 is a very tempting offering.

ePHOTOzine

As Sony's flagship APS-C mirrorless camera, it seems a shame that the camera doesn't offer CINE-4K video (others in this price range do), or 4K at 60fps, and it's also a shame that the USB connection hasn't been updated to USB Type-C.

DP Review

The Sony a6600 has an industry-leading autofocus system, is capable of excellent images and video, comes with very useful in-body image stabilization and has the best battery life of any mirrorless camera on the market at this time.

Camera Jabber

At times the Sony A6600 is frustrating, a couple of changes to the control arrangement could improve its handling enormously, but it’s capable of delivering excellent-quality images and video. It has an extensive feature set and decisive, accurate focusing in both stills and video shooting.

PC Magazine

Sony brings its class-leading autofocus tech and big Z battery to its a6600 APS-C camera, but we wish there were improvements in other areas too.

Waited a while to get this camera for price wise, was surprised when the box turned up with how small it was and once out of the box how small the camera is in the hands. Holding it tho is really nice, fits in my hands perfectly and having the larger battery it lasts a long time shooting too.

I bought this a few weeks ago so am still learning all the menus etc but already really impressed. Great manual functionality but also a very capable auto function which makes it a highly capable camera both as point and shoot as well as more professional photo/video.

The Sony A6600 is my first camera, a bold move I know as I could have purchased a cheaper camera. The continuous great reviews across platforms, the weight, build quality and AF are some of the many reasons I bought this model. There are a couple of designs I wish were different.

Bought the 6600 to replace an old 6000. As a professional who carried heavy camera bags for decades, I needed something small but high quality for a trip to Italy. The images are so very crisp! The big surprise for me was the low light performance.

I use it for my photography and videography business I have for weddings and events as a static b cam. The video has unlimited recording time with no limit. Im able to get 4 hours non stop on a full battery in full HD with screen disabled. I'd advice to keep the screen out and open to let the heat out. Full HD won't be a problem but 4k will produce much more heat and battery will last around 2 hours 20ish. I find video quality on full HD is slightly softer then the a7iii but not the end of the world. Overall does the job good enough for what I need. Panasonic gh5 gives a much sharper image and better overall vs the Sony A6600 but battery life is much shorter at around 2 hours 30 vs the Sony. Great second camera to compliment a7 series or as a back up. Sam from photo video guru.
